Would get rid of Kolo to GC for a second rounder probs an early one

I'm not sure I see the reasoning for the only key defender we've developed in the past decade (Taylor came as mature age; Henderson and Rivers with trade), at a time when half our back line is likely to be retiring in the next year or two.

THere's a focus on brothers, but there are other kinds of connections. It's surely no coincidence that we have three defenders from northern Tassie - Thurlow, Kolo, and Gardner - who arrived in successive years or close to it (2012, 2013, 2015).

Going on last year's draft that kind of snowballing (players from the same TAC cup team/state team/etc.) is being used by a whole bunch of clubs as a strategy to help players settle in, and perhaps in the longer term, to stay.

Atkins and McLaughlin for what iv seen. Its a good thing we have our stand alone VFL side as we can have our players we can look at closely and say to them come to our VFL side as we may be interested in you

I like Stewart as long as he keeps improving. We've known since he's first VFL games he's a great kick.
Is starting to look stronger and better 1on1 and knowing when to peel off.
Could be a really good player.
Don't mind the mo either. Reminds me a bit of True Detectives.

I can just see Stewart standing next to his opponent whispering the wisdom of Rus Cohle into his ear....
"I'd consider myself a realist, alright? But in philosophical terms I'm what's called a pessimist... I think human consciousness is a tragic misstep in evolution. We became too self-aware. Nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself - we are creatures that should not exist by natural law... We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self, that accretion of sensory experience and feelings, programmed with total assurance that we are each somebody, when in fact everybody's nobody... I think the honorable thing for our species to do is to deny our programming. Stop reproducing, walk hand in hand into extinction - one last midnight, brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal."

Lets face it if he can play 100 games for us we will be doing very well from a P40. Im not sure what the average would be but it would be a lot less than that.

LOL, Can you imagine Tex Walker trying to process that.

Yes we have an abundance of HBF type players, but apart from 2e we have developed them all. I really feel we need to keep this group of players and let them fight it out for the spots that are up for grabs. Most of them have played several games together now and are starting to realise each others strengths and weaknesses. Yes, obviously not all of them will make it, but it wont be long until we start to see the benefits of the hard work that has been put into this group of players, we just need to keep them at the club and be patient. It is important that Geelong holds onto kolo.

IMO - really dont want that to happen - and over time we would lose that trade I feel.

Reckon JK in the long term will be very very good.

As long as he plays at the level of season 1 of he starts playing like season 2 it'd be back to VFL.

Would be risky for sure. I'd say we'd probably lose.
I wonder if we'd consider trading Guthrie and Blitz. 2 players we've got cover for and after 100 games we're not going to get a huge improvement out of each.
Fair chance of winning those trades as there's a good chance the picks could turn out better, we'll get better than what we paid for them, we have cover and it adds youth to the list.

Does this changes things........

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-ne...ax-player-movement-rules-20170524-gwcck3.html

Fairfax Media understands that the AFL has agreed to introduce at least one of the following free agency platforms as early as next season and definitely by 2019:

  • Free agency for life - any player remains a free agent after eight years of service in the game regardless of how many years he has played at his current club;

  • Portable free agency - any player can move to the club of his choice after eight years' service whether or not those years have all been at the one club;

  • Four-year free agency - any player earning on or under the median AFL wage would be free to choose a new club after four years of service.

    Players potentially falling into that four-year category at the end of 2017 include Zak Jones (Sydney), Blake Acres (St Kilda), Jarman Impey (Port Adelaide), Daniel McStay (Brisbane) and Tom Barrass (West Coast).

    Having pushed for but failed to reduce the free agency eligibility period to six years of service at one club, the AFLPA has succeeded in achieving at least one, but potentially all three, of the above reforms aimed at improving the livelihoods of older players and those younger players struggling for opportunities.

If this comes in id say Zac Jones worth just went up substantially......

Good changes. Not sure there's anything revolutionary in there though.

If you being in that many clauses you might as well give free agency to everyone

I have long been an advocate of the FA retention. Once a player like Ablett for instance , has earned his FA , he should be able to keep that. Its a rare player that is in high demand at his age but if he was out of contract he should be able to walk.

The last citeria may see a lot more players in the FA market. .If you are not earning enough to be above the median ie the bottom 50% of the players wage you will be FA after 4 years... thats a lot more players that a club can access FA . It would means guys like Lang , Bews and Kolodjashnij who are OOC at years end... they would probably be FA.

Yes, that's certainly the more significant change in terms of volume. Is it really that different to practice though - i.e. us losing Kersten, Vardy, Walker, etc.? Takes the token late pick out of the equation but that's about all.

That's what the players want and will likely get 12 - 16 years from now.
They'll get it, provided when they do clubs can trade them anywhere they want without the players permission, I have no issue with it.

I feel like this leads to the end of equalisation. We're seeing it now with Brisbane, they keep drafting kids but can't get them to stay. These rule changes significantly devalue draft picks both on the draft date and as tools to facilitate trade. After a certain point you might as well throw away the draft (and the minimum cap spend) and just focus on the salary cap.

Thats fine for the players we are happy to let go. Lets take the Kolo. He could , with us liking it or not... just say Im out of here to GC. Obviously it works both ways if GC Kolo had not well and resigned with a better wage. Id also say this will in some way mean the comp issue will be less of an issue as teams may just decide to take the FA. For example if we are losing a Motlop and could get a Zac Jone or even a Kolo type , we would probably not care as much about what the FA is worth.

How will it affect Brisbane for example or Gold Coast. The young guys they have brought in , but in 4 years clubs can access them if they are not getting the best money. Yes Brisbane is losing players now but it may just set them as a development club.

There is only one thing I know for sure... these things never quite work as most thought they would.
