The Unofficial List Management thread... :-)

I am suspecting some decent changes to our list again so I will have a crack-

Retired
Hodge
Gibson
Delisted
Willsmore
Whitecross
Trade options
Puopolo (second round pick)
Frawley (hopefully used to get Lever)
Vickery ( anything)
Breust (if we are any remote chance of a big fish then he and another player may be used)
Schoenmakers (let him go to free agency and thank him for his service)

I think you definitely delist Willsmore, probably Miles also. We have Hodge, Gibson who will retire, Surman who already has and Fitzpatrick who probably will.

I think Whitecross may end up at Brisbane, Puopolo will end up elsewhere - add to that a player or two like Stratton, he would net us a decent pick. You're having a laugh if you think we get rid of Frawley, he's our only experienced and viable 1v1 key defender. Same with Vickery, we definitely lay in that bed now we've made it.

Breust won't want to go, he is contracted; but Schoenmakers, Duryea may be encouraged to explore free agency.

After getting rid of ten last year I'm not expecting at large cull this time. 3 confirmed retirements add a couple of delistments, and a possible player trade swaps should be enough.

He will be in WA for at least the next 6 years.
He left a year early so the kids wouldn't have their schooling disrupted
I know he said that & im not disputing it but it means he'll be in WA for at least 12yrs.
Schooling does last just 6 yrs... thankfully

6 yrs til the twins finish primary school
His eldest will be in yr 7 and being scouted by numerous schools on full scholarships

Of all our past champions, only Leigh Matthews has had any coaching success at AFL level. No doubt Mitch was an absolute champ as a player, but there is no indication that this will translate to coaching.

I would have more faith in Hodgey making the grade as a coach.

Completely disagree - listening to Mitchell talk about footy he has obviously got an excellent footy brain. That is evident in the way he plays. Not that Hodge is all brute force and no footy smarts - I just think when it comes to footy IQ that Mitchell is a step above Hodge, but Hodge can make up for this by being an absolute competitor and a bit more of a hard nut.

Mitchell has already completed his coaching qualifications and has been setting up this path for years. I think his tendency to have been a shit stirrer in the past would need some adjusting in a coaching role - but I am sure he knows that more than anyone. I can see Mitchell becoming an excellent coach. I am not sure that Hodge will even go into coaching - dare say he'll make his money in the media instead.

He has a great mind for the game, but I have my doubts as well. He seems like the type of person who will demand a lot of their team and might not have the best emotional intelligence when it comes to teaching younger players - a bit like Nathan Buckley.

Well, we shall see won't we.

And I am of the opinion that Hodgey understands more of the game than you give him credit for.

Kind of agree with you arupist. I also think he would have a better rapport with players.

Not just that. He would command respect like no other.

A great footy brain will only take you so far in the coaching ranks these days
The thing great coaches have is the ability to get an individual"s best out of them no matter whether you hit, throw, kick or swim

I think Clarko showed that with Sicily. I must admit I was calling for Sis to move to full forward, but Clarko's thinking was where will he learn the most? That may have cost us a finals berth, but just making up the numbers ins't on Al's agenda, he is always aiming at the final objective.

I'm laughing at you...if you think we will trade Stratts. (if he wants to go that maybe different and i dont believe he does)
Stratts is held in the highest regard ....a leader and doer .Will not be traded.
and Sam Mitchell will never coach Hawthorn.

Laugh all you want, but the question was posed to Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis last year. If they're not untouchable neither is Ben Stratton.

Nobody is untouchable...however there are about 6-8 players who will not be traded.
You wrongly identified Stratts as a possible trade ; and you correctly identified Frawley as a non trade.

I cant see eithe Hodge not Mitch being senior coaches.

Hodge would be great as a defensive coach, for obvious reasons but am not sure has the strategic mind for a full game plan etc.

Mitch I dont think has the warm and empathetic persona that coaches these days need e.g. Clarko, Bevo, Simmo, etc. Clarko has numerous times mentioned you need to have a teach's mind set to be a good caoch these days. Mitch am sure could tell people what to do, but his style is not one that I expect everyone would react warmly to, from what I have heard out on the track. Expect he is a little like Bucks in that respect. Perhaps he'll change a bit as a coach though.

I'd get rid of Vickery before Puopolo if only to make your post more aesthetically pleasing.
