Autopsy Round 9, 2019: Collingwood v St.Kilda *Bruce 100th, Savage 150th, Young debut*

Fact is we were right in the game until our very poor efforts in the last quarter allowed their greater class to shine through.

There’s a fair bit of dare and promise with this group, and they’re still very very young; there’s something there to work with, but we’re not going to see much in the way of success in the short term.

It is what it is. All the tantrums in the world aren’t going to change that.

We were in the game till 3/4 time but then we just gave up. We needed someone to lift our players a true leader but no one stood up.

Marshall played well against league's best Rickman. Dunstan tried his best. Second quarter was good. We had almost 40 tackles same as our total tackles count against GWS.

Young played ok in his first AFL game.

Ross has become a total liability. Newnes game is sliding. Kent must have kicked more out on full then behind or a goal.

Next week, it's going to be a good game against Carlton. Both the team's got young players. If we continue to play like our 4th quarter next week then Richo might have to announce his resignation in post game interview next week.

71 points, right on track with our average score for the past 18 months.

Need to try a different forward setup, Bruce is just not effective enough in more games than not.

Brown only had one possible matchup in that game which was Reid, yet we see him on a lightning quick small all
game?

Good debut from young, Wilkie very good again. DMAC showing his glaring flaws today.

Dunstan good but his disposal really hurts at times.

Give Kent a spell, not sure why the commentators keep talking him up.

Groundhog day. Dominant early but wasted shots on goal. Should have had a healthy lead going into the last. With the cattle we have the bllwout was not unexpected. Need some luck with injuries. Our best side would be in that til the end

6.6 to 1 straight in the last. Disappointing considering the effort we put in for 3 quarters. Just looked like we threw in the towel.
Hard not to reach the same conclusion. Outworked, out ran. Shameful really. Made a mockery of the first three quarters? Times like this you know who to keep and who to discard. We've been building long enough. Tired of the talk.

There is such a thing as an honourable loss. This is not one of them.

Did well to stay in touch for 3 quarters , but class midfield told the story in the end , can not defend when the ball is being pin pointed into the the Magpies forward line.

We all know we need good mids - lets hope this last quarter hasn't destroyed our confidence.

Sidebottom , Grundy , Treleor , Pendlebery told the story.

A lot of lesson's learned - Marshall will only get better from playing against the best
Dunstan did ok
Billings did ok
Membery did ok
Battle did ok

a apart from these 4 not many have broken even.

Next weeks game will have our season on the line.

The points kicked in the 2nd quarter set us up for the last quarter blowout.

Was a really good effort for 3 quarters, but I think we all saw the capitulation coming.

Must kill the group, the energy expended with that pressure to kick so many points and not get ahead on the scoreboard.

Ah well, another game into a pretty inexperienced group.

On to next week.

only gonna look at the positives

Dunstan had a fantastic game, poor disposal but made up for it with 9 clearances and 17 contested possessions - 73% TOG which is more than normal? glad we trusted him to run it out a bit more..

Billings played well, people potting him need to gtfo. Worked hard, hit up leads. 29 touches.

Marshall, matched it with the best. Incredible rise from him this year.

and people potting Dmac.. got called for a soft free, and then made a blue not getting boot to ball, but otherwise played an ok game, not his best, but was tight defensively and took some nice marks.

If we're going to move Battle forward it should be mid way in the second or third quarter when it opens up. Late in the fourth with a forgone conclusion.. eh. I'd like to see him start a game forward soon, he looks good up there. If it's not working, roll him back.

Same mouths that said Billings is AA earlier in the year, saying he isn't worth 900k.

First of all, he played well, he made some crucial mistakes, so did Pies elite talent.

Seb Ross, isn't your Patty Cripps to lead the way. He is your 2nd or 3rd best mid like Liam Shiel at Hawks, gets plenty of it.

Once our inside cripples, our outside is invisible.

Damn that last quarter was very dissapointing after we played really well in the 1st 3. Had our chances when we dominated in the 2nd quarter but kicked points.

Resting Marshall for the first 10 minutes of the last quarter was a masterstroke. Sidebottom killed us in the 4th as well.

Thought Dunstan was our best mid today. To compete with the top teams i dont think we can be that defensive, we need to try and win our own ball. Young was amazing in his 1st game. Looked like our forward line looked dangerous in the 2nd and 3rd which is a good sign as while we played well in the 1st it looked really hard to get any shots on goal.

Who goes out next week? Tough to say. Myb Paton, Phillips or Marsh for me..

Usual whingers are gonna whinge.

Usual overly optimistic types are going to say we’re just off the pack leaders.

Neither are right of course, but that won’t stop either group. Fact is we were right in the game until our very poor efforts in the last quarter allowed their greater class to shine through.

Of course you are right, but I'm still a bit gutted.

The reality is though that if you play like that (particularly the last quarter) then it makes it much more difficult to justify not picking certain players (eg Brandon White).

Win and no cares who is in or out.

Lose and questions will be asked.

6.6 to 1 straight in the last. Disappointing considering the effort we put in for 3 quarters. Just looked like we threw in the towel.
The boys are clearly trying.. even though I’m most critical of our disposals/game plan, I can’t fault the players for not trying. It’s just we are not that good. Collingwood have an awesome midfield, a potent forward line other looks like scoring every time the ball go in, and a resolute backline.. The fact that we stuck around for 3 quarters is a testament to our defensive structure and hard work.. however, our defensive game plan doesn’t help us to score.. and their dominant mids just took over in the last, Dunstan, Steele and Ross has been fighting the 5-6 mids from Collingwood (Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Trealoar, Aish, Adams, Beams, Mayne), they just didn’t have enough help.

Billings got 29 possessions @75% efficiency, but what impact did have? apart from short kicks in the backline, and couple of kicks to their defenders, not much.. Dunstan had 30 disposals@70%, but won a lot of the footy.. and spot up our forwards well a couple of times.. but he didn’t have much help out there, we need more of Dunstan, player that can win the ball and move forward, and less of the seagul type that can rack up possesion, but not have much impact..

Sinclair, Acres, Gresham can’t play full time mids.. we need 2-3 that can.. and have Gresham rotate between mid and forward.
