serious question?

astbury is underated as a defender here...with grimes and Vals He has controlled our back half in 2018 without Rance

astbury and grimes and V,as have done the work of several men ...undersized as a collective yet powerful as a unit

without Astbury, it exposes Grimes and others...
Who comes in to replace him?
logically it would be Garth (but to an extent)

garth alone doesn’t cut it as he doesn’t fulfil the Astbury role and needs support
if Rance was still in the side...no issues

Dont underestimate Dave
I wasn’t bagging him, your post sounded like he was injured?

VFL and development coach Xavier Clarke provides a summary of how the Tigers’ players performed in Saturday's 16 v 16 scratch match against St Kilda.

Patrick Naish

"It was a very good game from Patrick, he played on the wing majority of the game and won a lot of the football. The pleasing thing was his defensive efforts, which is something he's been working on, but also he got rewarded with the ball. He's playing good football at the moment and was also rewarded with three goals."

Daniel Rioli

"I thought his work rate was really good. He worked hard, being 16 v 16, it forces you to, but we know that's when he's at his best, when he's working hard and running hard. He had a lot of the ball and it was great to see him being able to win possession, apply pressure and also kick two goals."

Ivan Soldo

"He was great. Some of his offensive stuff was really good and he provided a great contest in the ruck for us. He played forward at times and was also rewarded with two goals."

Mabior Chol

"He's up and about, he had a very good game. He worked really hard to get to the spots he had to, so that the ball could be kicked to him, or so he could outwork his opponent and beat them one-on-one, and was rewarded on the scoreboard. It was great to see him play another good game."

Riley Collier-Dawkins

"Still continuing to play well over the past couple of weeks. He's putting pressure on which is great, laying tackles and being able to win the ball around congestion. He was also rewarded with two goals so it was great to see him get on the scoreboard. He kicked the first goal of the game from around 50m out on the run which was fantastic for him."

Ryan Garthwaite

"He's been solid for us down back these past three weeks. He's hard to beat one-on-one and he prides himself on his contested efforts. He had nine spoils for the game which was absolutely huge. He really sets the scene for us defensively, he's in good form at the moment."

Derek Eggmolesse-Smith

"He had some really good patches throughout the game. His ability to win the ball and see the game and use it well is his biggest strength, and it was great to see him lay four tackles as well. He'll continue to work on his game and his areas that he needs to improve on but it was good to see him have a consistent game throughout the four quarters."

Oleg Markov

"Worked very hard throughout the game. He was open a lot but unfortunately didn't get used as much as he would have liked. But his work-rate and his speed are certainly his biggest strengths so he'll continue to play to his strengths in that space."

Jack Graham

"He was pretty good. We know his work rate and pressure are his biggest strengths and he had 11 tackles for the game which was phenomenal. He won a lot of the ball, it was great to see him come back and play in the midfield the whole game and show us how he plays his footy.

Jack Aarts

"He's in good form. His ability to get up and down the ground and work hard are his biggest strengths. He sees the game well and was also rewarded with two goals. He was the second carryover emergency so he only played three quarters for us."

Callum Coleman-Jones

"Continues to impress. We mixed him up in the ruck with Soldo and his ability to move around the ground for a big guy is really good, he can get forward and take marks. His ability to play as a forward and as a ruck is something that can work in his favour, he's in good form."

Marlion Pickett

"Played midfield the whole game and had a high impact around the ball. He had nine tackles which was pleasing. He played a pretty good game, he was able to get after the ball and be around contests, and he was also able to transition from contest to contest."

Ben Miller

"Continuing to play consistent footy which has been fantastic to watch. His defensive efforts and his one-on-one contests are what he's been working on the most and we've seen reward for that and the way he's been playing. He had four spoils for the game which was really good."

Fraser Turner

"It was one of the best all-round games I've seen Fraser play. He played at half-back for the whole game and was really good in his defensive efforts, which is something he's been working on. He was aggressive around the ball which was great, it was good to see him do the things he's been working on throughout the pre-season around his pressure and defensive actions and I thought he showed that really well."

Luke English

"Played a different role at half-back. He did really well, his ability to defend one-on-one was fantastic and his ability to play our system as well was really good. So, it was pleasing to see him go down back and have an impact outside of his usual role as an inside midfielder."

Hugo Ralphsmith

"Hugo's been playing at half-forward for most of the time but went back to the wing for this game. I thought he did really well, he's got a great running ability. He's got good speed and endurance and he sees the game fairly well, he's certainly not afraid to go for his marks. I liked the way he played the wing role, he got the ball, used it well and hit the scoreboard."

Bit off topic here but in isolation have been listening to a lot of my favourite old bands to keep my sanity from the crap on TV. I'm a Midnight Oil tragic. Never forget after the 2017 GF seeing them at the Myer Music Bowl with my wife. Beautiful evening, lights were on at the G and Peter Garrett walks out and they crank into the classic "Outside World" from the classic 10 to 1 album. Robbie Hurst a madmen on drums. Tigers and the Oils. Best month of my life!!

The more I think about it the more I feel give some older boys a season off and get some footy into the rest. See who can play and who can’t, could be a master stroke long term.
We re working through who can add to the senior squad or not , Pickett and stack have been backed and will now make way for one or two more . I see 4 more changes in the wings

At the very least playing kids like Balta, CC-J, RC-D Naish Dow will put a rocket up the arses of those who are terrible atm.
Lets see how it goes with a bit of size height and structure in the side.persevere with the kids but ffs play em in their best positions and give em a bloody good run at it.
And that's what they should be doing to some degree regardless of how the team is travelling.

Definitely play the two rucks against Gawn, smash into him and wrestle him all afternoon, nullify their first use - which is the only thing that keeps them competitive with top sides - and hurt their mids as much as possible. Good to see Soldo respond the way he did at the lower level, sounds like he was BOG at face value from the reports, pleasing to see him doing well offensively and hitting the scoreboard.

Naish has probably earned a run and can bring some of the outside ball movement attributes we've been lacking.

Wouldn't mind seeing one of the 'blue collar hard workers' like Aarts or Markov rewarded for their efforts, sends a good message to the rest of the list.

Anyone reckons they reason why Pickett has been playing s**t for us last two games is because of less game time ? 20 min quarters he gets more chance in the middle. He is the rotation mid in our team but for 2s he is number 1 and he dominates

Also naish in , we got rid of Ellis, naish is most logical in . Out kmac
Out stack in chol or balta for 2nd ruck

Thats it for now, maybe in rioli for more FWD pressure

I don’t mean just give them a whole season off just manage them but play blokes and have a look at them. It’s basically a season of practice matches.

I agree with the sentiment but I think that comes a bit later when you realise you are out of commission completely for this season. At some point we surely have to pull a trigger on Coleman-Jones, it is really obvious Adelaide will come knocking with an offer good enough to get him from us, O’Brien is getting smashed week after week, Walker is playing like a statue, and CCJ will be in his 4th year next year, a great time to acquire a ruckman/key position player. They will have cap space to burn and a role for him to step straight into. So do you play him? If he plays and plays well you boost his trade value and probably get back a decent pick for him. If he plays and doesn’t do so well you could possibly put Adelaide off, but I suspect he would show more than enough to keep them interested. Alternatively, if he plays and does well enough for Richmond to let Nankervis go(he is out of contract,) maybe you could boost CCJ onto enough cash to have a chance of keeping him. If we lose too many more before winning then that is probably essential to start playing this bloke, even if it means shifting Riewoldt to another role. Who knows, he could even make both the forward line and the ruck work better for us.

It does show the difficulty of drafting this type of player really, when it comes time for them to step into senior footy you would probably rather be the poaching club. Us in 2017 with Nankervis 4th in line at perennial contender Sydney, we got him for his 4th season. Carlton this year getting Pittonet for his 6th season from Hawthorn, Fremantle in 2019 got Lobb for his 6th season from GWS. Suns got Witts from Collingwood in 2017 after his fifth season. Port got Lycett from Eagles although later in his career after 8 seasons. Port also got Dixon from GCS after 5 seasons. MacEvoy to Hawthorn, Stanley to Geelong....

Then there is Balta. Teams are likely to come for these guys with good offers. I am inclined to say let’s try to make space for them in the team sooner rather than later, but it will mean trading out a Riewoldt for nothing, or a Rance or unloading a still young and clearly very decent when right Nankervis for a low pick. The effect this has on the team is incalculable really, but it is not likely to be good in the short term.

Do you maintain the fabric of the team and just take the pain of losing a player likely to become a future star elsewhere, or do you start looking to build your next premiership spine now? This is the very tricky situation the club needs to manage, and it is one that no matter which way they go they cannot be certain of getting it right.

I'm not for wholesale changes, albeit I agreed with the four we made after the Hawks loss.
Probably the one guy I'd like to see in is Garthwaite, and given an extended run.
Given the loss of Rance and with Astbury going down, it's time to see what Garth can and can't do.
I reckon Balta is the better bet, especially longer-term, but itl;s more a case of we need to see what we've got here and if young garth can cut the mustard.

After listening to the injury report, Burge reckons Dave will be out for around 5 weeks...damn!
Caddy should ok...
Dusty pulled up ok

therefore my changes

Out Dave IN Garth
Out Ross IN Pickett

Id like Chol to come in after some good form in scratch matches (5 goals last game)
Naishy deserves a go as well...we need speed (maybe for KMac)

cant see us making 4 changes though

Heaven help us if Garthwaite is the go-to. Outstanding VFL player but far too slow at AFL level. Monstered four times in seven matches last year. To be fair, they were in nightmare games for us but he single-handedly cost us the Adelaide game pre-bye and was woeful against GWS, Geelong and North.
