Who gets the feeling the crows will turn it on against us and finally get a win.......I just get that feeling cause that sh*t always happens to us!!
For the start of this season and all of last I always go into a game with an uneasy feeling of playing a shit team into form and it is almost always decided by the end of the first quarter or early second. We won’t turn up for the majority of the first quarter this weekend but if we’re less than a goal down at worst (and/or have kicked 2-3 late goals on the trot) we’ll go into win comfortably.

If we allow a shit side to jump us and get their tail up, and we aren’t able to respond quickly (usually by not taking good chances), we go into our shells and it turns into a close scrap. Sydney on the weekend was a good example of late first quarter goals, mostly Jakes 55m monster, that got everyone fired up.

There’s plenty of GC/Carlton/St Kilda games over the last few years where we’ve been the better side for the majority of the early parts of games but haven’t applied scoreboard pressure and they’ve made a game of it. Even GC this year, we dominated the first quarter, game was still alive, they overrun us with the belief we allowed to grow. If the margin is 3-4 goals in our favour at the first break (if we take our chances it’s at least that), it’s an entirely different game.

Like Cameron for Jones if fit. Perfect swap (and I think Cameron is best 22).

Also like the idea of taking the opportunity to use this 'easy' match to get another young player into the mix.

But ... if none of that is happening what about Jetta for Jones? Let Cole, Duggan, Nelson, Rotham and Watson fight over the HBF-BP spots. Jetta could play forward for the remainder of his career and/or until Rioli is available again. Just a thought?

I was thinking this could have been the perfect game to rest JK & Hurn and debut Bailey and give Allen a full game forward. And then bring in either Franky or Rotham for Hurn, But we’re 3-1 in the hub, by doing that the lads could think the game is in the bag and not turn up for a must win game.

But really would love to see XON, Camo, Williams & Franky/Rotham named. They're all competitors.

B: Cole Barrass Sheppard
HB: Duggan McGovern Nelson
C: Gaff Yeo X.O’Neill
HF:Waterman Darling Cripps
F: Cameron Allen Ryan
R: Naitanui Kelly Sheed

INT: Williams Redden Ah Chee Watson/Rotham

Having watched the Crows play Fremantle, l am pretty confident that they are not up to it.

Their forward line is horrible. Lachlan Murphy, although he kicked poorly for goal, is one of only two players, the other being Lynch, who look anywhere near AFL standard. Tex is cooked, Billy Frampton fumbles a lot and isn't at the standard, young 'not so young' McAdam is playing his first handful of games, and is physically undeveloped, Polholke doesn't get involved much.

The midfield isn't great either. Sloane is probably injured, Brad Crouch is a good player but he is fighting a lone hand.
Most of their good players are in the backline but even they only look half the players they once were.

In sum, they are a dispirited rabble. If we lost to them that would be really bad. Adelaide are at a very low ebb. I thought Sydney were weak but Adelaide are two levels below them, they must be raging favourites for the spoon. It happens, like us in 2008. We are not in great form but we have played two top teams in strange conditions and a young, enthusiastic team who jumped us on their home deck. Adelaide aren't anywhere near the standard of these teams and won't be this year. Losing to them would be a disaster.

I'd say that these last few years have been Adelaides lowest point as a club. The mass exodus, the ever-worsening information about the infamous camp, their current form, all of it points to a club at rock bottom. Losing to them wouldn't be a disaster, it would in all likelihood be a season killer.

FB: Hurn, Barrass, Sheppard
HB: Jetta, McGovern, Nelson
C: Duggan, Redden, Gaff
HF: Cripps, Darling, Waterman
FF: Ryan, Kennedy, Cameron
R: Naitanui, Kelly, Yeo
I: Allen, Sheed, Cole, Ah Chee

Jetta in for Shuey -> Duggan to wing with Redden inside, as it seemed to be in the 2nd half vs Sydney. Very impressed by his game.
Cameron in for Jones -> Pretty much a straight swap, but a shame as I thought Jones was quite important with his defensive pressure.
THis is a well balanced side, Duggan looked good and sharp with his run. Same with Cole.

Who was playing the defensive winger with Brander out?

Maybe they've finally decided to drop that crap?

Could have been one of the things Simpson and Steve Bandy touched on in Eagle Review about how we hadn't adapted our game style to 2020 yet and decided to change things around dramatically in the swans game. Up until that point we were stubbornly doing our own thing without adapting to the competition.

Hopefully Hugh Greenwood continues to stick it to them on the socials. Good lulz to be had there.

Ahh good. Glad we wasted 3 games to work that out.

Jetta is too good not to be playing, but Duggan and Cole seemed to thrive in his role as attacking half backs. Is it worth trying him up forward as a replacement for Jones? He kicked 40-something one year for Sydney and a guy who can bomb goals from 55 on the run is always handy.

Did suggest this myself BUT only if Cameron is not available and they are too afraid to try a new face. Jetta could be the Rioli replacement for the remainder of his career (given Nelson, Cole, Duggan, Watson and Rotham are our the future of our backline - apart from Shep, Gov and TB).

But I prefer the latter two options (Cameron or new face).

To be fair, Simpson has only just worked out that Oscar is a better option that Hickey..
That's not being fair, that's reinforcing the point!

I felt a certain deja vu with Brander and Hickey out there, similar to the arse-end of both Malthouse and Worsfold's tenure where they'd shove tall players in everywhere.

It seems pretty obvious from the outside.

When Nic is Fit

Average/Poor opposing Rucks = Oscar plays no doubt.

Strong Opposition Ruck = Vardy comes into consideration

When Nic is Out:

Hickey plays

Oscar is a gem but putting him into a meat-grinder against the Lycetts/Gawns/Goldsteins of the world has to be thought about in a longer term sense IMO.

Williams should be ahead of Vardy in that situation.

You're not wrong, but that's where Williams is the clear next choice to come in. He needs to be exposed to AFL level sooner rather than later.

Young and underdeveloped yes, but at least has the height and physique of a ruckman who can mix it with other big bodies.

He's also a combative type player who chases and tackles with intent. Not even mentioning what a fresh Williams could do with his leap.

I like Hickey, but he's wasted completely as a 2nd ruck playing limited minutes. He's an endurance beanpole, not someone who's going to excel in bursts.

Vardy i feel isn't even in the discussion anymore, in fact he's delist fodder. Williams proved in the pre season how far ahead he is of Vardy now.

Wonder if Vardy could be put as a trade? Maybe not worth much but we didn't exactly break the bank to get him.

Yep. Which only adds additional curiosity as to why an impact 2nd ruckman still hasn't played for us this year.

There honestly couldn't be a more obvious case for Williams to play in 2020.

Impactful ruckman who does well in bursts, perfect chop out :whitecheck:
Playing limited minutes as support to Naitanui, easy way to introduce him to the highest level :whitecheck:
Reduced quarters and game time in 2020, his tank won't be a problem now :whitecheck:
He was one of our better players in his last pre season hitout, looked at home vs the bombers and hit the scoreboard :whitecheck:
Kennedy and Darling struggling up forward, Williams kicked 16 goals from 20 WAFL games in 2019 :whitecheck:

If he wasn't over his pre season injury so Hickey got the nod in round 1 that's fair enough, but he should have been first cab off the rank once the season restarted properly.

The fact we're 5 games in now and Williams still hasn't had a debut (and probably won't this week given how we won) is a head scratcher IMO.

I'm kinda with DS on this where they should start pushing NN to play higher percentages of games in the ruck so that we can get away with Allen as the second ruck. Having a second ruck worked when one of them is there to negate the other ruck and apply pressure in the stoppages (Lycett, 2018 Vardy), but Hickey isn't suited to that role.

If NN isn't fit enough to play the vast majority of the game in the ruck then the coaches should be pushing him to get fitter. Surely they're not just doing it to protect him from another knee injury

Building on his promising WAFL season last year, the imposing 199cm forward-ruck came on in leaps and bounds over summer.

Track watchers have noted Williams’ growing frame, fierce attack on the football in the air and prodigious leap – all positive signs for his development after being selected with pick No.35 in the 2018 draft.

Whether Williams will develop into more of a forward or ruck is a question he has been asked regularly, but he enjoys splitting time between both roles.

”I think that’s one of my strengths, I can play a couple of positions and feel comfortable,” Williams said.

“I’ve turned into a pretty big guy and I’ve learnt how to throw my weight around a little bit. There is probably a little bit of white line fever in there as well.

Nah let's leave him playing scrimmages for the rest of the year, makes sense.

The only way around it would be to drop one of Darling or Kennedy and replace with Allen as full time KPF, so that Williams can switch into the forward/ruck role. It won't happen though so we'll have to wait for an injury.
