Name some players like Jason Heatley (one season wonders)

Not only did Heatley kick 73 goals in '97 (from just 20 games- including 3 finals), but he kicked 7 (straight) in the prelim (on a wet night), and 3.3 in the grannie.

Did kick 48 from just 20 games the following year as well though, so that was still very decent.

A 2 season wonder.

Jack Anthony.

Kicked 50.28 for the Magpies across 24 games in 2009 as a 21-year-old in his second season.

Would only play 15 more games in his career across three more seasons, kicking 8.4.
Yeah we got sucked in bad by that one season. Possibly the equal worst recruit Freo ever picked up which is a phenomenal effort in itself.

Paul Medhurst. Spent 5 years at Freo doing nothing, gets traded to Collingwood as steak knives with Tarrant. Explodes in 2008 for 50 goals and 16 touches a game, kicks 6 on Anzac Day, runner up in the BnF, All Australian all aged 26. Form drops right back to the norm the next year and by 2010 he's out of the team and retires aged 28.

He kicked 91 goals for Freo across 2003-04 and is 7th leading goal kicker.
Kicked 50 goals in a season at Freo but typically ‘emerged’ as a top flight player after moving to a Melbourne club.

Actually the title is a bit harsh. Heatley was far from a one season wonder. He starred in the WAFL for several years, while struggling to get a game with the Eagles. Then after his "wonder year", the next season he was still the Saints top goalkicker. Even after that he averaged something like two goals per game.

Guerra had a stand out season in 2004 playing for Stkilda kicking 50 goals.
29 goals is not 50.

Besides, him at Hawthorn was a vastly different player to him at St Kilda.

West Perth legend Paul Mifka gave him a good thug-like touch up in the 95 Grand FInal.

Yes, that was a brilliant piece of coaching by West Perth. That year Heatley had kicked 123 goals for Subiaco. First move in the GF? Physically attack him off the play.

Brad Pearce - Carlton - 1995. Blues picked him up from the Bad News Bears in 1994. He played 2 games for them in 1994 and then in 1995, their premiership team, he played in 23 games and kicked 52.40, he was 24. Injuries and poor form got him then. He had to more seasons of 30+ but his numbers in every category were miles off his '95 numbers. After that premiership season he played another 52 games and was done at 28 years of age. He got to 79 career games and kicked just a shade under 2 goals per game.

Drugs.

Brent Guerra never kicked 50 goals in a season. In 2004 he kicked 29 goals as we played him as a forward.

When he went to Hawthorn he was played as a defender, and played in the 2008 side that won the flag, playing in almost every game for them that season. Arguably he was much better as a defender too.

About as far away from a one season wonder as you can get.

'Rocket' Rod Owen, although maybe not really a one season wonder.

Debuted at St Kilda as a 16 year old in 1983. He debuted in round 1, Lockett debuted in round 4 and was a year older.

In Rocket's first 3 seasons he only played in one winning side. I always remember he had attitude / fitness / application issues. He always looked like he was having a good time away from the footy, he could seriously play though.

In 1987, which looks like it was his best season, he kicked 7.1 v the eventual premiers Carlton in a 1 point loss. Lockett managed 3.2 in his Brownlow year and big Stewie Loewe 1.2.

Two season wonder.

He went downhill because Port traded in Ryder and he went from a #1 ruck with Trengove backing him up a little bit to sharing it 50/50. Some ruckmen work in tandem, some don't.
Shame that Port didn't take the high draft pick offered for trade by the Bulldogs (approx pick 10) for him just before Lobbe's form dropped off, Port declined as they were intent on the Ryder-Lobbe combination. Fast-forward a year later, Ryder on the ASADA suspension and Lobbe wasn't even getting a game.

Also seconding the suggestion Brad Pearce from Carlton. I recently watched Tredrea's breakout game in 1998 where he kicked 8.4 (and then dislocated his kneecap). Pearce had kicked 5 by three quarter time and I couldn't remember ever seeing Pearce play before

Rod Blake, Geelong, father of Mark.

In 1980 he was the Brownlow favourite, he finished 3rd from memory. He was gone 3 seasons and 35 games later. John Mossop was emerging at the time so that may have put paid to him. Was serviceable in 1979 then exploded as a 28 year old in 1980. He had been about for a decade but never put numbers together like he did in that 1980 season.

heatley was able to transfer better than spinks

WAFL had a glut of key forwards who were too good for WAFL - but for some reason couldn’t transfer it to AFL

Spinks, fewster, Donnelly, groom and heatley to a point

in particular Brett Spinks had all the tools - and absolutely monstered WAFL footy

Hahaha, this is gold. Tom Boyd was an amazing investment, his career obviously didn't pan out as we'd have hoped but to call him a waste of money is hilarious. He's a Bulldogs legend.
He's also a 2-game wonder, not even good enough to be a 1-season wonder.

Fortunate for him and the Bulldogs that one of his 2 good games was a grand final.

Still fits the purpose of this thread perfectly.

No need to get your panties in a twist.

Even sadder thing is that he qualified for a premiership medal.
As did his teammates who were playing for less coin and were likely more deserving of their pay.
All of Essendon's flags were a waste of money, by your logic.
I can't remember Essendon paying $5,000,000 to anyone for playing two good games.

Tom Boyd had a good 2016 GF and that's it. He's a poor mans version of Clark Keating.
