I'm not a massive fan of Petty forward tbh. I'm a fan of him, just not as a forward at this stage. Couldn't agree more about our spacing though.

I'm not really either, but he's clearly the best compliment we have to JVR imo. If we are going to recruit someone they need to be someone who can be a lead up target up the field first and foremost. Hopefully Jefferson can fill this role sooner rather than later.

Like the look of Jefferson, but still leaves us with two very young key forwards, so just solidifies that mature key forward need IMO.

Plus, reckon the backline misses Petty.

Could we tempt Tom Lynch out of Richmond? I also think Harryben McKay could be great swing men.

2024 Forward Line

HF: T Mac - BBB - Schache
F: Petty - Lynch - JVR

with Harryben, Max and Grundy pushing forward to create a 9 or 10 pronged tall attack, I think our highering of the eyes will pay off.

This obsession with needing big key forwards to take big marks is outdated from about 20 years ago. Port destroyed is without theirs, Collingwood are best in the league with Mihocek as a key. Geelong have 2 gun keys who play nothing like the other keys in the league.

Meanwhile Carlton have 2 and they still suck. Don't need arbitrary number of guys over 200cm. You need mids who kick to advantage and forwards who can win or at least no lost one on ones. That's our problem

We should get Sam Weideman and Jesse Hogan back though.

We don’t have the money to attract a key forward.

JVR will need a rest sooner rather than later, but the fundamental plan has to be to stick with him through thick and thin. He’s our best option and it’s how he will develop.

Maybe get some smalls around him with actual energy though, rather than hoping guys like Chandler will somehow get less tired without a rest.

Money and picks, we've got a completely stagnant side which needs help in more than one spot and people are still crying for a key forward which would take most of our draft capital again

I’d love Ben King to fall in our laps for pick 10, but it won’t happen. Nor would it fix our issues. If you win clearances and move the ball quickly, you don’t need a gun key forward. We seem to have sacrificed the clearances for an extra man behind the ball, and we don’t use that extra man with any real effect. It’s so frustrating.

Don't reckon any reasonable posters are suggesting we throw 2mil at McKay, more looking at reasonable options.

Do you have any solid info on where our cap is at? I've read varying opinions on it. It's looking more and more like all/most of Brown, TMac, Melksham, Hibberd, Harmes and Tomlinson could very well be gone (for differing reasons) so I don't think it's that tight a squeeze that we can't attract a decent player tbh.

The other thing people ignore is Fritsch. You stick a guy like King down there and stick half of our inside 50s through him which is exactly what this team will do and Fritschs goals will go down. We already score enough, a big key forward won't just = more goals for the team. It'll equal more for him while more than likely causing others to kick less.

I'm not even sure in my mind that a high priced key forward is in the top 5 type of players id go for

Is anyone available though? I wouldn’t be against a cheap ish option, but who are we going to get that is above the Weideman/Schache “take a punt” level?

Riccardi, Treacy are more of the same. Georgiades is coming off an ACL and probably goes back to Perth, not exactly a full KPF either.

I guess we could try pinch Darling for a year or two.

I agree. There’s simply no point bringing in a key forward unless the system and entries are fixed. Having a gun KPF down there won’t suddenly fix it.

Dunnno tbh, and there's always a couple of surprises around trade time. Just reckon we can walk and chew gum at the same time, we're not going to go into the offseason ONLY chasing a key forward, you always get people that don't understand that. With TMac and Brown both quite possibly gone, it's 100% going to be an area of need for our list though.

We just need COMPETITIVE forwards that BRING THE BALL TO GROUND. We need to just get enough HEIGHT AND NUMBERS in the FORWARD 50 and we’ll see OUR METHOD TAKE SHAPE.

Let’s get LEVI CASBOULT and JACOB KOSCHITZKE in…

Sad that this is exactly what Goody is likely thinking.

To be fair, if we'd taken Casboult last year, he would've been a better option than Brown and McDonald. One of the few people that could take a mark with our 'let's launch a rocket into the sun' inside 50s.

Absolutely, he would suit our dumbass game plan much better. But that crap isn't winning you a flag regardless.

Exactly. Our F50 is a mess. It was last season as well. Obviously a mixture of things but Brown and Tmac are cooked. Melksham cooked. Jefferson too early to tell. JVR looks like he'll be ok but still raw. Schache doesn't like contact. ANB isn't a forward. Chandler looked good for a minute. Kozzy and Trac are dangerous forwards but moving forward both probably play more mid time than F50. Petty is a backman and realistically needed there atm. That leaves Fritta and tiny Spargo. And neither are setting the world on Fire.

I know we are desperate for a running defender and a couple of classy mids, but our F50 is f*Ed. And we potentially have Howes who can come in as a running defender and Riv and Koz can spend more time in the middle. We have a few holes but geez that F50 isn't worrying Collingwood in the slightest.

Some good conversations here and I agree a high-priced key forward would be dumb for us right, now.

However, there could be some much cheaper options who should be a big upgrade to Tmac/Brown/Melksham/Schache - perhaps Ricciardi or Armartey or Tracy. Or maybe it's Petty afterall?

But we do need to fix our midfield primarily.

This year is a big opportunity for us. We have two firsts and two seconds, and as previously suggested, I'd absolutely look to trade two of Brayshaw/Salem/Harmes even if we don't get good picks for them, it'd free up cap space to add a good free agent(Gresham?) as well as using our strong draft hand.

I dobut Swans will let Amartey go with Buddy retiring. Last year was the time to go for him, which a few of us called for at the time.

I'd have a big crack at Oscar Allen if WCE were looking for a full-blown rebuild (which they should be) and wanted high draft currency. Apparently Kai Lohmann from the Lions is considered gettable and dominating VFL, does he play more of a Fritsch role?

Eagles wouldn't give Allen away in a million years, unless he absolutely demanded a trade and was out of contract. He's the cornerstone of their rebuild.
