Review R17: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. Melbourne Demons

Soligo has been under performing imo and he's very satisfied with his long term deal. He hasn't had 30 disposals once this season. He needs to lift imo.
Strange post as he had one of his best games for the year today.

He was alright, there were certainly worse players.

Doesn't look as desperate as he was first few games in.

Which is the problems. These stagers are great one or two games when the careers on the line. Do they stay as hungry?

What the hell was he trying to do with his ridiculous attempts at those high marks. He was no chance at marking them but just about injured one of his team mates.

Just a terrible selection again by Nicks.
Was thinking the same. We are so lucky that Murphy doesn’t have Nick Murray’s body or else he would injure half the team!!
Murphy just isn’t up to it and now he’s become a liability

I reckon of all the older guys hes probably the most desperate.

I mean he didn't even get a chance in 2017. However I think he needs to stay at the level he currently is or hes not worth playing

Sat in the southern which I normally hate, but actually gives a good vantage point when your team is getting your arse kicked.

1st half Melbourne were spreading the ground so well and breaking our zone with ease. They did their homework and completely broke us down. Their pressure was high and then used the ball really well. We had some good moments but completely butchered almost every single forward entry even from our best ball users.

First 10 minutes of the 3rd was exactly the same except now we looked shell shocked. Surprisingly we turned it around big time and stopped all of the above.

I personally think today shows we're a very different team this year. Last year would have lost that for sure. Melbourne came to play and played well even after we switched on. We just took over.

Good:

Hard to pick specific players up that high in the stand.

Rankine. Finally stepped up to play. Was clean and finished his work really well.

Fog
Dawson
Peatling

Prob some others but hard to tell. Some had their moments like Curtin and Soligo.

Bad:

Forward entries the worst I've ever seen. Been poor for most of the year. Did they break a record good intercept mark?

TT worst game of the year. Struggled 1v1 surprisingly. Couldn't impact the game.

Murphy. No comments required

Rachele injury. Had to get one eventually.

It’s all he’s got. Look how desperate I am, I try really hard, please keep me in the team.

Adds absolutely nothing

The one positive about Murphy playing today is that, hopefully, it will be impossible to play him as Rachele's replacement next week. Christ almighty he shits me, flying in like a lunatic at balls he has 0% chance of marking and either spoiling his teammates, or giving away free kicks. And then the one time it was his turn to go he stood on the ground and allowed Melbourne to take an uncontested mark!
Some (surprisingly empathetic, for me) thoughts on Murphy, whom I'm over hating/whingeing about.
Not sure why; I just put myself in his shoes for a minute:
--- years ago, he would have had big ambitions and dreams for AFL success.
--- it's not his fault that Nicks is dumb/stubborn enough to select him, in spite of previous fails.
--- Murphy himself likely knows that he's not really up to AFL standard which would be a horrible realisation :sadv1:
--- every time he gets selected, he probably thinks "Oh, hell no ..." and goes off to have a cry in the showers.

Before you have a go at me, jenny61_99 , the above is not disguised sarcasm.
I actually feel sorry for the bloke.

Yep im at that point TBH.

He'll carve out a pretty good SANFL career if he chooses to do so, thats his level.

Shit happens game but we got the four points, so this is a move on and never talk about this again game.

Probably the main positives were Rankine and Fog had big games.

Finally, hopefully Rachele is a-ok. Our depth is already exhausted so it's an injury to the worst person it could happen to.
We’ve barely got anyone out??

we're just dealing with the same shit, unless you want to rob Peter to pay Paul and demote Michaelanny to this role
How about if when Murray returns we play him back, as usual, and move Michalanney into that role, especially since he'll put a lid on some oppo half-back stars and kick a goal or two himself ...? :confusedv1:

I don't think Murray is mobile enough to play on the smaller types.

Keane probably is but hes doing fine as is.

Dees best game for the season IMO.

Maybe, they just lack any potency up forward and not enough variety in the midfield.

Missing all the shots they had early in the first doesn't help, they easily could of been six goals up at quarter time.

I think Goodwin needs to go. They need a fresh voice and game plan.

They checked if May & Sparrow had touched it which they didn’t but they didn’t rewind it far enough back from that front on angle to see McVee touched it even before that vision they started reviewing - splinting hairs though as who cares, it’s just funny how many times it happens with Keays.
It never should have got that far. It should have been a free kick against McVee for climbing the post. Rule 17.11 prohibits shaking or climbing of a goal post. McVee would have got no where near getting a touch on that footy without jumping and swinging off the post.

I doubt he cries in the showers after being selected, but I agree with the rest.

I like Murphy. I've always had a soft spot for players who don't shirk the issue and put in 110% effort. He seems like a quality young man, the kind of guy where you'd be happy if your daughter brought him home. My ire is purely directed at the club that continues to select him over and over again when he has shown that he simply isn't up to it at AFL level. His decision making with and without the ball is just not up to standard.

He should be a "break glass in case of emergency" option when we have ten players on the injury list... not the first-choice replacement in the event of any injury or suspension. We have players crying out for selection at SANFL level, ranging from first-round selections who deserve a chance to debut (Edwards), to quality youth who should get another shot (Draper, Dowling), to fringe players whose career likely depends on getting another shot (Cook, Pedlar), to other senior players who were seemingly retained because they offered some value as depth (Jones, Schoenberg). And yet, Murphy is the one that gets brought in? Again?
