Under 23s trial game between Port & Crows

My future team has Clurey and Howard as the prime key postion backs with Jonas becoming the back up at the end of 2022. Speed and mobility.

That's why I say Clurey is fighting with Jonas this year. Nothing wrong with that.

I thought he was alright in the trial game. Certainly competitive in ruck. Others disagree. It's why eye witnesses are the most unreliable factor in a crime case. ;)

I thought Frampton competed in the ruck but like his future best as a forward second ruck.

He played down back at times this game and looked very poor when down back. Having said that he never plays back and don’t think he was there for any reason other than team matchups/ personnel.

I think his skills and decision making are a concern. Numerous occasions last year his mistakes cost goals. Punching when he should be marking is also a trait he needs to work on. There was an occasion yesterday where he did a great pickup and run on the outer wing but then completely undid it by missing the handball target. Just think this stuff happens too often.

Dougs is elite in the air or heading that way.

Skills are good to excellent for a 200cm bloke.

Decision making and instincts when the ball hits the ground are sub-par.

Very common for young defenders and something that can be improved with time and experience.

Finally finished the replay. It was an impressive game. Definitely more free flowing compared to last year and it was good to see us really look to attack with some regularity and straight down the ground too.

Burton - Worked his way into the game well and thought he had a good second half. He's a perfect utility.

Broadbent - Great to see him back playing footy again. Thought he had a great first half and was almost the on field captain for the day

Marshall - Well beaten but had a few moments of magic. Some great impact with few disposals. Just needs to demand the ball and be more confident in leading towards it.

Frampton - Very happy we have Lycett this year. Billy is no ruckman.

Amon - He was good. Not very good, but good. As I said, there is a spot there for his type of player and I have no doubt he will get games this year.

Butters - Skillful in the middle, reads the play really well, good agility, works to the drop of the ball well across half forward as well. He's a natural

Rozee - In and out but when he was in, he was very good. He's going to do that this year, but have no doubt within 3-4 years he will be elite

Duursma - A very good first half. Hard running, worked hard into space well and just keeps making himself an option. Was good.

Farrell - I like Kane and am looking forward to seeing what he can do this year. Rarely wastes the ball

Bonner - He is the right age & experience level now to really make the most of his talent and start to show what he can do consistently throughout the year. Loved him coming off the back end and impacting the centre square.

Drew - He's just so clever. He got a lot of it, kicked 3 goals, but the stuff that really impressed me was his positioning and his defensive work at stoppages. You watch some of the blocks, little holds, nudges etc which freed up space for his teammates and that is AFL standard stuff already. Has to be a lock for Round 1.

Patmore - Really liked his first half. Still see him playing a fair bit of AFL football this year. I like him on a forward flank, he's a hard runner and knows how to find the ball. Skills have improved and is a good size now.

Frederick - Was the surprise packet for me. Didn't look out of place at all, used his run to advantage on quite a few occasions and did a decent job defensively.

Cox - Fat Cam Hitchcock has some talent, just needs to back himself in. There's a bit of Paul Medhurt about him.

Pudney - Good running power and got himself into great position to receive a heap of times. Wouldnt surprise at all if he debuts by the end of the year.

Has it been confirmed one way or the other whether Woodcock played in this game?

Ive seen the first 3 quarters so far but have not seen him. Does he appear in last quarter?

neddy36 gave us this summary of Tobin Cox after he was drafted and it looks spot on. Hope Tobin backs in his range on his set shots more often than he did on Saturday. Sounds like Tobin had a couple of shoulder injuries as a young player and has worked to put on muscle bulk to strengthen that area. Might wind up serving him well in his pursuit of an AFL career.

Tobin Cox
- starred for SA at the U16s Championships in 2015 primarily as a crumbing small. Played some good bottom age U18s football in the SANFL in 2016 but a shoulder injury early in 2017, wiped his draft year. Put on some genuine size and came back a little heavy for my liking and really struggled to run out games early this year. Played some solid football in the Reserves for Glenelg and stole some League games where he performed admirably. For his size, Tobin is an elite overhead mark and solid kick of the football. Has range with his set shots and was pretty consistent with his scoreboard impact. Didn't have the speed and agility that we saw back as a 16 year old due to extra muscle bulk but if he gets in an elite environment and strikes a better balance with his physique, this could return. Can play midfield, either inside or a wing but I think his greatest strengths are as a small forward.

Saw the good and bad Bonner today. The good Bonner is a damaging player. Is quick, can dance through traffic and is a penetrating kick. Still don't know if he can improve those parts of his game that continue to let him down. This is his fourth year on our list so time isn't on his side.
Interested to get your thoughts on his 'bad' today?

Really like what I saw from Pattmore on Saturday. Thought his first half was good, just needs to stay in the game a bit more. His ball drop is outstanding and one of the best ive seen.

Bonner is the new Pittard IMO. Plays attacking, risk-taking football out of defence and occasionally bites off more than he can chew. Hopefully he develops into the 2016 version of Pittard rather than the 2018 version.

Not sure if to laugh or cry at the assessment.

Woodcock definitely got one kick in the last on the outer flank. I think he got called Cox one ir two times by the commentators

Cox and drew were the surprises for me.
Cox played a cracker! As did Drew but had high expectations of him already

Frampton i thought played well also and took a nice clunk up forward. I see him as a forward only. and a ruckman pinch hitting at most

Burton sounds a natural born leader!
