We wanted a team that scores. This team isn't too different to Collingwood in that they rotate a lot of mids. We are not blessed with great depth in the key position department. This style compliments or strengths. Looks like Schofield got his wish and has a lot of runners. The extra mids are part of the defense. This team should come af no surprise

We are every chance to win this. Entirely up to our midfield. They get on top, we win. We are good enough to score big scores.

Playing 4 rookies and a couple of new faces I'm not placing unreal expections on the outcome. Will happily take the +25 line though.

We have the Geelong and Hawthorn kids and veterans list profile sans the multiple premiership dynasties that led to it. Interesting.

Paddy Ryder should be rested for this game. According to the Tiser he has lost weight because he hasn't been able to chew food and his jaw/cheekbone is still sore + he will be restricted by the helmet. It's a long season ...

The 100-150 range has the fewest players.

It is a long season, you're right. But every win counts and tomorrows game is still worth 4 points, 4 points that could be the difference between playing finals, being at home, or in the top 4.

If there is no greater risk of injury then no issues with him playing.

We need another ruckman to support Lycett. Unless Ken gets drunk or concussed he’s not picking Frampton so Ryder plays. He can have next week off against Carlton if we win.

When I attend matches in Melbourne, Essendon go all Harlem Globetrotters, Carlton somehow dominate us with their shitful style while shoving fistfuls of cash in umpires pockets, the roos bend us way past 90, and I shuffle home with tomato sauce, beer and tears of disappointment mingling on the pilling polyester of my 97 issue scarf.

But I can't make it this weekend.

Yeah, that's the problem. I'm very much struggling to see Lycett, Rockliff, Boak, SPP and Drew getting on top of Gawn, Oliver, Brayshaw, Viney, Jones and Petracca. I feel like it'd take a miracle for them just to break even.

Must be the first time ever we are going in as the taller team

I don’t think it’s impossible for those guys to get on top, good signs that Boak and Rockliff are closer to their best then where they were last year and SPP is looking Promising this year and Drew looks capable of playing his role.

We also have Ryder and Gray who can be used as centre square clearance weapons under the new 6-6-6 rules.

This is the one good thing about getting them in Rd 1. It's probably our best chance for the year to get at Melbourne's midfield with a few of their players having limited preparation.

We've got to stick with them early and try get on top as the match draws on.

If it was Rd 4 I'd be thinking we're in for a midfield reaming...we still might be if Melbourne click into gear immediately.

Also, we don't actually have to win the midfield, or even break even as long as we're not completely destroyed there.

The biggest issue will be winning contested ball in our back half to keep the score from their mids down.

Yeah that's been me for over 20 years mate.. hard living here and going for Port. Even our best times in 04 I'd see them live against a north and lose by close to 100 points. Working this weekend though so won't be going but heading to Adelaide next week VS Carlton. My luck we'll beat Melbourne and lose to Carlton. My last 2 games I attended in Adelaide was against West coast twice and the after the siren head****..

We need Ryder this week. If he needs resting it can be next week when we'll by up against Lobbe, then back against Martin in Rd 3.

Can I just say, if there is even a skerrick of this attitude towards next week's game permeating through the playing/coaching group then we are doomed. We are nowhere near good enough to assume wins against any opposition, especially a hungry young opponent that has traditionally had the better of us.

Mate, we must roll the dice once in a while. It is a calculated risk. Which are the games we suffer less losing Ryder?

A calculated risk would be to rest him against teams we have minimal chance of beating. Tomorrow's game springs to mind as does R5 v WCE. I would be going in all guns blazing against the weaker teams because they are our best chances to put wins on the board.

Loser mentality - rest our best players against teams we can't beat anyway
Winner mentality - rest our best players against teams we will crush anyway

Reality mentality - we aren't good enough to assume we'll beat anyone.

For the record, I wouldn't rest Ryder against anyone. He's a professional footballer, he can play a game of football once a week.
