This thread is becoming increasingly popular, and to keep some sort of order, we will have some….

Rules of engagement:

1. Bring valid news or links to Twitter posts from notable sources. Don’t post screenshots or “some bloke just said on SEN” or what some “trade whisperer” has posted on a Facebook page.

2. Ignore what other team boards are putting up as trade offers. Don’t quote or bring them here either.

3. Don’t post “buckle up” for the lols.

4. If you can’t say anything nice about Worpel or CJ, don’t say anything at all. The continued slaps and backhanders are just going to be deleted.

In all honesty, there should be no free agency compensation at all. It’s a ridiculous system.

If a player qualifies and has decided to leave and your club can’t convince them to stay, they should just move with no compensation.

It comprises the draft and there’s never going to be a fair system. So just make it nothing and be done with it.
This would be better than having the inconsistency we have right now.

There has to be compensation - bottom clubs would get raided endlessly and never have a chance to climb the ladder otherwise. And frankly we need the bottom clubs to continue developing players for us :p

Hawks are just a little unlucky;
  1. Geelong Football Club are no where near as completely bat shit crazy as the Saints - the Silvagni compensation is directly related to a stupid contract.
  2. Hawthorn finished 4th - so compensation gets bumped (although band 4 this is not exactly correct but band 3 would be essentially the same).
It is what it is - move on.

If Flanders takes the Dees deal then maybe we can do Frenchie and Carlton’s 2nd Round for Saints 7. If we then offload Serong and CJ for picks in the 30’s or 40’s we can bundle those with the Worps compo to Bris for the End of R1 for more points to them.
We can then offer Ess and GC picks 7,8, End Of R1 Bris and our F1 for Merrett and Humphrey

This gets suggested plenty & agree the 'formula' is a mess but I dont think you can have bottom teams not get compensated for losing one of their few good players.

Maybe top 8 teams aren't eligible for compensation or soemthing like that

I can’t be the only one that would be comfortable with that?

I really like Frenchy, but Humphrey instantly improves our team.
The one thing that bugs me about Frenchy and some of our other players is that he looks at a stoppage and tries to weave a path in and out. Now that works for some, and with time may work for him like it does pendlebury, daicos, rioli types.

But one thing that Buckley said when talking about Dangerfield in the prelim and how that style always stands up in finals "he takes the straight line" This is what Newcombe did, and Worpel used to do. Hodge, Lewis, Sewell did this. Bont, Petracca, Dusty.

You see the ball and go straight at it, and move through the contest not in and out of it.

From what i've seen Humphrey is that type of player too, takes the straight line to the ball and holds his line.

You need both type of players, but in finals the more guys going direct at the ball with power the more you get it going your way.

It will all balance out eventually. It's incumbent on AFL clubs to utilise other avenues like drafting and development to become a better club so that they're more attractive to FAs.

Bottom teams are shit because they're shit. Like hell they're shit now even with compo.

I’d back us in over Collingwood who are on the way down, Melbourne who are rebuilding and Carlton who are cooked to turn to his head.

Big question is how we get the deal done in conjunction with the Merrett deal… ease of getting the trade done puts Melbourne in the box seat you’d think…

The only players of ours GCS would want we would never be willing to let go. They simply dont need mid-level players. They get 3 top young players every year, of which one will be a star, one will be good, and one will be okay.

The only way we get our justice is if we are bottom 4 for a few years. They will take an opportunity to screw the successful teams.

This is the end of the 2nd round #39. Will probably drift to 45 by the time all the FS and academy picks go through. What would Worpel be worth on the open market? Probably a top 10 pick i would guess. This is another reason we should be looking seriously at trading Lewis for a mid first rounder this season rather than losing him for pick 65 compensation next season as a FA.

No offence to Worps, but he is not worth a top 10 pick - remove thy beer goggles my friend :)

He is a handy role player, good in the coalface and good pressure - but he has not been elite in any key areas as of this season. He has hit elite clearance work in some previous seasons, but he complements a midfield rather than makes one (like say a Butters). He can hit some good end product into the F50, but that can also wane a little bit - his last season was better IMO.

I hate quantifying this stuff as I love Worps and he's exactly what you want from a good clubman - zero fuss, hard worker and relatively consistent & when he's on, he can really take charge. But he's real value is what clubs are willing to pay for him, and it just doesn't see like there was a huge amount of demand or he was sold on Geelong from the outset, so what we can get for him was limited.

This window, Key Positions are in demand, whereas experienced 2nd/3rd inside mids are popping up everywhere like Clarry, Steele, etc.
