Player Watch #19: Josh Schache

Or else wouldn't you just hire a heap of coaches for the women's and have them work with the men through September and stuff
Quick google came up with very little info surrounding the soft cap in the women's game. But it wouldn't surprise me if the AFL had left a giant loophole like that open.

At least one of those guys will be paid out end of year. Would be horrific list management to kill Jefferson’s development next year.

No contracted player is getting paid out $550k not to play footy for us in 2024. People need to start re-wiring their brain when that thought pops into their noggin. 🧠🔧

Considering how s**t he was this year if it's a free list spot you may aswell, why pay him 550 to be a s**t VFL player when you could just open a spot.

He has 5 months to get his body right and go again. Injuries happen.

He had the agility of the Titanic 6 years ago. Now he's Just an incompetent tall who can't get seperation for the only thing he does well.

When was the last time the club just handed a player a cheque for 550k in October and said “enjoy your life, no need to rock up at The Tan in December.”

When was the last time we had a completely cooked and useless player on the list on high money?

He's played 39 games in 3 years
Averaged less than 2 goals a game, less than 1 contested mark a game and less than 2 marks inside 50 a game

Career lows for all this year. He's not a bloke who can re invent his role like Melk, if he can't get separation and get on the lead he's complete useless.

It doesn’t work that way.

It would be something like “If you agree to retire you won’t have to do a preseason or anything next year, and we will pay you half of what you would’ve earned.”.

The pay out both saves money and opens up a list spot for Melbourne, and Brown gets paid a very decent amount of money for doing nothing.

He’s not Wayne Carey but when fit he’s a better key forward option than Schache.

Not if he's body keeps getting worse. 3 years ago yeah. Even at the start of this year I said he looked crap when he kicked 7 the first 2 rounds because he was moving horribly and got lucky with some crumbing goals. He's looked the same ever since just physically not up to it anymore

Righto. Well let’s see what the FD say in a few weeks. Happy to eat humble pie but I reckon he sees out his deal.

He probably will because we hang on to everyone too long but he's completely wrung out. Don't see any value at all having him stand in Jefferson's way at VFL level next year.

What's the point? If there was ever a time he would get a game as a depth player surely it was weeks ago when all of Brown, TMac & Petty were unavailable. Instead we tried Grundy again on the back of poor VFL form and no prior experience as an AFL forward.

Does it look like Brown or TMac (or both) will give up decent money and retire? Why else would we sign up someone who is clearly at the bottom of the pecking order in the clubs eyes?

Coz hes proven he can stay fit. Unlike Brown and TMac. A wise coach once said, your most important ability is availability. I highly doubt we re-sign him if they aren't missing 3/4's of the season.

Ben Brown thread 👉

Pointless re-signing. Would not trouble the better defenders in A grade ammos.

Being called out “Pick 2” in a draft grants you special un-earned magical powers.

Sure but we've not even used him when those 2 + Petty were unavailable so I'm not sure when he will ever be used, unless there's impending retirements.

Diesel? Tough and grunty and dirty. Surely that’s a satirical nickname… Don’t mind the re-sign though. At least you know he’s fit, shows up on time and doesn’t s**t in Chaplin’s breakfast.

Why the handwringing around Schache? Can play all three key positions at a passable level, and clearly doesn't mind being a backup. You can go punt on a dominant guy at VFL level like Fergus Greene at the Hawks, but there's no guarantee they'll do anything.

We are also a good chance of all, or about 3/4, of the following moving on:

Harmes
Grundy
Hibberd
Melksham
Tomlinson
Jordon
McDonald
Dunstan
Smith
Brown

That's a lot of list spots to fill for a club trying to extend their window. It can't all be kids, even if we have about 6 picks in the first 2 rounds.
