2014 Draft Prospect Thread

Well with Nationals Starting I think we can start talking about the Draft Prospects.

We look about 85%-90% sure we will commit to Moore but what about other Prospects.

My Thoughts:

  • I like the look to Lamb from Stingrays. Tall/Medium Forward who has X-Factor
  • Marchbank put his name in Lights on Sunday by beating Wright and Moore to top 5 Prospects

Marchbank has strong hands & was very good at forcing his opponent under the ball & then marking effortlessly on Sunday. As you said Dave, did very well against highly rated opponents.

Need to get someone who can kick the ball, Garrett Mcdonagh is one of the best kicks of the footy I have seen, played in the Vic Metro 2's on the weekend I have no clue how he went but he would be a late pick or rookie prospect another one is Kyle Langford played mainly as a key forward but would likely become a mid as I am not sure weather he will grow to become a key forward at AFL level, I think it is more likely he will be a half forward or wing

Well If he is playing in the Vic Metro’s 2nd he be late 2nd round at Best

I'm watching the key forwards first to see if there are any other opportunities.

Wright, Durdin, McCartin and Goddard likely all go top 5 but I'm also looking beyond that.

Hammelmann (QLD), Keitel (WA), Watchman (SA), Cripps (WA) are others I'm watching and would consider in the second round if they really dominate the second half of the season and perform well over the coming weeks.

Darcy Cameron (WA) and Mark Kovacevic (VIC) as ruckmen I'm watching with interest. I'd also like to take on of the Americans. Mason Cox specifically at 211cm with his running ability if without question worth a shot as a category two rookie.

As an overager Nathan Drummond has captured my attention with his incredible explosive pace, production, versatility to play on the ball or down back and also his ability on the ball reading the ruck taps, winning his own ball, tackling and doing all the hard stuff.

Billy Evans as a tall, strong bodied midfielder I'm watching with interest as a later round draft selection.

Nakia Cockatoo I like as a super talented utility with his versatility, footskills, pace, agility and the time he has with ball in hand as a tallish type. His form as an injured player just won't be as exposed and we're not seeing him through the u18 champs so he'll relatively be harder to evaluate but none the less an intriguing prospect late draft.

I'll have some other names later in the season and perhaps an outside linebreaker or crumber I like but for now yet to find that guy who offers that right mix of value and quality you'd look at in a late/rookie pick which is all I'd be willing to spend on either of these types with these types often available late draft and of much the same quality as those taken earlier on as we've proven can be said of general defenders.

Any Update on him as he was Suppose to be Trying out at the Club Last week

I say KPP is the Biggest Need we have at the Moment as we don’t haves much behind the Players in the AFL Side.

So if we don’t have a Top 5 Pick to Potentially get 1 of those would you be happy just to take Moore then?

We shouldn't have anything close to a top 5 pick as our first rounder - we should only get that if we trade, in which case we would still be able to get Moore with whatever other pick we have.

Yeah he would be but he fills a need off ours I have not seen him play for along while but his kicking has always stood out. I think the last time I saw him play was when he was about 15 or 16 he played in the reserves Grand Final for West Preston and he was the stand out player on the day and got best on.

Knight I don't think we need to target another young ruck, maybe a mid age back up like Wood is at the blues but that is it. Saying that Cox would be more a project player and I wouldn't mind seeing that but I wouldn't target a ruck in the draft. With tall forwards I would love the romance of us getting Sam Weideman how do you see his development tracking? If he is good enough he may be able to do a Wingard to get to us.

There is 2 Games Difference between the Teams in the Bottom 5 to us.

I doubt we would fall that far back but still with a Youngish Side things can still happen.

I see us at worst having Pick 7 or 8

i think we should draft a small , fast crumbing fwd. Like Krakour but quicker.

I agree. We miss that Type. You can get those later in the Draft as the Small Players don’t go Early

Have you noticed any kids with elite kicking skills Dave?

The fact he comes from a soccer background is heartening after seeing how Keeffe kicks a football.

I'm not so fussed about what type of ruckman we take whether it be a veteran, a mid career type or someone younger.

I'd definitely like to take an international - say Mason Cox with his height so unique and some intriguing athleticism.

With veterans it's difficult to see many accepting a spot on a rookie list and whether Mark Seaby as an example from WA would be interested to be what Ben Hudson has been these past couple of years I wouldn't be able to say with confidence.

Of the mid career types there just aren't any appropriate options or anyone obvious who can play to an appropriate depth standard at AFL level unless a club delists someone at seasons end and we decide their state league form was better than that of the other options available.

Understanding how hard it will be to find someone worth even a list place as depth from these two categories it brings the younger types into the frame despite the young ages of Grundy and Witts. Darcy Cameron as an example is playing state league footy and player well as an overager. He's not going to get taken early draft and probably can be had as a rookie as someone overlooked last year.

The options are lean though. That's why Ben Hudson while he's still playing really good footy at VFL level is going around again this year.

I still think Hudson is a chance to play on next season, I can see your point but if we load up on to meany young rucks as I don't think it would be good for their development and they would leave to go to another club. Also I think we need to focus on other areas of our side before we need to add players to other areas of our side first.

He is a dud saw him play when we played them offered North nothing

Well he would only be a Back Up for a Short Term and I think we could do worse. Be better then Wood. Seen him play well at times for North and Werribe

Watching Hudson play so well in the VFL every week I'd have no problem bringing him back. It's an outcome I'd be very happy with.

You just have to have plans in place for the situation he doesn't want to play on a further season. He's 35 now, 36 next season. Not many guys at that age want to keep going around, whether it's mind or body. If he can get up for another year and continue to do what he's doing then that keeps that need at bay for another year.
