Is there anything from stopping clubs from putting in unrealistic bids just to screw us? Knowing full well we will take Mills no matter what?

No the only thing stopping them is we may not match the bid

The club will go for him but they won't use up 2 first round picks for him. If Carlton, Brisbane or GCS want to take him at 1, 2 or 3 then I say let them. We'll use the draft picks to trade. There's also the wonderful go-home factor that will no doubt screw the bottom teams up in 2 years time anyway. Brisbane I feel for, but I have absolutely no sympathy for Carlton.

Are you guys insane? With compensation picks, our likely first is going to be about 19. Who gives a **** if we only get mills and pick 97 and 98? I'd rather that than pick 19, pick 42 (more end of first round/second round compo picks) and something else. With the picks we have it's better to be sure of a gun, than take a risk that a pick in the late teens will work out.

Mills will be our best bet, even if he gets bid at 1.

Draft night will be a big test of the VFL and their new points rules. Vexatious bidding is a real danger to the fabric of what they have designed. The system gives any club the ability to hurt another club by bidding high for an academy or FS just to make the "owning" club pay overs. That should not be allowed to happen but this is the VFL and we know their recent attitude to non Victorian clubs.

Everyone, and I mean everyone is very clear on who the top two picks are, Weitering and Schache, there is no disputing that. Standout KP players are rare, gun midfielders are common in comparison.

So there shouldn't be any way that picks 1 or 2 will be bid on Mills, who hasn't really been sighted all year due to injury and that must hurt his rating. Gun KP defender Jake Lever slipped from a top three prospect in the 2014 ND to Adelaide at pick 14 after missing last year due to an ACL. He's proved this year in his first year that he is top three quality, that's how an injury ravaged year can slip you down the rankings. Adelaide got a bargain.

This year after Weitering and Schache at 1 and 2, pick 3 onwards is much more fluid. We couldn't complain if Mills is bid on at pick 3 because he is apparently a gun, but in reality he shouldn't be at 3 somewhere like 5 onwards is where he should probably be given the injury ravaged year.

We can only hope that fair play rules and if either of the clubs with picks 1 and 2 bids on Mills, the whole world will know it's vexatious. As I've said before, this years trade period and ND will be an exciting ride. Now just need the VFL to lift our trade ban!

Lots of quality movement already in the FA/Trade market this year. I would assume lots of teams will be needing high picks to pull off their wish lists? Hopefully this means most teams will have bigger issues to worry about than making the Swans pay overs for Academy kids.

Moreso at the very least next years first rd draft pick and bird. Maybe throw in a towers or a brandon jack.

I'd be very hesitant to give up our first pick in a strong draft. I'd much prefer to give up a second rounder and a player such as Bird who would slot into any teams first 21 (maybe not Hawthorn). There won't be 17 clubs interested in him. He'll be too big a risk or too much trouble for most. It will also need to be a club that he would be happy to go to. I would think that he wouldn't want to head back home where there are lots of bad influences.

Was in the NEAFL Team of the Year this season.

Any NEAFL watchers, is he someone we should look at for picking up cheap?

Non-academy clubs will increasingly make those similar to them on the trade table overpay for academy selections until someone gets burned badly.

Having said that if he drops to pick 30, I think we should take him. Pick for talent trade for position.

He isn't a ruckman. You're thinking of Tom Downie from GWS. Tyrone is 181cm tall and a small forward/mid.

Melksham could be a good copy. Not a world beater but caoabke of playing forward, middle and half back if required. Would be a good utility to cover any injuries

I don't think there is any doubt we take him. so long as our first pick is above ten and we get a guaranteed top 5 draft player you will take them. its not like a situation where its judd, hodge or ball. its mills or two blokes rated behind 20-40 other players.

The difficulty will develop if this is the case every season. in that instance we will end up with a hollowed out side - elite players and rookie listed players. in time the question will actually become can the academy provide enough players rather than one-two elite players. we actually need the academy to be producing those player that are 195cm plus to play as kpp but 3 or so per season.

No-one in our shoes will call the bluff. It will only be called where you rate three-four players very highly and your bid is only three-four behind, or where you know something else about the player (i.e. degenerative knee condition and won't play fifty games)

In every other instance a club will commit to the player that they rate 15 spots above their pick
