People keep saying Adelaide will split their pick.

With who? Melbourne had to trade into the first round by giving up next years pick because no one wanted to give up what they thought 3 was worth.

Josh Schoenfield was delisted yesterday to be re-rookied. (if available) He had a contract till 2020.

GOLD Coast has re-signed youngsters Jesse Joyce and Josh Schoenfeld, with the pair excited by a new era under coach Stuart Dew.
The duo have extended their contracts until the end of the 2020 season.

Josh Schoenfeld will also be delisted, but the club has committed to picking him up in the 2019 NAB AFL Rookie Draft.
Geelong drafted oscar brownless last year. (main list) De-listed today with a second year of his standard contract remaining. Will be re-rookied if available.
Contracted Hugh Dixon and tom north de-listed by freo to be re-rookied! (don't mind Dixon)
Found one that was just extended this year yet? These are players getting their contracts bought out.

If we want him its with pick 12. He may be who we started targeting after Melbourne got a pick before us for Weightman.

If Bulldogs are into him, they have pick 13 then 53, so we would have to use 12. Depending on pick movement up to and on the night.

**** me if we go after rivers with our first pick I’ll die

“He’ll be a mid at the next level” absolutely smacks of Andrew Moore.
Maybe he will be something, but he’s a fair risk.
If we got him at 18 I’ll be livid, mostly because of what we gave up to get a project player but I’ll get over it and hope he makes it.
Pick 12 would shake the remaining bit of hope in port Adelaide I have left.

Would you rather Rivers or Sharp at #18 ??

Would you rather Rivers or Sharp at #18 ??

thats a tough one.
Probably sharp (I could change my mind tomorrow) but you’ve probably named 2 players that make me nervous with high picks.
Sharp will be an afl footballer, but he will almost certainly be an unaccountable running hbf who will be like 40th - 80th best at his position in the afl.

I would also not recommend drafting sharp unless we’re committed to trading bonner ASAP. Having both on the list would be useless.
Sharps probably a better interceptor than bonner and slightly better than bonner all round on the defensive side, so it wouldn’t be such a bad swap except paying 18 for one and trading one out for a pick 40-50 which is likely what we would get would be bad business. There shouldn’t be that big a bridge between their worth but there is.

rivers at 18 maybe isn’t that bad considering who may be left, but he’s definitely a high risk pick I think. We would absolutely want to nail our first pick. it’s just what we gave up to get that pick to see it used on such a risky prospect that would disappoint me.

sharp and rivers are the prospects I would want to be contemplating at our 2nd round pick.

I would actually love rivers at pick 29. Taking a flyer on a 189cm utility who could be a mid after drafting 2 genuine players first would be fine in that context.

What are the draft watchers' thoughts on Miles Bergman? I've been super impressed by him every time I've seen him talk and his combine results but havent caught any game footage of him in action.

Is being talked up as in the mix around 10-20 so would be around the mark for our picks I'd think.

I'm praying that we select Pickett at some stage.

As unpopular as it is on here, Id select pickett ahead of mead. He has more upside, if his game comes together at the level he is going to be devastating something that we desperately need, skill with aggression.

Ive watched them both since under 14 level. One is a solid player and the other is a game changer.

Happy for him to be one that slides to another club haven't seen that much of him compared to some others though

What's the feeling with our first pick this year?

I have read a tone of articles and I reckon each news outlet/draft expert has a different view.

I'd be devo.

I'd rather he go somewhere else then come home to us.

From what I have read pick 4 could be a bit early for him but perhaps Adelaide are spooked with missing the top end of SA talent from last year that they will make sure they land him.

The problem at the moment is that most of the top end SA talent looks more likely to go around 10 ish.

I am with you. Not that I am at your level of viewing them play. For me, Mead is the bread, while Pickett is the gourmet filling! You need both to make a meal, so I really hope we get both of them. Pickett's numbers aren't fantastic, but put him into an AFL system, & he will thrive!

I think both Mead and Pickett are in the same boat. Both could be good, both could be in and out of the system in 2 years without playing a game. Neither would surprise me.

I think Picketts got further to go to get up to the standard required. He's all butter, no bread at the moment.

Well the good new is that we are in the "sweet spot":tonguewink:

SANFL talent manager Brenton Phillips believes the AFL draft has a “sweet spot

...............

Phillips argues that those players who get picked in the middle of the first round, the “sweet spot’’ as he calls it, have the ideal scenario because their clubs are “on the move’’ but have holes that need immediate filling by their top draft choices. “This is just my theory but I think it stands up,’’ he said. “If you get picked from one to six as a player you are in a difficult window because you obviously are a very good footballer, there is no question about that.

“But unfortunately sometimes you go to a club that is struggling to win games and it’s a hard game to play when you go to an environment where, one, the team is struggling to win, and, two, the players around you aren’t at the same level as the top echelon clubs. If you go from pick seven to 12, to me that is your sweet spot, because those clubs are on the move somewhere, they are going, so you are going into an environment that can lend you to jumping in and playing a role, like (AFL Rising Star runner-up) Connor Rozee did for Port Adelaide this year.

“He played the role that they wanted him to play and he played it very well because he’s a very talented footballer, and away he goes. In contrast, (fellow South Australian) Jack Lukosius goes to Gold Coast at pick two, they are trying to find a spot for him, moving him all over the place, and they are struggling to win, so his numbers aren’t going to look as good.

“At the other end of the spectrum, if you go in that 13 to 18 bracket, you are usually going to a side that is hard to break into.’’

.......

Macca, from what I have seen .... and I certainly havent seen as much as you .... Pickett has some serious holes, for want of a better word, in his game. But his weapons have the potential to be super elite IMO. Unless he rounds out as a player, like you say, he will likely be brushed aside and fail. I was very interested in Phillip's explanation of his patchy form, in that he was unsettled by being back and forth between the various systems. Some young lads can cope with that, but others cant. Once he settles into an AFL squad, and comes under an elite system, we could see the real player emerge.

He will be a very interesting player to watch, to see how he develops.

I think he showed some handy stuff of substance at SANFL U18s level
Especially early in the year
