Hewitt was the last ranked midfielder in the senior side so much so the club resorted to playing him in defence when all our midfielders were available. You don’t sign a player like that for the amount of money he was offered for 4 years and don’t expect to lose other more important players as a result. 2 years is the most you can stretch it to without it hurting and as he was a free agent that decision was taken out of our hands by Carlton.

But we get it you would rather we tied up a significant amount of our salary cap in our last ranked midfielder in the senior side above all else.
That's a particular interpretation. Another was that Fox was injured, Cunners hadn't cemented himself in defence and the club thought Hewett was versatile enough to play a lockdown role in D50.

I am a Hewett fan too and I don't understand it all either. We have toomany mids and let him go and get in 4 mids. Go figure?

We have no choice but to let it go as the good folk of Bigfooty don't deserve to be on the receiving end of our frustration (well in my case - you have been quite civil.)

Not drafting a KPD does make me wonder if Armatey might be “Tommy Macked” and shifted back.

He has all the attributes.

We’ll have a plan. Of that I’m sure.

Reid in the short term too.

There are a LOT of key position players next year

You mean to say “5th in the 2020 Best and Fairest” Harry Cunningham hadn’t cemented himself in defence. Right
My recollection was that he wasn't full time there in 2020. But when Hewett got 2nd in 2019, he was full time mid, so two can play at that.

Anyway, I'm done. People can post subjective stuff as fact if they want, or switch between 'too many mids' and 'not enough' as much as they want.

I could see Florent going into defence if required.
He is pretty useful back there …

Agree with this. Last season on a few occasions at halfback he had the McVeigh like feign with ball in hand out front to wrong foot opponents. Has enough pace to break lines off halfback I feel. Tough enough now to defend well too. Him moving there gives us a better balance for mine.

Personal preferences aside, I'm pretty excited to watch Sheldrick pile-driving through the opposition, Corey Warner make a wing spot his own, and Roberts give us another avenue to goal. Hopefully the latter makes many Crows fans weep in the coming years (until tonight he was one of them) and we get some measure of justice for the Dawson "trade".

Reckon we'll be pretty competitive at VFL level next year.

Parker
Mills
Heeney
Rowbottom
Florent
Warner
Gulden
Campbell
Sheldrick
Roberts
Warner

They will be our mids after next year assuming JPK goes. Can't play all of them.
And the bottom 3 won't be

Not directed at you specifically but do people really expect draftees outside of the top 5 or maybe top 10 to play round 1 next year and be best 22? Gulden was an exception to the rule because if he was 5cm taller he would have been a top 5 pick. If we are playing Sheldrick at a CBA in round 1 next year either we have a bunch of injuries or the kid is a Judd like freak

A few of those will play in other positions. Parker forward for one.

I am not expecting any of them to play much if at all next year.

I referred explicitly to beyond next year (hence not including JPK.)

I would be surprised if the 3 of them combined play 30 games by the end of 2023 if we stay fully fit

That would be the hope then. That we have some of those players - the versatile ones, like Heeney, Gulden, Campbell - earmarked for other roles. Otherwise some of those players will not be in the 22.
