2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

2025 KEY DATES
Free Agency Period:
Friday, October 3rd - Friday, October 10th
Trade Period: Monday, October 6th - Wednesday, October 15th
AFL Draft: Wednesday, November 19th - Thursday, November 20th

I’d back us in to find one at that number.
Really, so effectively you're saying nothing much outside the top dozen or so kids in a national draft are worth having? Given that there's around 750 listed AFL players I would highly doubt that...........

Apologies to all on this, especially Saintos........used the wrong quote ahead of my post, was meant to be the post that Saintos quoted and was replying to......

Flew out on Monday to London and been a very long work week..............not at my sharpest......

This talk about Geelong and system I keep saying it our strength in the last 10 years has been value picks.

Sinclair
Wilkie
Marshal
Steele

Unfortunately we can’t rort the system or been able to bring in
Danger
Cameron.

Agree their development has been streets ahead. Also the stability of Chris Scott has been admirable.

Don't know if it's been said but I don't think we would get much out of Geelong for Marshall TBH.

They don't need him. They only need a stop gap for a few years if Toby Conway needs some more time.

They'd be better off grabbing a solid B+ option like Ladhams or Soldo for a late pick.

The other thing forgotten is Wilkie signed a 4 year deal at $750k odd before he was worth that and was happy to take it along with the security of 4 years. I am not sure it’s fair to take that security then be restless when you surprise everyone, even yourself, and become a a top end player and ask for a revision.

Can the club ask Steele of McCrae for a revision of their wage to match performance. What about Ro and Henry this

Very interesting article by Wilson in the Age today about the strategy adopted by the Saints and it is exactly what has been discussed here.
1.Put in place over a year ago
2. Supporter groups saw Saints as 'meek'. I remember saying similar in the after season review the Saints sens members, I obviously wasn't alone.
3. Deliberate FU to other clubs over FS and NGA. Effect is rule changes in 26
4. Confirmed that NWM would not have been traded and would have ended in the PSD going to WCE.
5. Lyon decided in August to go after JSOS, and got Allen on to it.
6 The big one is her affirmation that we only paid 83% of the SC this year. And also money for Billings and Crouch
So my calculations for excess SC
2 X 5% Savings on SC = 1.83 million
17% in Savings in 25. = 3.11 million

A warchest of nearly 5 million.
Unknowns and estimates
Billings and Crouch = 500k?
All contracts have no future SC increases built in, estimates vary but likely 1.5 to 2 million increase.
After paying 95% of the cap a club can pay 105% the following year, not sure if this is part of the current calculations but a potential 915k extra.
So what we can confidently say is Saints had a minimum 5 million to spend in trade period 2025.
If the 105% rule is invoked this year, that's 5.9 million.
Then going take off Billings and Crouch, we could have had up to 6.5 million over the cap to spend in 2025.
Going forward, any increase of SC has not been factored in to contracts.
Figures have a little bit of rigour as we know the SC total, the years we saved SC, the 105 % rule on SC spend, and Wilson has mentioned a number of times 83 to 85% spend on SC in 2025.
So in future you can just laugh at idiot oppo supporters when they talk about SC, the figures, based on known facts ( except Caro's figure of course, that can't be corroborated) are all above.
As for the strategy, it is bold and decisive, has rattled the AFL, oppo clubs and coaches as can be seen by the petulant salty offer by the Western nepo babies towards a contracted and happy Wilkie.

About time this club grew some balls. I say bravo. You have got me back as a 11 game member with a reserved seat for next season.
Me 2😊

They'll want him. They're chasing flags. Getting close but no cigar as often as they do would frustrate them. If they think Ro can help get them a flag or two they'll want him.

We’re going to want to get our money’s worth out of Ro one way or another as we’ve probably paid him half of his next two years wages in advance.

So if he stays we’ve got a gun player who’s on maybe even less than the average AFL wage, so they’d better offer us a lot to give up such a player.

A genuine Josh Dunkley clone.

In preseason I said Josh P Kennedy, still think he's as close to a comparison as you can get.

Agree ,would chase Jacob Blight over Leek.

Would also be a rookie on minimum chips.

3 or 4 years out of Marshall is probably exactly what Geelong need whilst Cameron and Danger are still around.

If we agree to trade him I hope it’s for an established player with a younger age profile. Don’t see the appeal in draft picks in this draft and future picks aren’t helping us up the ladder over the next two years.

I think it was Joffaboy who mentioned we can't claim we have Ryan until its done and I couldn't agree more.

Remember last year we had Soldo nominate us and we didn't go through with it based on unreasonable trade requests.

I get the sense that Ryan isn't the type who would happily go back to WC and give his all once he has checked out. I've warmed to getting him, but reckon we'll play hardball and be completely fine to walk away if WC ask too much.

It would depend on what comes of those draft picks, with the assumption they could be used on one of our trade targets. Apart from SDK, who admittedly didn't look like a star last night, I can't see many Bayside kids on that list who I'd want.

Interestingly, his main opponent was subbed off today (Dear), so I wonder if that was because of Aleer doing a good job, or just him being off the boil.
He seemed to have Dear checked. Still think he was the least of GWS troubles today, he just looked raw af.
Who were GWS missing in the backline today, because if he is a first back in a top eight team, what is the club seeing that we aren't?
Or has JSOS thrown a curve ball?

I’m with Gringo here. He is a pretty big POD in a very vanilla side. Even if he only manages his. Customary 12 disposals and a goal. I’m pretty confident in saying he probably creates 2-3 more a game aswell.

As a fan. I’d also go just to watch him jump on someone’s head aswell
Between Ryan, Mitchito, Coops, The flying Viking and Collard, our games certainly won't be dull. Quite a few there that don't mind jumping on heads!!

Mystery Mid???????
Its Happening Ron Paul GIF

He's playing in a final!
Exactly.
No one checks out in a final.
And especially if he’s not a definite trade yet.
And if Ross has gone to watch him, means he’s not definite yet.

Ya know, (no you don’t, why would you, but…) but fair enough.

Just look at Rhyce Stanley!
Without his hammy, he would be picked in their starting 22!

Can you believe it??

Can you believe it fellow Sainters!!

At 34, hamstrung, Rhyce Stanley, mediocre discard, would still be starting 22 in a final for the most successfully consistent finals team in decades- and straight from the most successful coach in the era. (Our distaste for the Scott boys aside)

But think about that!
Think about what that means!

Especially when trades and running rucks are concerned.

We picked up Boyd! I thought I was seeing the video in slo- motion! (Round one) no disrespect intended.

And Kemp, and Xerri ( that one was a mistake though in hindsight)
