And seriously, who cares whether the ball feathered the goal post when it went through?
It’s not like a caught behind in test cricket?
The other codes (soccer and rugby) don’t give a stuff whether the ball touches the goal post - for sensible and logical reasons. It’s simply impossible to tell and shouldn’t matter. If it goes through as a goal, even if it ricochets, then it shouldn’t matter. Just call it a goal rather than waste 2 minutes trying to detect the impossible.

Just saw a classic example of where the umpires rarely play holding the ball against Geelong.
Ablett caught cold - holding the ball with one arm held. 15,000 nanosecond later Ablett - still holding the ball - looks at the umpire “OK if you’re not going to pay the free kick I’ll see if I can dispose it”. And he eventually does and it’s play on.
Every other non-Geelong player in the history of AFL would have been penalised.
