News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

Not if he turns in a crappy draft year.
No one wants to take chances with a first round pick.

Isnt Zeke Uwland still going to be bid on very high? He barely played this year and he's maybe gone from pick 1 to 3 or something. Even if he has a shocking year, Walker will be bid on early, Carlton will match regardless, so that team wont be taking a risk of Carlton not matching.

this seems the fairest result all things considered. Clubs still have access but have to pay through the roof for top end talent.

It's pretty wild though, if Carlton make finals next year and have to trade for a top 5 pick for example, what could you trade? Your better players wont want to go to a bottom 5 team, the bottom 5 teams know the situation well and will make you pay significant overs for a top 5 pick. You cant trade your first as you need that as well to match, and future 1sts are useless cos Tassie are coming in.

yes it would be hard and maybe impossible without letting go of a player. But id rather live with that than let top clubs continue to top up on guns year over year.

This is where the Curnow deal comes into play do they just do it?

Can they also send one of their compensation picks into next year?

I'm looking forward to the discussion on trading players completely flipping. Ridiculously, it's always been, "picks have no value for us this year, because we have x who will be bid on" which should be completely against the whole idea of accessing elite talent.

Now teams will have to actually trade players to get to the top of the draft - you know, how it's SUPPOSED to have always worked

Less than ideal time for Freo for the implementation

Also Port

As far as I'm concerned, Freo will always come out worse over time. The only better time to do it then next year is tomorrow for Freo.

Regardless, I think Robinson drops a bit by next year given speed limitations and the fact the WAFC cant develop talent to save themselves

I have no real issue with this. The benefit of having an academy or father son player should be the access/choice. Not the ability to pick them up with half a dozen rubbish picks.

It’s a shame we will pay through the nose for Walker and to a lesser extent Dean but change has to come at some point. As long as the clubs get adequate notice.

And as we can now trade 2027 picks they need to confirm any further proposed changes and all draft concessions for Tasmania. List management strategy is decided years out.

Fair call really.

Not sure what is going over WA colts. Have not really produced as well as historically.

Sorry man, we don't have cotton on or farm land deals on the side. This was our only way to benefit somehow and the door is shut now anyway. You keep selling your "quiet country lifestyle" story to gullible media while stuffing players with all the side deals. Who are you taking this year anyway, Curnow I heard? I'm sure it'll be on the cheap too again.

"Look over there - bad academy" tactic is working well for you so far so why stop now.

Geelong is not getting curnow if that was the point of your rant.

Rowan Marshall for sure then.
"Country lifestyle calling !"

Rowans parents already live on a large farm near Portland that has nothing to do with Geelong so your point is what?

How do you know what picks you need to match a bid when you dont know when the bid will arrive or how the value of your picks will change on draft night?

You dont but you will know that in reality you need 2 first rounders to match a top 10 bid now which is how it should be as in pick trades thats what it costs to trade for a top 10 pick.

If he's in your NGA academy, you can develop him. Don't have to relay on the WAFC.

It was one advantage rich clubs had. No limit on how much you pump in yo your academy as it's outside the soft cap.

Ah well, waited so long to finally see a NGA / FS hoard on the horizon, and now the AFL changes the rules which will screw us over.

Very difficult to take this comp seriously.

I’m sure that it will change again once one of the golden clubs needs a hand.

Im not sure its the same level of access. Dont Northern state academies get to train with the club and play in their under-age and VFL affiliate.

Unless Robinson moves to Peel, South Fremantle and the state pathway will be in charge for the majority of his development unfortunately.

This perennial ding dong will continue with AFL - wait until some club mortgage their future for a draftee and he had to abandon footy for whatever reason - then AFL will be like, oh no, we stuffed up this process for one club and we need to peel it back again to find equilibrium. Round n round we go.
You mean someone like Paddy McCartin? That's the luck of the draw of the draft and isn't unique to an academy or F/S selection.

It seems strange to me that you're still allowing for the 10% points discount, but preventing a third points pick to be used. That to me doesn't make much sense - a relaxation on one end, and a tightening on the other. Why not allow teams to use a third pick but make the points discount 0%?

Unless the top 8 and top 4 limitations are reducing the 10% discount to 5% and 0%, which would make more sense.

At least make it like a 5 year period where you're allowed to have a third points pick used.

As it stands it's just Brisbane closing the door behind them after getting 3 top 3 draft picks in 4 years of finishing in the top 4.

When Vic kids do it - they're called "brave"
Waiting for an interstate kid to do it - all hell will break loose haha
1000’s of talented teenagers across the country would do anything just to be drafted, and here we have highly rated, Academy or NGA affiliated kids dictating where they want to go.

Ok you don’t want to leave home or play for another club but you’re in a national draft, fair enough, move aside and we’ll pick a kid that’ll embrace the challenge and do anything to make it.

lol no. Most of the kids are still in school, the senior team and vfl mostly train during the day, when the kids are at school.

Our academy zone is twice the size of the State of Victoria. Unless you live in metro Brisbane, you're not training with the senior team.

Our training base is 30km from the Gabba in Springfield. Annable lives out in Redland Bay, some 50+ kilometers from Springfield.

Any academy kid in the National Academy trains with the team during preseason, just like other National Academy kids also training with AFL teams in their State.

Last preseason the only academy kid to train with the AFL team was Annable. All the other academy kids trained with the academy program in academy hubs, or with their QAFL team.

When the actual season starts, the academy teams are playing practice games against the other Northern Academy teams, before the actual Academy Series and CTL games start. At the same time the National Academy is playing it's games against VFL teams.

Kids who don't make the Allies team, that's their academy season done. They go back to their QAFL team.

Then the season moves in to the National representative period, so all the top kids are involved in that. After the Champs are finished, then likely draftable kids play with the VFL team. This year only Annable, Prindable and Waller from the draft age kids played with the VFL team in the later stages of the competition. From the underage kids, each of Owen, Murray and Hodge played one game with the VFL team.

I imagine those three kids will spend preseason training with the senior team.

The kids don't dictate where they go, the AFL does. To the team that payed for their development or the team of their father. You had as many father son kids in your team on Saturday as we did. Probably have as many Oakleigh kids on your list as we have academy kids

What do you believe northern clubs have been doing for more than a decade?

Lions rated Ed Richards higher than Zac Bailey, but drew a line through his name because he didn't want to leave Vic. Neither did Bailey Smith. Tanner Bruhn cried when he was drafted to GWS. Perkins, Hobbs, Tsatas, (basically most of the first round kids Essendon have drafted in the last 5 years), Sheezel, Wardlaw, Watson. Happens every year with highly rated Vic kids. All tell recruiters they don't want to leave Vic.

Is Robinson an NGA? This is the problem with NGAs. It’s freos responsibility to fund and develop these guys. All these clubs wanted access but invest nothing to develop the talent.

It’s ludicrous.

Didn't Cochrane only recently find out he has an indigenous back ground? No offence but if that's the case you don't even deserve him.
