I hear you mate. Too many people on here are playing the man. Even taking Carlton out of it (just to appease those that can't see past that) it was only a week ago that the GWS beat the reigning premier.

The AFL have created a monster. Yes - the clubs collectively signed off on it but Vlad didn't exactly take too kindly to any dissent so that's pretty understandable.

After artificially propping up Brisbane & Sydney for more than a decade, we now have the GWS & Gold Coast with their special arrangements. For how long ... well Sydney & Brisbane still can't sustain themselves when their performances drop so I'll say conservatively they'll need at least 25 more years of AFL support.

No wonder interest in the heartland of Victoria is declining at a rate and for many it's a loss of hope, a loss of fairness & equality and nothing to do with the price of the pies & chips.

Firstly I highly doubt anyone is ever going to give a real shit about the Giants. The Suns most likely the same.

And the fact they need these things is a massive problem. The game didn't even really need expansion, just a useless dick measuring contest involving the A-League and NRL.

Kevin Sheedy made mention of Brisbane's early 00s dominance at the time with 'we've created a monster'. Sure, GWS may dominate for the next 5 years, but in a decade I am convinced they'll be what Brisbane are now. When the money dries up, GWS may be back to being a liability.

The fact they threw money at Folau and Hunt to play was a message to the NRL that they're prepared to fight and win the war of the codes.
Tasmania wanted a team, but the AFL was like 'Nope, Hawthorn is your team'.
Western Sydney never wanted an AFL team, and instead of the AFL saying 'Western Sydney can just support the Swans can't they?', they ran some numbers and bought into a potential market they may one day (at best) have equal share of.

I had to make this thread after hearing some of the tripe David King speaks. "how good is this?", "they have a great amount of talent" etc. No shit you fat campaigner Kingy. Give any team the concessions they've had and we'll see this kind of play.

Is this what we want footy fans? We talk up equality, bring in ridiculous caps on footy department spending and yet here we are with a side in GWS and possibly Gold Coast that will dominate the league up in areas where quite frankly nobody gives a rat toss about football.

Draft concessions, mini drafts etc. What is this? The 1980s? Why don't we bring back zoning and salary cap cheating if we're gonna be like that. And before you have a go at me for going for Carlton, I wasn't aroids back then so have never agreed or barracked for sides that were pumped up by that.

What other sports league has ever manufactured teams like this? I doubt you would find any.

Just need the AFL to keep helping out the Swans while teams like Brisbane, Carlton etc will struggle to be relevant.

It is an absolute farce and get real if you want to enjoy these fake ******* franchises dominate the league.

P.S if you want to talk about what team I follow or if I supported expansion from day one ( I never liked it) head off to the bay.

Port got screwed worse than most clubs by the GWS and GC draft years, and look at them now. Perhaps Carlton should take a look at themselves before they even consider blaming the AFL and the draft for their plight.

Brisbane would have a lot die hard league fans make the trip down, GC and GWS don't have huge supporter bases that would spend the money on a trip down for a Grand Final. Even so most tickets aren't sold to many supporters of the competing clubs anyway so probably wouldn't make a difference.

If i remember rightly it sold out quickly and broncos fans arent the biggest travellers by a long shot. Neither are the storm.

I was just saying GWS could easily have been even stronger, we are probably a bit fortunate that they don't have stronger top-end talent.

My philosophy is that it is too difficult to nail who is going to be an exceptional KPF, dominating in the juniors doesn't translate to AFL level at a rate I would risk a top 10 pick on a KPP or Ruckman. Patton went #1, take him out and push everyone else up and you still have room for Wingard. Plowman went #3, could have been a Macrae or Wines. Boyd went #1, could have been a Bontempelli or Billings.

It is not that I think Patton, Boyd or Plowman are bad players but I think GWS would have been INSANELY strong if you added Wingard, Wines and Bontempelli into the side. I don't really care if you are a few KPP short, KPP normally take years to recruit and develop and most KPP come from much later in the draft.

GWS have very good talent but if they focused on developing the most powerful midfield group then the team would have been a complete nightmare.

Had Carlton done the same thing then they too had an opportunity to be a significantly stronger side than the one that is going around atm.

Yeah nah. Happy with the way we have built.

Shown that they wont be taken for mugs at the trade table and took the hard way of building the club through othing but kids and constant "shittest club ever" comments. Its all coming together now. Players are staying (along with a rumoured few more soon).

If the thread is about inequality, then it is about Carlton (relative to GWS). Your coaches and recruiting staff greatly misjudged the quality of your list and as such mismanaged drafting and signings year after year.

We've been there, so I know how it feels. Cross your fingers that the front office accepts its failures and sets about cultural change and better list management now.

Take out the F/S selections of Cloke and Hawkins (both rated as first round talents at the time) and Tex Walker (NSW scholarship), almost all the best KPFs in the competition have been first round picks. Pavlich, N.Riewoldt, Franklin, Roughead, Schulz, J.Riewoldt, Kennedy. Then of the young brigade, Cameron was rated highly enough to be picked as 17yo, Hogan as a mini-draft pick, and Daniher went top 10 as a F/S.

That's just the forwards too.

You can talk about equality as much as you want, but until we have a realistic vision at the top - it is pointless.
Vlad's vision was flawed, the job got handed to Gil.. Same vision - different bloke.
What needs to be done? We need a CEO who thinks about the 'big picture', a CEO who has the games best interest at heart.

Helping out the GWS does not guarantee a flag, and certainly does not guarantee many generations of success. 100 years from now they may have no more flags then Fremantle or Port Adelaide.
Heck the AFL could give the wooden spooner each season the same concessions in that years draft and there is no guarantee that team would succeed either.

Still just a good young team at this stage. They'll be good but the Dogs are pretty close talent wise IMO.

Also a herald sun article at the start of the season on the most sought after out of contract players 6 of them were from GWS.
