Whatever man ya know what i mean....once the excitement of a new concept wears off barely anyone will go
I know what you meant, its just what you meant is almost the exact opposite of what nostalgia is, a bittersweet longing for things, persons, or situations of the past.

Until a time the girls get a bit more kicking penetration, I reckon we need to move the ball more by run and carry. I'm not sure we have the pace and fitness but I reckon that's the best bet. Open the forward line up to Mo Hope, try and suck her opponents away from her. I also reckon the hot spot is goal line not 30 metres out. So we need to drive the ball in a bit deeper.

If the standard builds so will the game. The AFL needs to ensure it is a legitimate career opportunity for elite young girls.

Personally in fairness to Yarra Council despite there reluctance to schedule bigger drawing crowds at Vic Park there's been no reports that we requested women's games there and were knocked back.

There is some evidence that we were supposed to have a pre-season game against Carlton at Vic Park this year. The AFL approved it, it was just subject to approval by council ...

... and it didn't end up happening.

If you've ever played the game, there tends to be two reasons why a chest mark is dropped: fatigue and/or distraction. The girls were fatigued, and they're gonna have to learn to perform under fatigue. Carlton did that way better than us.

To be fair, it is more difficult under lights.

I agree wth you in terms of those fans who attended for the 'novelty' factor. They may very well drop off, and crowd numbers decline.

But over time it will grow, it will build. Don't underestimate the new fans, mostly girls and young women, who will be drawn to watch the competition. The short season, coupled with the short timeframes of the games, make it a very attractive option for non-traditional footy fans. I can tell you there were plenty of the latter there on Friday night.

Showing they rather not have us there IF they could

Very true, a preseason match against Carlton at Vic Park for our 125th year celebrations would have been great. A double header with the women's sides would have been even better, although I've only read about a request/discussion occurring for a men's game. I had a whinge about that when the preseason fixture was released.

The lights were also temporary and a lot lower than the MCG lights. As a fan they got in my eyes at times, which has never happened at the G or Etihad, so I imagine they would also be worse for the players.

Because Don't think many AFL players would play it

I admit that I'd again prefer the game to be played at Princes Park, even if it's part of a double-header. Olympic Park just seems like a pitiful venue, especially after the atmosphere of last Friday night.

I've heard that the AFL are 'considering' the options, but is there any indication of when they'll actually decide?

Vic park!!!

It would be ideal from a supporters perspective but there are obviously issues with the Council there; issues which are forseeable. I wonder if those are issues which can be worked through? What I know is those discussions can take time and may not be achievable in the time remaining in the AFLW season. It's worth trying though!

Before the Game Starts;)

A brief summary of why using Vic Park is difficult, but still largely achievable with throwing money at it, and with forward planning (i.e. booking it in advance when the AFLW fixture was decided):

  • Vic Park has no secure fencing, with most if it removed in the last ten years. While entry could be free, temporary fencing is needed in order to manage crowd numbers/crowd control. This is a legal requirement. We saw it in action on Friday night.
  • Many of the old toilets have been removed/decommissioned. Temporary toilets would be required, and they take up space.
  • There are very limited refreshment options. Food trucks could be brought in, which also take up space, and an expanded liquor licence and liquor retail facilities introduced to meet demand. These need to be compliant with liquor licensing laws and food handling requirements.
  • There are very poor media facilities, which barely deal with VFL coverage. More and bigger media vans/facilities would be required, and they take up space.
  • The Ryder Stand has a legal limit on the number of fans allowed in, due to non compliant egress points. So it may not be able to be used to capacity.
  • When you add all of the above, the overall capacity would be nothing like the 20k of Princes Park. Maybe 10k at Vic Park.
  • These are all relevant considerations before blaming Yarra Council for not allowing games.
  • Let's also remember that the club left Vic Park and did not intend to return. That is the reason why the old facilities were removed or allowed to run down. No-one anticipated a future use of this type - AFLW games drawing crowds of 10k or more. I wish we had, and I wish we'd kept a presence at the ground, instead of having to go crawling back to Council begging to play there. And having to jump through all the legal hoops required to have big crowds. Princes Park and the Western Oval have these facilities still in place, hence they can accommodate the bigger crowds.

It's a pity we didn't do what St Kilda did with Moorabbin and maintain a lease of the ground after our departure, but 17 years ago a women's side wouldn't have even been a thought bubble.

That's right. And we did have the option of maintaining a lease over the Social Clib building, which we let go. Then years later took up the building again, to renovate and use for our philanthropic arm. Which is good.
