Info filtering through to clubs that the NFNL in their wisdom want to "trial" the time on/off in this weekends first week of Junior finals.
Apparently the details are yet to be confirmed (no need to rush these things i mean the games are only in 4 days) and no it will not be league officials but club volunteers doing it.
All i can say is watch this space!

They had club volunteers last year doing it in the senior men’s which is outrageous.

Junior finals need time on, you can be 2 points up and call for a stretcher with 2 mins left and it’s game over.

Should be the same as the ressies

Why not do it in matches in the last few rounds of the home and away season?

I can see a sh-tstorm brewing - after all, we have now reached the 'sheep station' stage of the season ...

yep absolutely, why would you trial it prior to finals to see if its workable? that would make too much sense!!!

I hope they have some time allowed for game delays or the start times of later games will blow out a fair way let alone disputes between clubs about when the siren should be blown.
Typical of the NFNL, think of something and expect mum and dad volunteers to get it done.
U11 junior footy?? time on? is it really necessary?

Fair point, but they just expect mum and dad volunteers to do it and have no issues?? First week of finals, no practice runs? Its crazy.
You even said yourself its outrageous Club volunteers did it.

Clubs surely have someone to keep time. It’s not rocket science. Finals are do or die, to many ways to exploit it otherwise.

When teams are against heavy winds I’ve seen them take 2 mins to fetch the ball to kick in. Way to easy to exploit.

yep absolutely agree, stretchers, any other injury that stops the game the clock should stop in any game, but im hearing that it will be every goal and or point, every boundary throw in and stretchers etc. But nothing confirmed as yet they tell me.

Yes of course clubs will have people to do it, but none will have done it before, most grounds now have scoreboards that blow the siren automatically.
I agree with what you are saying, but to trial it in finals(do or die!) i expect there to be some debacles by mums and dad timekeepers.

Years ago (in the good 'ol days), the clock would only stop for goals, behinds, stretchers and time-wasting (when little Johnny's kick goes over the fence and has to be retrieved or a pack continued to lock the ball in after a bounce was called). Then the AFL decided that every time play stopped, so did the clock, so the job of timekeeping - like other volunteer positions - was made harder.

If the matches were umpired as they were in the past, even novice timekeepers could do it, but given that some people might be roped in to do it for the first time in these conditions, I am sure that the clock won't stop here or will continue to run there when it shouldn't. It is fraught with danger given that no-one has done a trial run at any stage during the season.

Just saying, money is the key, the rest is cream.

In fairness though Max .... even Banyule with their connections and huge support have taken 7 years or so to get to Div 1. On that basis we would take about 35 years

Seriously though, this is not about top flight football right now I wouldn't think, but broadening our player recruiting opportunities over the next 5 years or so and grow from there. Unfortunately, for our club, those opportunities have been reducing year on year and we need to find ways to open up new opportunities somehow.

precisely! and then when it decides a final, parents will blow up.
We know it happens, yes its Junior footy but we all know it will happen.
one week to trial it and id say they could have eliminated most muck ups.

If you look under section 8.5 of the league's by-laws it clearly states all junior finals will have time on in the 3rd and 4th quarters, this has been able to be viewed all season. For what it's worth it should reduce the controversy as teams can't as blatantly waste time, although I'm sure they'll find a way to push the limits

Also, haven't clubs been supplying timekeepers since they stopped timing quarters by the angle of the sun, like every week in senior footy.

No, just someone who knows where to look to find relevant information. Found it when I was looking for info on quarter lengths for each age group earlier in the year as I have kids playing

The league messed up…

From the games I saw time-on was a bit of unnecessary overkill really. The scoreboard counted down the exact time remaining for all to see so teams with small leads would control the tempo of the game and protect their lead anyway

Outside of umps stopping the clock for serious injuries/stretchers where significant time is actually lost (or large scale cramping late in games because of the extra minutes played at finals intensity, as happened in 1 game I saw), it isn't really needed.

A lot of the games had league boundary umps and kids collecting the balls behind the goals so not much time would be lost there either

Given its prelims time, could they allocate an ump to the role.?

That seems like the most logical solution but from what I saw there were quite a few umps still doing 2 or 3 games, and looking at the umpire appointments on the website there were still a lot of games without boundary and goal umps so even with the reduction in games for Prelim weekend they will probably still argue they don't have the manpower for extra jobs.

From the people ive spoken to, there was some very sore and tired players particularly u15's and up. playing a normal 20 minute quarter to then play the last 2 at 28-30 minutes is pretty intense. Teams with limited bench are very vulnerable due to player fatigue.
From the games i watched, (and they were u12,13 boys games) its basically approx 30-50 seconds added for every goal, (and a point kicked can take just as long given time back on is when the player plays on), even with clubs providing ball retrievers. So with every score there is that amount of time added on. Then add boundary throw ins and its pretty much an additional quarter of football these kids are playing.
The games i watched did not have the time clock on countdown, just the clock running non stop.
Weather conditions were pretty perfect too, windy days may prove to be worse? Not sure how its going to go.

Im putting it out there, the NFNL website is the worst of any league i know!
We have Junior Grand Finals this weekend, Div 2 and 3 Finals a week away and the 5 top links for stories on it are for Netball!
Whoever runs it is clearly a netball fan, but none many others are i would think.
Absolute garbage.

$17.50 entry to finals, honestly.

There is a few clubs playing on both days Mernda, Old Eltham, St Mary’s. $35 a head to go to both matches is just way too much and really disappointing decision from the league.

Should be a day pass. That way it allows volunteers to go from venue to venue on one ticket. You get given a ticket that is a specified colour at the gate and keep it on you for the day. Each finals day has a different colour.

The only thing the league might counter that with is that they will say people are passing tickets through the fence to people waiting outside to get in for nothing.

First of all it shouldn’t be $17.50 to watch a reserves finals.

All clubs are only at one venue regardless, it’s just spread over 2 days. Clubs should get access to both games for 1 entry imo.

Don't clubs get 30 entry passes for matches for each team that plays at a ground on match day like other leagues do?

If a club plays on both days, surely the team officials and volunteers involved with the team get one of the 30 passes for free entry on both days?
