The Governor-General's XI match tomorrow will also be broadcast live on Foxtel and Kayo, for what will be Pakistan's first 50-over match in Australia since August 2014--a series they lost 4-0, despite three pretty close results (including a rain-shortened barnburner).

They were, however, here as recently as 2020 for the T20 World Cup in which they managed just the one win, upsetting the West Indies. Their game against Thailand was washed out, though it wasn't a guaranteed win gone begging considering they lost to them at last year's Asia Cup. Then they beat India a day after that loss... so it's very much an on-brand Pakistan cricket team in terms of volatility.

Unlike the Windies or Sri Lanka, their batting line-up doesn't feature anybody really good, but the depth is better. Bismah Maroof scored the defiant 78* against Aus at the 2022 CWC, and Nida Dar often digs them out of a 6/50 hole--both are just solid and have been around forever. Aliya Riaz (very inconsistent) and Ayesha Naseem (very young) can both tonk it.

Their pace bowlers bring a great deal of talent and flair to the table, led by Diana Baig (returning from injury) and supported by the likes of Fatima Sana, who won the ICC Emerging Player award last year:

Doubt Pakistan haven't settled on plans for the ODIs already, but I think they should abandon the idea of picking both Muneeba Ali (bespectacled opener deemed good enough to keep in T20s) and Sidra Nawaz (specialist keeper, batting at no. 8). Good keeper or average keeper, they aren't going to beat Australia yet. Therefore make the selection that benefits long term.

That would mean going with Ali as the keeper and creating a spot for Ayesha Naseem, who is missing the U19 WC for this tour so it's a bit crazy to not be playing her at every opportunity. They'll likely pick her for the T20s--how different is that to batting late in an ODI innings.

Australia haven't played an ODI since the 2022 CWC, where they beat England down in the final like stepchildren. Having named just a 13-player squad for these one dayers, there's really just the one selection decision left to be made:

Mooney+
Lanning*
Perry
McGrath
Sutherland
Gardner
Carey/Garth/Litchfield
Jonassen
King
Brown
Schutt

You could make a case for each of those players listed at 7 (noting Litchfield would probably bat no lower than 5 if selected), so maybe they'll rotate each match. Brown might be rested for one of the games, allowing one of them an extra game.

Usual fitness disclaimer applies. Jonassen is supposed to be good to go, but who knows.

Wasn't worth it's own thread but the under 19's losing to Bangladesh has to be a big shock doesn't it?

Yes, and while I'm not on top of the strength of U19 teams across the world, Bangladesh did have a couple of good wins in the warm up matches

If the tournament was held a year earlier, Australia would've had D.Brown, Litchfield, Voll, Flintoff and a few others who at 18yo were well ahead of the players in the current u19 team. In which case a loss to any team would've been a shock. As is, I wouldn't be betting on them, even if I was a betting man.

Will be interesting to see who opens the batting for Australia tomorrow, Mooney is a definite, but a decision on the second opener hasn't been made yet. There is some talk it may be Perry or Litchfield who opened the final T20 in India. I'm not sure they will open with Lanning because I think she is the best no. 3 in the world, but I wouldn't be surprised either if they give her the first shot.

I may be alone but I hate Lichfield opening, I love Phoebe but I hated her doing it in the WBBL too. She is still learning her game and she feels she has to go at 150 s/r all the time. If she plays I'd rather her in that old Haynes role at no5. I'd open with Perry, though I bet they won't.

She is playing. Opening would be the old Haynes role btw, whereas Mooney was the regular no.5 until now.

That's what I meant gah I get those two mixed up all the time. I like her batting at 4-5 personally.

Litchfield couldn’t have been any more impressive on debut, 78* off 92 to secure an easy win.

Still only 19!

Probably have to find a position for her. Maybe for Sutherland

Litchfield looked very impressive yesterday and creates an interesting dilemma for the selectors when Healy returns. Do they keep her as an opener and move Mooney back to five, or do they drop her down to five and potentially stifle her development as an opener for the future.

Think they have to keep her there and that’s despite me not loving her as an opener much prefer her at 4 personally. Sutherland drops out as she’s surplus anyway Perry and Gardner can bowl a bit more.

... she's not in the XI when Healy returns, unless somebody else gets injured. That would be the point of giving her the opportunity now. If they do have to use her later this year in England, where she's never played before, she'll at least have some runs at international level to draw confidence from.

They better hope Sutherland does something soon because at the moment she doesn’t bat and bowls what 1-2 overs…you telling us Perry or whoever couldn’t roll 1-2 overs down? Can see them sticking with Lichfield if she makes a lot this series however the next few games are the key it’s only 1 game
