BBL crowds 2022/23

Despite no more tickets being available, the radio (6PR) says they only expect a crowd of 52,000 tonight in the 60,000 seat stadium.
Sightscreen takes out some.

And the rest would be hospitality packages not taken up, and members who don't show up.

Surly the side screens would account for a fair bit of that?

Should have erected the temporary bump in seats square of the wicket, and increased capacity by 1,500 or so. Afterall, they don’t seem to get used for the rectangle sports anyway.

Hopefully they don’t have the seat coverings with Scorchers logos over lots of seats up on level 5 like they did during the home and away season.

That was awesome. Amazing atmosphere. 53k screaming fans I am sitting amongst. WOW!

And Perth people don’t turn up to the cricket. They do when it’s the sort of game Sydney and Melbourne take for granted. When you get the good games it can be really special!

53,886

Record bbl final crowd.

Embarrassingly, the Stars could only get 47,672 for the final they hosted in 2016. That's only half what the MCG can hold for cricket. Gotta admire the parochialism of West Aussies when it comes to the BBL. Sure, you could say having one team helps them.

Unlike the Stars, a team that is consistently successful is also helpful.

A BBL final is probably the biggest event in Perths history, it doesn’t even rank in Melbourne and yet still they got nearly 50,000!

It was also a Sunday night when people were back at work.

One million plus total crowds this season

Sad face for all the haters

The Renegades / Stars final only got 40k in 2019. It was at Marvel but no excuses for not filling it with both sets of fans.

Another bad comparison.

2nd-placed team unexpectedly hosting the final, with ~36 hours turnaround from the SF. Same thing happened with the Strikers getting 40k for the final in 2017/18.

Completely different to the Scorchers this time around, who finished on top, won their QF as expected and people still had a week from there to make plans to attend the final.

The Renegades and Thunder were a stupid thought bubble that should never have received traction. Their crowds are abysmal and they take away from the crowds of the Sixers and the Stars which are also poor relative to Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane. Without the Renegades and Thunder every team could play twice without the season stretching more than 1 month.

As it stands, I would still dump the Renegades and move the Thunder to Canberra. Each team should have the option of only playing 1 game outside their home city. The Stars in Geelong, Sixers in Coffs, Heat in Gold Coast, Hurricanes in Launceston. Perth and Adelaide are probably best playing also games in their home city.

But aren't the Hurricanes crowds like half of what the Renegades and Thunder get?

You don’t think every cricket state should be represented? My point being, what is the point of the duplication of teams in Victoria and NSW? If it was crowds and viewership, it failed. It also dilutes the talent pool, lengthens the competition etc.

I understand your point. It just isn't based on facts, and it's contradictory.

Fact is CA could put the teams up for private ownership, player salaries would skyrocket and all the best talent in the world would be attracted to the league. The reason they are reluctant to do that is because 7 teams would be bought by billionaires, and the Hurricanes would be bought by... idk, Todd & Brant.

Sounds like excuses.

The 1st 40k worth of seats went on sale at 10am on Sunday morning for the game and they were all sold that day. The rest on Friday once the challenger was known.

You don’t need a week notice to go to a game. Melbourne has 5 million people in it too compared to 2.5m in Perth.

Why are the renegades and Thunder considered the secondary teams of their respective cities when them as well as Stars and Sixers were all started at the same time?

Ahhh nah it's fairly common for people, by Friday night, to have already made plans for Sunday. Quite a bit different to people on Sunday morning not having yet made plans for the following Saturday.

CA changed the finals system for precisely this reason.

The Stars play at the G, the Renegades play at Marvel. The Stars also brought in big names like Warnie and Eddie McGuire as president, giving them an instant leg up on the Gades.
The Stars play at the SCG while the Thunder play way out in Homebush. No surprise one is more supported than the other.

But you know your team is in the prelim, you can plan for the future. A weeks notice vs three days means nothing when it’s all set out and scheduled.

There seems to be a lot of precious fans in Melbourne who won’t go to Marvel and only like the MCG.

36 hours is 3 days now, eh. How about just for once we give CA credit where it's due. Called their shot in July 2019:
