BigFooty is 20 Years Old - How has footy changed in those two decades?

So much more commercialised, commodified (is that a word?).
AFL now sees itself as a "leader" in social engineering, which is ok up to a point but bloody annoying when they get too woke.
Players are under so much more scrutiny it's no wonder mental health issues seem to have become more common. Although it's being talked about these days whereas it used to be a dirty little secret, so THAT'S good too.
Social media wasn't a thing 20 years ago so the pressures and scrutiny are now intense, and have far more influence or consequences than they should.
The game is almost unrecognisable but we have to expect it will always evolve depending on rules, tactics, coaches. You can't go back!

The Bulldogs are a whole lot better too :)

As far as Bigfooty is concerned - some of the topics in the early days were bloody funny - the David Mensch and Rebecca Twigley ones spring to mind :grinning:. Also remember the Collingwood fan who took on the Cats fans (2011) with endless indisputable theories as to why the Pies were going to beat Geelong in the GF, and the opposite happened.

BigFooty has been around for 20 seasons of footy.

How do you think footy has changed, for the better or worse, over those 20 seasons?
How long you been the chief out of interest? Were you part of the initial setting up?
Always a brisbane fella?
always wondered these questions....

I have always been, and always will be.

Not so much about the footy itself, but I for one have enjoyed how each season the supporters of the reigning champs inherently become the most knowledgeable and wise on all footy and non-footy related matters on BigFooty and I am truly thankful as they take up the mantle and impart that wisdom generously across each of the threads. Somewhat less enjoyable is the subsequent descent into sh5tfights on most of those same threads with the supporters of the previous champs as they themselves struggle to come to terms with their own depletion of footy knowledge that invariably accompanies their team's descent back down the ladder.

As one of those that could be described as the Homer Simpsons of BigFooty (Freo supp.), we can only look on with awe and try to soak up some of that wisdom.

Footy has changed a lot in terms of coverage, and the internet and pay tv is a huge part of that.

However, I would argue that the change between 1980 and 2000, was far more significant than 2000 to 2020. The modern game was well into full swing in 2000, and the sport was fully professional at this point.

Been around for 17 of those years (!) and honestly, the professionalism within the league has increased but the kind of s**t that BigFooty posters roll with hasn’t really changed at all.

Still a points scoring/dick measuring contest for the most part. Off field issues are still hilarious for everyone but the team involved and everyone is still irritated by commentators and journos.

The internet made the world smaller. All of sudden sports around the world were much more accessible and we could adopt ideas from anywhere and implement them. I think footy changed when paul roos introduced team defense with sydney in mid 2000s. It went from 18 lots of 1v1 battles to 18v18.

Also sportsbet!

I remember in high school my friend who was into the NBA had to buy the paper on Monday or whenever to find out the scores from the weekend.

Jesus that’s 30 years ago.

Teams and coaches are immeasurably less naive when it comes to defending across the whole ground and constricting the opposing team from scoring.

Scary how quick the times gone isn't it.
During a 6 or 12 week swing offshore I didn't used to get any info from family or sport, I see young guys get antsie/irritated when the connection drops out for a few minutes and they can't connet nowadays!

I can’t speak for the whole 20 years of big footy as I joined in 2007. But like this website things do change over time.

Although we do tend to think of the past in rose tinted glasses, I think the game as a tv spectacle in particular was much better. Players had space in which to move, Key forwards could barely run outside the 50m arc and still have a genuine impact on a footy match.

Nowadays, the game is so quick, yet at times it feels like such a rolling maul. Players have so little space with which to work in. Teams are so well drilled defensively, goals are so much harder to kick. Key forwards now need to have almost midfield running capacity to be able to have an impact. FWIW, with the exception of goal kicking, the skills are much better now than 20 years ago

Don’t get me wrong, I still love footy. But in 2000 I could easily watch the Friday night, Saturday, Saturday night and two games on Sunday and not be bored. Now I am lucky if I watch a full game. I can’t explain it; the magic is gone for mine.

Footy is also so much more commercialised now. For mine, to a fault. The game is a product and rules are altered to protect the product, not the game. Forward planning is important, to start to appeal to a newer, diverse generation of fans, I understand; but can you really say the 666 rule was anything other than An attempt to appease the TV station frustrated with a reduction in Ad space because teams aren’t scoring enough?

Social media has really amped the pressure on players, too. They can’t escape it, because even if they don’t have a profile, their friends and family will. The trolling of both men & women players is ridiculous on twitter, regardless of whether a player played well or not.

Bring back the hats and jackets!

Overall the game is better than it ever was......

Positives...
it’s quicker
more exciting.
finals like pressure
skills under pressure
competition is more even
every goal counts - goals aren’t cheap! (Are you listening Clarco)

Negatives...
stupid 50mtr frees.
a few too many interchanges.
reversing A free kick Is wrong.
rules need changing and consolidating.
