11 – COLLINGWOOD – STEPHEN HILL
West Perth, WA, Small/medium midfielder, May 1, 1990, 183.7cm, 68.9kg
(Draft range: 3-12)

Hill could go as early as No.3 to Fremantle, while Essendon, Carlton or North Melbourne are also interested. Or is he the one who just slides outside of the top 10? Expect the Pies to swoop if available. There is another intriguing part to Collingwood's first selection – the continual link with Queenslander Dayne Beams. The Magpies are believed to be eager to recruit the stoppage midfielder, but will he last until their second pick at No.29? The Pies have also been closely aligned with Tom Swift, who is regarded as a first-round/priority selection.

29 – COLLINGWOOD – DAYNE BEAMS
Southport, QLD, Medium midfielder, February 12, 1990, 186.2cm, 76.9kg
(Draft range: 11-29)

For quite some time now Beams has been closely linked with the Pies after knocking back an offer to play with Gold Coast. Beams is a genuine top 30 selection and has been mooted strongly at No.11, Collingwood's first selection. He is condiered the ideal stoppage player replacement for recently retired captain Scott Burns. The question with Collingwood and Beams is will he slide through to No.29? Opinion is divided, with Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Essendon and the Brisbane Lions also considering him.

45 – COLLINGWOOD – SAM WRIGHT
Murray Bushrangers, VIC, Medium forward, July 15, 1990, 188.1cm, 76kg
(Draft range: 28-54)

Highly-rated by the Pies, Wright could conceivably land at No.29 and it's unlikely he would slip past Collingwood's back-to-back picks at No.45 and No.46. He is also attracting interest from Adelaide, Hawthorn, West Coast and Port Adelaide. Stanley, Mangan, Rounds, Shiels, DeBoer, Benjamin, Bucovaz and Taylor Hunt have also been linked to the Pies with these picks.
46 – COLLINGWOOD – TOM GILLIES
Dandenong Stingrays, VIC, Tall defender, March 7, 1990, 192.3cm, 86.5kg
(Draft range: 29-50)

With St Kilda (47 and 48) and Hawthorn (50) very interested in Gillies, the Pies are likely to swoop on the full-back before them. That's unless the Hawks fly under the radar at No.34. He has certainly come up the pecking order in recent weeks. Stanley, Mangan and DeBoer will again be strongly considered here if not taken at No.45.

3 – COLLINGWOOD – SHANE SAVAGE
Dandenong Stingrays, VIC, Medium midfielder, January 5, 1991, 185.1cm, 74.5kg
(Draft range: 59-not selected)

Savage, a bottom-age player, has attracted considerable interest late in the draft, with Hawthorn, North Melbourne and Collingwood all interested. It is the Pies' final pick, and more than likely will be used. Other names to monitor late for the Magpies are Tom Hill, Jamie Bennell, Cockie, Gilligan, Kyal Horsley and Jack Weston. And don't discount ex-Roo Leigh Brown.

Re: Matt Burgan - 2008 Phanton Draft

hill? i would have thought if swift was availiable we would get him.
id love for beams to slip down to 29!
wat are you thoughts??

Re: Burgans Phantom Draft about Pies

4 mids and a KPB is what we had pretty much all been thinking.

Hill at 11 and Beams at 29 has been discussed at length on this board so not surprised by those picks.

Wright has not been talked up much but for memory he is a bit of a Thomas-clone right down to looks isn't he? I guess if we rated Dale so highly it makes sense we would be in to Wright as well.

Interested to hear Snoop and TRS's take on this, especially Savage.

Is he? The young girls will be pleased. Dale's getting a bit past it.

Re: Burgans Phantom Draft about Pies

So who aren't we linked to is the question.

Re: Burgans Phantom Draft about Pies

Q. Is Hill an inside player or an outside player?

Re: Matt Burgan - 2008 Phanton Draft

It's clear that at least one of Hill, Trengrove, Sidebottom or Swift will be available. We shouldn't be looking outside of these 4 with our first rounder. As keen as Hine is on Beams, crossing our fingers for him to be available at #29 is a risk worth taking. Beams-Shuey/Lisle or Swift/Sidebottom-Beams/Shuey?

And all this talk of us needing to add depth at the key posts?? Brown, Cloke, O'brien, Ried, Rusling, Anthony, Dawes all U/23. What am i missing? Reid/Anthony at CHB keeping Brown and O'brien down back. Cloke, Rusling and Reid/Anthony working the triangle at the pointy end for the next 8 years. Dawes, Fraser, Wood, Bryan, Maxwell and Sack are all capable of pinch hitting at either end. Lacking depth?? Egan, Illes off the list- Stanley champion VFL player, Cook wont play in a premiership o'bree and lockyer will decline from this over the coming seasons. This needs to be a mid draft like '05. Having said that i'd be happy with Trengrove at #11. Way too good to pass up.

McCarthy, Barham, Wellingham, Swift, Beams....

Re: Matt Burgan - 2008 Phanton Draft

I'm pretty confident that Hine will take Beams at 11...he fit our needs exactly and he will be the Pendlebury type pick (i.e. goes much earlier than most expected)

Not sure on Swift, if ou medical team has cleared him of any permanant damage, then he will be our no 11.

Thanks for your input guy's. Much appreciated.:thumbsu:

I don't think so - He's more of a marking, medium-sized player. He's got creativity like Dale (although not as much), but he seems to be somewhat doubling up on Brent Macaffer, not to mention the other plethora of small forwards.

I don't know that he really fits on the roster that we have, so I don't know that I'd be happy about using a third round pick on him.

It's a pretty good draft overall though - Shane Savage is a solid bottom-age potential type pick to use #73 on, but now that he's predicted it, I'd doubt it'll happen.

Still, come draft day, I'd be happy with Hill, Beams, Wright, Gillies and Savage. By my own rankings, if the draft went down as he's predicting it, from who's left at each pick in his draft, I'd go with Tom Swift at #11, Dan Hannebery at #29, Clancee Pearce and Rhys O'Keefe at #45 and #46, and Riley Milne at #73, but who knows if that will be a possibility come Saturday.

As always, I will instead defer my judgment to the great Derek Hine - He won't let us down.

Have to disagree here.

Hine has said definitely best available at pick 11 - if this holds true, then no way we will take Beams here as there would certainly be better options than him still around.

I'd be happy to risk him still being there at 29.

Don't know much about Savage or Gillies - can anyone advise?

Re: Burgans Phantom Draft about Pies

If we get Beams at 29 I will.........I don't know, but you get the point.

I would be very happy to snap up a highly rated player at 11 and then get Beams at 29.

If you are Correct then it could be Hill if he falls and I reckon if freo don't take him at 3 then it will be a very good chance of Happening

Will Put Video's tonight when I get home from Tafe

Who know Hine might have him Rated up there and Take him because of that

Re: Burgans Phantom Draft about Pies

If we take Hill I'll eat my hat!

I actually rate Hill very highly but I don't see him being within our mindset to be honest.

If Swift is there, put your house on it that he will be taken at 11.

Thanks VV. Wasn't Dale used a lot as a small-medium forward at Gippsland also? I thought I read somewhere that Wright has spent some time in the middle this year also.....

I agree with your comments though. I think we would be better placed to go for a midfielder than another HFF that can run through the middle.

I think we'll take Beams with 11.

That's the kind of comment I never understand. I mean, how do you know that? How many punters rated Pendlebury the best prospect at #5? The reality is that none of us know who Hine rates and who he doesn't, or in what order.

Hine may rate Beams in his top eleven. Just as he might rate one of the kids everyone's drooling over -- like Rich -- outside the top eleven. We just don't know. Us mug punters don't have enough knowledge of the kids in question to adjudicate over the worthiness of Beams, or anyone else, at #11.

Reading the Drafts and Trading board and watching some YouTube clips and a couple of championships matches ain't a substitute for the reams of material the professionals have.

Exactly, some people start think that BigFooty phantom drafts are better than the recruiters.

Beams certainly has enough to work with that whilst it would be unexpected on bigfooty I'd be excited if we took him at 11. He has heaps to work with and would fill a need and could be the type of player which really helps our midfield take the next step. If we got say Beams and Hanneberry in this years draft I'd be pretty confident with the shape of our midfield going foward. That said if it where Swift and Beams or Hanneberry I'd be equally confident.
