Review Cats into ANOTHER PRELIM (14 of 18) after beating Lions by 38 points

I get what you mean but very bad take. The free kick should always be at the place of greatest advantage, either where the ball is or where the free kick occurred. Otherwise, say there's a quick break and you have some defender outnumbered in the goalsquare...you just grab an opponent's jumper and force a free kick where the ball is 60 metres out from goal rather than ten metres out where the infringement took place. This would actually disadvantage the attacking team.

The rule is fine, the umpiring was poor in this instance and outside the spirit of the game. The key thing is once you pay something you have to be consistent in your application, and with something like the Raynor dive it encourages similar poor behaviour.
That's a good point. However I don't see why that wouldn't just be an advantage paid and then if there's still an infringement and no advantage, you pay it where the ball is.

That was a great night, I wasn’t enjoying it at the time but having a little bit of adversity to deal with can only help us I think. Plenty to tweak in terms of forward entries & low percentage shots at goal.

Such a strong team effort, pretty much everyone did ‘something’ at some stage, Jack Henry was awesome all night.

Has there been any focus on that Jack Martin bump on Neale? It feels like something Michael Christian would like to get involved in 🙄 Jack was a bit patchy at times, but also instrumental in a couple of goals along with his own. He fits us very well.

For those who watched the game on Foxtel/Kayo, we did hit the jackpot last night with the commentary team. Gerard and Huddo call the game (two hardcore Geelong supporters) with Moons and TBone doing boundary and special comments. It was nice to hear a little bias toward us for a change in the commentary as it so rarely happens.

I was actually talking to someone about this a few weeks ago. Little things like that in the rules weirdly fascinate me.

Didn't imagine that it would come and bite us that hard in a final.

Very easy to correct mind you. Like you say- make the free kick (if it's there!!!) to be taken from where the ball is at the time of the indiscretion. After a goal, ball is deemed to be in the centre. After a behind - goal square. Oob - from where it crossed the boundary.
The problem isn’t that rule. The problem is that O’Connor made unnecessary contact, Rayner flopped and the ump gave it.

Still a disadvantage to the attacking team, a guaranteed set shot in the goal square is always better than a kick inside 50.

If the rule is play the free where the ball is, players can give away legitimate free kicks to gain an advantage which will just be abused from players at key moments that umpires have to pay even if they know it's against the spirit of the game.
As the rule currently is, it only falls down when there is umpire error.

As far as rules go you'd always rather it be an issue of umpire error than deliberate abuse of loopholes by players. Take the rushed behind rule, what's worse, Hawthorn rushing 12 behinds in a game or the risk that once or twice a year a side gets a dodgy rushed behind free kick that maybe wasn't there?

Sorry, I'm an umpire.

Best game I've been to since the 22 GF.
Our pressure in each quarter was UBER!
A massive win despite the umpiring 3 goal turnaround for Brisbane-- while I was hopeful for a win, could not have imagined we go home with the satisfaction of such a performance.

Do you believe we can win the flag now? We are going to have a very winnable prelim against either hawthorn or an interstate team that doesnt have a great mcg record. And then a GF against either a banged up brisbane or an ageing Collingwood who we have a good record against. It really will be a fail if we dont win it from here.

Umpires shouldn't give free kicks when players flop period. And if they are being coached too their coach should be sacked. It's like nrl players lying down when they are fine to get the bunker involved. It's a rort.

After the second free kick was awarded to Rayner in front of the goal in the 2nd quarter, I was impressed by how Tom Stewart got in there among the lads and calmed them down, telling them not to react. That was A-grade leadership right there.

First time I synced up K Rock commentary to Kayo all year and it was so worth it just to hear Touhey's reaction to Mullin's goal...almost brought a tear to my eye.

When he is able to play a looser more attacking backline role he is very good.

I do worry that a team might try and isolate him and he would exposed, but that certainly didn’t happen last night. Stewart back healthy and j Henry being j Henry is a game changer for COS.

Adelaide will try (if we get them) and thilthorpe or fogarty could monster him in the wrestle which is why its important stanley is back for the prelim so we can use blicavs for support behind the ball.
If we get hawthorn I'm not so worried re that.
But intercepting wise COS is elite once he gets more size and strength he will be awesome.

While it would be nice not to have umpires give free kicks for flops they are human and mistakes can happen.

The solution is to start handing out suspensions for it that scale the more you do it.

First time 1 week
Second time 2 weeks
3rd time 4 weeks
4th time 8 weeks
etc

I bet players stop flopping rather quickly

With Stewart and Mullin snagging majors last night, there's only been 3 players to have played a game this season who haven't kicked a goal this year (yet) - Jack Henry, Connor O'Sullivan and Jed Bews.

I thought Dangerfield and Blicavs set the tone early dialing pressure to 11. It was something we’ve maybe lacked for a lot of this season and in finals footy it was nice to see we had that in the quiver. To start like that I think helped Holmes and Smith do their usual thing wearing the opposition down with their running even more.

I’m hoping to watch the replay tonight. Good to hear there will be decent commentary

Amazing win despite the farcical elements of it.

Mannagh and Atkins were huge. Jack Henry was rock solid. Stewart back to his best. Among many others.

At the game noticed an ump was permantly stationed in Brisbane's forwardline every centre bounce just staring at the goalsquare.
Eagle eye looking for the slightest touches.

Pity about the five minute delay we pay for.

Isn’t the umpires’ boss Steve ‘Demonstrative Abuse’ McBurney? If so he will love the umpire inserting their influence on big moments in big games.

If there was no Hawkins poster missed in the 2009 GF then that free demonstrative abuse free kick gift goal against Milburn would be talked about more as among the worst frees of all time.

Rayner pushed MoC in the chest prior to the first bump into the back.
The same push Stewart gave Lohmann that resulted in a goal to them?

It's completely unreasonable that any of those are called and I'm sure we won't see that umpire again this season.

not interested in hearing the rule rubbish, if you paid a free for each prohibited contact they'd be 300 frees a game

Exactly. If you pay one you have to pay them all. How many goals would the likes of Stengle and Mannagh kick if the umps were consistent about it?
