Alot of the angst about Ainsworth on here seems to come from the fact he has a funny ball drop....but mostly because a few on here really wanted Worpel at that pick.
There's not much else we missed out on (at this stage) besides him in that draft afterwards (maybe Gryan Miers?)
Though I will say, some of those same people wanting Worpel, also thought Kelly and Ryan weren't worth picks in the first two rounds in that same draft, so swings and roundabouts in the end........
), is that our recruiters cant manage to successfully draft genuine midfielders, so those that they do draft, that have major flaws in their game, or come up short, get over scrutinised ( and probably unfairly ), but its frustrating ( polite version ) that we cant seem to get that aspect of our drafting right. No one gives a sh*t that he has a funny ball drop so much, what garners angst is that said " funny ball drop" makes his kicking inaccurate and he therefore turns the ball over all to frequently and also makes his ball delivery by foot unreliable.
I suspect that compounding the situation as to why he cops so much flack from posters ( and hand up I am one of them), is that our recruiters cant manage to successfully draft genuine midfielders, so those that they do draft, that have major flaws in their game, or come up short, get over scrutinised ( and probably unfairly ), but its frustrating ( polite version ) that we cant seem to get that aspect of our drafting right.
If the recruiters get us a genuine midfielder, even a B grader via the draft, then many of the critics would pipe down.
I will STFU when / if, we successfully draft a quality genuine midfielder ....... Jesus I ain't greedy I just want one.
It amuses me that many of the O'Brien apologists on here, ( who by the way are IMO also some of our better posters and generally contribute posts of high quality) when they point out the disturbing lack of midfield depth on our list...... BUT ...... they are not prepared to hold the recruiters accountable for their ongoing midfielders swings and misses at the draft table, which has a knock on effect, in that we then have to spend overs in draft capital, to trade in genuine mids.
And yes you are goddam right I wanted Worpel and rated his one and a half draft rounds ahead of Mr Ainsworth .
Rant now over and I will have a cup of tea with a Bex powder, lay down on the couch and dream about when we sometime in the future draft a genuine A grade quality midfielder.
I always find it strange people harp on about our lack of midfielders in the draft when we currently have a pretty good midfield. If we were a team struggling for years down the bottom of the ladder with a struggling midfield I could understand but thats not the case.
That's because when we get in situations like these with an injury to a first choice mid.I always find it strange people harp on about our lack of midfielders in the draft when we currently have a pretty good midfield. What team has that luxury? Any decent mid will be in the first 22 for any team unless you're GWS.That's because when we get in situations like these with an injury to a first choice mid.
Would be nice to have a player of decent quality ready to come in.
Let's see how he who cannot be nicknamed goes.
If you look at our A+ mids; Shuey, Kelly, Yeo, Gaff, we either traded them in, or were picked up in the draft 10 or more so years ago.
Since we drafted Gaff in 2010 the best mid we have drafted is Sheed.
Does it matter "how" you build a list though? Draft, trade, FA, rookie...as long as you build a team that competes for (and occasionally wins) flags, then your doing your job as recruiters imo.
Like I said in a previous post, I've shared the frustrations....but given our record, perhaps our recruiters are ahead of the game?
Buoy oh buoyExcited to see how we go from here. Feel like the balance of youth and experience is getting closer to the right zone.
The old boys definitely get buoyed by the enthusiasm of the young guys.
Agree................unless Heath Chapman is available.I agree with with that, I was just trying to explain what I thought other people's frustrations were. Like others, I get a bit worried about our depth in the midfield.
Next two drafts we should be focussing on drafting good mids.
No more rucks, no more key position players.
off field stuff?Still no Jetta...a 2 week drop, curious...
Amazingly, if we can beat Adelaide this week we will be a game off second (or even first depending on Port v Giants). All this meltdown about the midfield...understandably the last few weeks been woeful..out of our comfort zone, whatever...but things can change quickly in footy as we know...it's not impossible for this midfield to get back to Optus and for everything to click into gear and lay all this talk to waste!? The arrogance and chardonnay will return and all will be forgotten, as we move on to a new grievance?
or not...starts tomorrow.
Just seemed unusual for someone of his calibre to be left out 2 weeks running..but the defence worked well without him last week...he has been dropped before of course (and it might've been 2 weeks there from very vague memory?)..a 2 week 'rocket' to sort his head out for the Derby?
