Changes for the Eagles

I would have thought that van Berlo would be a better match up for Embley and Dogga for LeCras

I think Doughty has become a great player but i still feel he'll struggle one-on-one in defence against a guy who is strong overhead (ie Chapman). I'd keep him away from LeCras. Prefer Johncock on him if he starts deep or VB if he pushes up further.

We need to be settling the side ready for finals, so the only changes would be to bring in players that are in our best 22. Thus, Mackay and Dangerfield are ins - Douglas and Sloane are out despite reasonable games. Bock will resume as soon as he is fit, Burton likewise. Sellar to remain in the squad unless Griffin's form demands his inclusion or Moran returns.

IN: Burton, Mackay
OUT: Douglas, Sloane (it's kinda harsh methinks, both had decent games)

If Danger is fit then swap him for Symes, I suppose, although Symes will be unlucky, in my opinion.

With Burton back we'll cause large ice cream headaches for the Eagles' defence, could be the key to us winning.

So what do you guys think? Should we be feeling confident etc.?

Hit the nail on the head with the changes.:thumbsu: Also I think we should be confident, that's if we want to be a top 4 side, which I assume they do. Eagles have been a bogey team for us in the past, however we have to much to play for to drop this one. Adelaide by 45 points.

being realistic I fail to see how the team that played last week can't beat WCE

Unless there is an injury I don't think we need to change. Mackay to force Sloane out week after.
Burton is a walk-up starter when fit, which by all reports will be this week, so he definetley comes in. Also Mackay is easily best 22, so he comes straight back in, but wouldn't be suprised if he played for South to get some match fitness.

It should be a requirement that you at least no something about the team and players before posting on the board!
I agree.

Knowledge of the English language optional though.

We should never disrespect the Eagles, Gets, because not only are they our bogey side, they have won their last 3 games in a row.

I watched them today against the Kangaroos and they're certainly not crap. The Bulldogs and Essendon know that only too painfully well.
Agree with this. The Eagles have actually looked ok of late.

Sam Butler back. McKinley finally getting some games. Break out year for Le Cras. Kennedy slowly turning into the player he was always touted. Wirrpanda and Embley are still playing some decent footy too. Houlihan, Swift, McGinnity, Wilson... where did these blokes come from??? I miss Chad Fletcher and Josh Wooden :o

Eagles are hardly an easy beat at the moment. They have played some great footy over the past month. However I feel we should easily account for them. Our biggest problem will come in ruck, hopefully our mids watch out the Eagles set up around clearances and where Nick Nat puts the ball because he will jump all over Maric and Sellar. The guy is a freak, and was jumping all over McIntosh and Goldstein on the weekend. Only had 5 and 2 more hitouts respectively but just looked to be jumping over the top all game.

We should be able to account for their forwards easy enough and whilst Butler and Hurn are in some decent form we will have to many options up front.

If Mackay is ready just give him a run in the SANFL to gain some match fitness, Burton in if fit. Danger could do with a run in the SANFL to ease back into it as well. They MUST play the last round to prepare for finals though. That being said wouldn't mind seeing Davis get a game for Otten on the weekend. Gives Davis his taste and desire to work harder in the off season and gives Otten a valuable rest before the finals come around. He is looking a shadow of his former self at the moment.

Out: Otten (rest), Sloane
In: Davis, Burton

Week after that we really need to settle our side before rd 1 of the finals. Danger Mackay come back in.. at the expense of who though... Douglas will make way for Danger easy enough, and most here are saying Mackay for Symes. However Symes has had a great last few weeks and copping a lot of unfair criticism on his disposal. Whilst he isn't the best by foot he also was not the worst.

May I suggest we drop one of our rucks and have Tippett fill in for the 25% of the game. Tippett is spending a lot of time running in off the square at center bounces anyway. Last week Tippett did not have his best game anyways and struggled to get into the contest. Playing him in the ruck will also help him get involved in the game and stop him from falling out of touch. We saw how well this was working earlier on in the season. Plus it gives us an extra midfielder around stoppages! Since Burton has been back we are blessed with taller options up forward. Whist Tippett is easily our best option up forward I feel that we would gain more by dropping either Maric or Sellar and bringing in another running, Mackay instead of dropping someone like Symes. Not many times have I seen both Maric and Sellar on the ground, that last bench spot seems to be reserved for the resting ruckman. The extra runner will make a massive difference in the rotations we can have. Look at how it hurts when we go with 1 less on the bench for part of the game. Collingwood last week really showed our mids were running out of legs when we had limited options coming off the bench.

What do you think? Going back to playing just the 2 talls like we did earlier on in the year. Now we have Burton back we still should be able to have the same structure and it will give us an extra runner off the bench.

Out: Douglass, Shirley, Sloane

In:Walker, Danger, Burton

I think Mackay is unlucky but has been out quite a while and hes not at the level where he comes straight back into the side after a long lay off but i expect him to be back by finals and as much as id love to see Griffin play Sellar has been doing a fantastic job and looked good around the ground against the Hawks

Can't see Shirley being dropped, partly due to his 150th and mainly because we will need him in R22 for our biggest game of the year.

OUT: Sloane
IN: Burton

D-Mac to have a run in the SANFL (South might actually be competitive with him and SMACK playing) and Danger to have another week's rest.

He was super for a ruckman playing only his 8th game. People talk about his unwillingness to kick, but coming off a knee injury earlier in the year that will develop. I'm just excited to see his ruckwork is so good so early, still extremely raw and a few years before he starts to play 4 quarter games I would think, but he is extremely exciting.

Right, now that I've said that :D, I'll say what I was actually here to say. Naita may not play this week, having scans on his shoulder and may not play the last two games, not sure yet.

Also Masten and Brown are definite outs with injuries, which is a big blow for us, both youngsters that have had excellent seasons.

I don't think we were really in with a chance, no Cox and Kerr still, but we have been playing good footy and the young team will be pumped up. Hoping for a good game in any case, have enjoyed watching the Adelaide youngsters this year as well, also quite enjoyed the Fremantle game. ;)

Triggy on ABC Radio just stated "Dangerfield will be there for finals, but 50:50 for this week; Mackay and Burton currently 50:50 for this week; Bock unclear for rest of the year"

Not a lot to work with there but does confirm Danger is an automatic selection when fit, even with the potential log-jam for spots coming up:thumbsu:

Davis must come in this week. Craig has already stated the need for rookies to play afl to really get the most out of their pre season. This is his best chance, but probably as a defender. Oddly, it seems the AFC seems to be pulling forwards out of nowhere and we now have an abundance of quality forwards. Not a bad place to be in given that only 2 years ago, we had nothing.

So its possible none of the injured players return this week. Far out Mackay had a scan last week which showed no strain to the hamstring and then misses 2 games after that. WEIRD.

So IF no one returns this week I'd give Davis a crack. Like many have said it will be good for his development just knowing the level thats required. Plus we'll be able to see (like we have with McKernan and now Sloane) whether we could use them if required this year in finals (if severe injuries occur).

It should be a relatively easy game for him to debut in given WCE young side and its at home. Would only be for one game and make it clear to him that it Burton is fit the next week he comes in for him. That way he knows where he stands, he knows they are giving him a taste for his benefit and to see whether they could play him if required.

So, ONLY IF NO ONE IS AVAILABLE TO RETURN FROM INJURY:
In: Davis
Out: Douglas (wouldnt happen, Sloane would go before him but not if I were coach).

Would like to do
In: Davis, Walker
Out: Sellar, Douglas (Tippett to ruck a bit).

Its not ideal because Tippett is great as full time forward, but I'd like Walker to get another crack. Sellar has been playing well as well so probably not deserved. Just want Walker in and dont like a spot on the bench permanently occupied by resting ruckman.

Extremely tough week for selectors again this week, however I think this week is the week to start settling our side for the finals. Unfortunately, barring injuries, the time for blooding players such as Davis is gone, so I feel he may have to wait until next year.

Similar will happen to Sloane, whilst IMO he showed that he most certainly has what it takes to make it at AFL level, he will be first to lose his place to players such as Mackay, Dangerfield and Burton.

Douglas I suppose is next, played a solid game on the weekend, but again unfortunately there are only 22 spots and his currently is the least certain.

Beyond this I suppose its either Shirley or Symes, both of whom would be extremely unlucky, but again, those coming in are better players than these two and as such get preferance. At the moment I'm leaning towards Symes being the first out, mainly due to the fact that come finals we'll likely need Shirley for tagging jobs.

With regards to the rucks, I feel the match committee have already decided that, barring injury/Griffin showing form resembling that of an AFL quality ruckman(which I believe he is) stuck in a lesser comp(rather than form associated with an average SANFL quality ruckman), the Maric/Sellar combo is the one they will take going into finals. Now is not the time to go fiddling with this partnership, Maric has started to show some pretty good form, especially early against the Hawks where he took a couple of quality, goal saving, pressure, pack type grabs in the back half and Sellar is coming off a career high hitout count and starting to look more and more like a ruckman.

As such, my side(assuming Burton, Mackay and Dangerfield do return) would be:

B: Johncock - Rutten - Otten
HB: Doughty - Stevens - Goodwin
C: Mackay - Thompson - Reilly
HF: McLeod - Hentschel - Knights
FF: Porplyzia - Tippett - Dangerfield
1R: Maric - Edwards - Vince
I: Sellar, van Berlo, Symes, Shirley
E: Griffin, Douglas, Sloane

In: Dangerfield, Mackay (Assuming fit)
Out: Sloane, Douglas (All very unlucky)

Moran may be fit to play in the next few weeks (or at least that was the time frame for his knee rehab when he injured it), so that will throw a spanner or two in the works, especially if grif is showing this form everyone says he is.

Personally I'd stay with sellar/maric for stabilities sake, sellar is improving and maric is starting to come into some form.

Other than that, I mostly agree with James_37 with regards to the changes to the side. The only thing that may happen, is that I think they are likely to be extra cautious with Dangermouse and Mackay. Burton should certainly come in for someone, most likely (Baby Face) Sloane.

If Moran is 100% fit, he plays.

He's run out of time ........he's not good enough to come back into the side without having played 1-2 afl games.

Under finals pressure - unacceptable risk

Bock :( We'll miss him big time in finals if he's out for the season.

Since Danger & Mackay are expected to play it should be:

Out: Sloane (unlucky as he was good in his first game), Douglas
In: Dangerfield, Mackay.
