That is really low time in ground for Young, so maybe Martin will come in. Did Young just have to be benched to much out of fitness/tiredness? May need a rest, which wouldn’t shock me. He’s had to play the first ruck role for a number of weeks now. Must be pretty draining when you aren’t used to it!
I think we just needed Tim to even up the ruck battle and Young is pretty useless in the forward.

One thing that Bevo will have to consider is that Young’s low TOG % wouldn’t have affected us in the last quarter because the Lions were one down themselves so it evened up that side of things, rather than creating a disadvantage.

I can’t help but feel like Naughton would absolutely tear a grand final in Perth to shreds. Would thrive on the pressure of playing in front of his home crowd. Just gotta get him there.

I reckon Baz goes ballistic building off that 4th quarter. His confidence would be sky high.

This is one of the first times all year that I don’t want to drop Hannan. His long range goal was clutch and that front and centre and quick handball to Baz was poetic. He’s really building.

My selection hopes: Any of Martin, Sweet, Garcia, Marra, or Wallis.

I’ve been unhappy with Hannan’s selection in the team a few times this year, especially a couple when brought in underdone. He deserves credit for his last couple of games and maybe confidence is building.

How he hit that late contest was good and clean at speed, but the way he feinted left and made 2 opponents go that way whilst dishing it off the other way to Baz that gave him that bit more space was just good footy IQ

Sacrificing the ruck?
Didn't Lewy and Timmy have the same hit-outs to advantage as the Big O, that's a massive win in my books.

If the lions offered to trade the Big O for Lewy and Timmy, I would do it in a heartbeat.!!!!!!
The doggies would be massive favourites for multiple premmies, the Big O is that good of a ruck plus his ability to rest down back.

That's how you know how good of a job Lewy/Timmy did on Saturday night.

I don't think the big problem has ever been hitouts to advantage though. The big problem has been rucks grabbing it out of the ruck and getting it forward. That's much harder to defend against and it can lead to easy clearances. If the stats guru's could make a stat for grabbing it out of the ruck, I'd imagine we would be at the bottom of the list for grabbing it out of the ruck and at the very top for rucks doing it against us. It's why Big O was trying to grab it out of the ruck half the time and it probably contributed to the hit outs to advantage being low also. Big O destroyed Young in the 1st qtr doing exactly that.

Lycett is even more effective at grabbing it out of the ruck and it's why I don't see any reason why Young should be playing next week.

I’m prepared to gamble on Martin if it is a coin toss.

But it is a worry. Because we will be taking a punt on the Bont as well.

Often teams that take in too many injured or underdone players in a final lose.

I don’t know why. But I have a funny feel about this team, just that they are capable of doing something special. Even if it’s against the odds given player availabilities. Maybe it’s just because we witnessed 2016 and anything seems possible.

TBH I don't think the personnel ie who comes in is going to make a difference. They will get first use of the ball in the centre. Its what happens next that will decide the outcome.

The way I see it our only path to a win is through the team tactical approach adopted by Beveridge. I think we have to turn this into a stop start slog. Do whatever it takes to stop their run and flow into our forward 50.

Their key players are Boak and Wines. These players will have the opportunity to use the ball first. If they get going its all over red rover. Sacrifice one or two of our own tagging one or two of theirs, Dunkley on Boak for example

And the tackles must stick this time, every time.

that's going to happen whoever Beveridge picks to ruck. I would be instructing our midfield to sweat on the grab and lay their tackle hard as soon as its in his hands. Do not give him time to kick long out of the contest. As long as its not 30m out from our goal I couldn't care less if we gave away a free doing it.

Wishful thinking, but...
In: Martin, Garcia
Out: Young, Weightman

Leave JJ as medisub.
Could happen

In other Dogs news, Stefan Martin is firming to play after a solid training session in Tasmania on Saturday with teammates who weren’t selected for the semi-final.

There is no chance Hannan gets dropped.

I would consider Martin for Young. If Young is only touching the ball a few times a game, not sure how Martin doesnt at least match that

Its a fair comment, because the game stops for you if you are a ruck. Guaranteed involvement. Bev hates 'stoppage only' rucks but if the guy who is supposed to be making up for his lack of stoppage prowess isnt getting the ball around the ground, then its a double whammy

How about Martin in for Cody
Young as the med sub utility

Other teams were watching with interest when brisbane showed a way to nullify our midfield strength was to spike the ball out of the area and make it a chaos ball moving in their direction. Shades of Clark Keating

In this case it would actually be JJ for Cody, Martin for Young and Young as Medi Sub which yes sounds about right

Not worth a new thread, but I find the 2nd half of this video really interesting as Cornes points out position 'structure' related stuff.

In the Barkley St podcast earlier in the year Adz talked about how he’d shed the kilos to turn from an inside mid at the Pies to an outside one for us. I doubt he’s ‘spat the dummy.’ He’s lost confidence in himself & in his injury prone body I’d say.

Not to be harsh but the Pies were clear they wanted him off the books, whatever spin they put on it. There was a reason for it.

I’m willing him on to have a great game this week.

Is Treloar looking down the barrel of being dropped? We can't have another performance like that one. Virtually anyone from the 24th to the 30th ranked players would have done a better job or at least shown more intent. I hope in one way it's because he's having problems with something, either physical or mental, and that Bevo can sort him out, otherwise he's a liability.

If Bevo isn't at least considering dropping Treloar then its negligent.

Advantages Port have:

1. Healthy list
2. A week rest
3. Being able to sleep in their own beds
4. Not having to travel on 61378 planes and stay in a million different hotels, being served cold eggs
5. A decent ruckman
6. Playing a home prelim in front of their fans

Now, some of those things are due to us dropping out of 4th and Port winning the first week, of course. However, if they do actually find a way to lose on Saturday… it’s going to be a monumental loss for the ages. So, so much pressure on them. Don’t underestimate that.

It all starts and ends in the midfield. Dunks to tag Wines, Treloar to play inside mid and give us first use. If Port do decide to use Drew to tag one of Libba/Macrae, they will be sacrificing an inside mid. We bat deeper than them. With the form Libba and a Macrae are in, will tagging them even work? I’m getting Thor landing in Wakanda vibes from both.

Bont may be on one leg, but I’ll back him to play forward and negate Allir’s influence. Weightman won’t be playing, and more than anything, we need someone who can provide the energy and spark he can. Beautiful thing about a preliminary final is that anyone who comes into the team knows they are playing for a grand final spot. They will all provide the energy he can, even if they can’t match his skill level.

My grandfather passed away last year. While he wasn’t conscious when I went to see him that last day, I do remember the smile he gave in his sleep when I told him that the Dogs would win it for him. While the Dogs didn’t salute in 2020, they will this year. He was a member for 74 years. He knew another flag was close. Sometimes, you just need to know, to believe. All the Doggies players do. Let’s get it done! Go dogs!
