This is naive. Effectively, after Covid, this would be axing players after one game. Even if done, this would result in a team of tyros with no experience and no protection, which would achieve nothing. The coaches have to consider far more than dropping a slew of out-of-form players. They need to consider the team as a whole and its associated goals.

One would say that the same logic could have been applied to the pathetic from of Hawthorn's senior players last week, but it wasn't. That was a statement by the Hawthorn club by ignoring their form.

The issue is not about dropping players after one game of bad form. On the other hand, a string of such games by our lot would indicate that we have team-wide attitude problems just like the previous two years: this is the real problem that must be addressed. What is wrong with our mentality and desire? Pyke was absolutely right to address this, but perhaps chose the wrong method. It has not gone away. To me, it's all on the players to fix their attitudes.
Hawthorn are the best club in the league for responding after a bad loss. Their coach has a lot to do with it but its their culture that doesnt put up with bs. Comparing us to hawthorn should never be done. We have been shit for 2 years. What your missing is what was dished up last week was not only a pitiful effort but it reeked of players who don't care. Will tolerate a lot of things but not that. If Nicks is to keep his job longer than 18.months he must change that quickly. The only way to change it is to cut cancers out of the team like Atkins. The team needs to realise that the days of guaranteed selection are over and you keep your spot by performing. If you don't want to perform go elsewhere. Effort is a non negotiable.

“The difficulty in selection is making an assessment on what really is a one-off performance - with the form of Round One some 12 weeks prior having little relevance."

Words of Adam Kelly.

It's not a one-off mate. It's the same sh*t year after year.

not to them it’s not.

He's had his moments, he's just one of those guys who needs others to be performing well to be at his best, which with our current side makes him look absolutely awful

Why on earth do you want a bloke in your team that is dependent on being spoon fed. At what point is he going to stand up and make the play, be the first to get the ball and dish it out on a consistent basis.

Atkins is the perfect example of what is wrong with the AFC. For as long as we pick players like Atkins this club will continue to plod on field.

Every team has players like that.

It’s astonishing to me how many people have fallen straight into let’s back the boys.

What have people been watching the last 2 years.
Exactly.

The counter for underperforming doesn't reset every season

It's not just one bad game though is it?

It's a pattern of systemic failures by key players over many years

Remember when Laird was a complete desperado? And hit contested marking scenarios, going backwards as a 5 foot nothing and grabbing the ball. We don’t see that these days. He’s done, but I’m not convinced he’s to blame. I saw him fall over and give up last week. Our existing experienced players are all just rolling through their contracts.

Those that aren’t on their last legs need to be held accountable. As do the 28-30 year olds.

Nicks gets a pass this second week. But if we’re shit and he doesn’t shelve players or replaces them with old ****tarfs, he’s the problem.

I agree Laird (or Crouchs, Sloane, Smith etc) aren't to blame for this. They're all naturally rather competitive players who have had it beaten out of them after the last few years. There is no return for our senior players. That happened the moment they just gave up during the middle of 2019.

I wouldn't have given them a second chance, though the more I've stewed on that game/this week, I do genuinely believe they won't, or can't bounce back. The sad thing is if we trade them, the new environment might just spark it back and we have a Heath Shaw like situation on our hands for Laird where we watch him being a solid contributor/leader at an up and coming club.

Henderson’s ten times the player Atkins is..

Henderson at Adelaide is rather comparable, though injuries did play a role with Hendo. A few really good weeks and then inconsistent. Though his 2016 was pretty good.

If only we got rid of Mackay instead :(

Yep... If only!...

On Henderson... cant say i can ever recall many occasions, at either Adelaide or the Hawks, where I’ve seen him jogging around after his opponent.. see it nearly every single game with the Rat.. Rat’s easily the laziest player in the entire comp.

What do you think being put on notice means? 😳

On the way out from the lunch room a couple of senior players noticed an A4 sheet of lined paper taped to the wall at eye level .

It was indeed a notice from the selection committee ... it read :

All Senior Players , you have now officially been put on Notice .

As you can see , this action is having it's desired effect .

Red texta always does the trick .
