Last Key position player to do that?
Most KPP's don't even get a game in their first few seasons.

Phil Davis, Daniel Talia and James Sellar were all KPP's that got drafted in the first round by the Crows. Taylor Walker probably would have been a first round pick if he wasn't a NSW scholarship pick.

The total number of AFL games played by these highly promising players combined in their first seasons?

Zero. Not a single game.

If tex doesn't play it doesn't seem fair to let FOG play for a week and then back out again, at some point we need to let the kid develop through some continuity in his game time. In & out all over the shop aint going to help him!
I think you're overstating this. Fog's focus at this early stage of his career should be on fitness and training, if he gets an AFL game from time to time it's a bonus.

Most Phantom drafts had Walker going in the 20s, so probably a 2nd round pick. Of course, Phantom Draft writers don't always get it right.

Even still, I think my point about most KPP's, even the highly rated ones, not getting many games in their first year holds true.

The exceptions to the rule are generally at clubs like Carlton, where their current list is so shit, that they really have nothing to lose by blooding the gun KPPs right from the very start as they aren't challenging for finals, let along a flag, anyway.

That's what I was told in the SANFL thread.
interesting. I thought he'd be an obvious option as an in over Poholke if availability meant it wasn't a simple Betts for Poholke situation but agree it may be less likely if he hasnt played

Pyke did say that he had cemented his spot in the side before injury though so could be interesting

And it doesn't seem to do a lot for those players' development....

I agree with your point about KPPs not normally playing many games in their first year, but I wanted to touch on what you wrote about bottom clubs not having anything to lose by playing them early and a lot. Given what we've seen in recent decades watching perennial cellar dwellers operate, I'm not so sure that the sink or swim approach doesn't come with significant negative consequences. We've seen several highly rated prospects (i.e. high draft picks) fail to live up to their promise at these clubs, possibly because they weren't adequately prepared for the AFL before getting regular games, and I think that is a massive loss.

No doubt they rate Hampton, but I'd prefer to give Poholke another crack ahead of him this week. Although, I would like to see what Curtly has when not being played as a pure inside mid. Not that a destroyation of Carlton will tell us much.

I think we give the kid a rest. Has had two weeks. Plenty of things to work on back in the SANFL - now with a greater understanding of the speed of the game.

Showdown next week and we'll need his presence and leadership there.
I agree with the rest of your post but not this.
The team need his presence and leadership every game, Carlton or not, Showdown or not.
The selectors have to look only at fitness, because ...
We are slowly learning the benefits of going into a game with a fit squad.
If he's fit he plays, the end.

Even Carlton were smart enough to leave Harry McKay in the VFL for almsot 2 full years before playing him. 0 games in his rookie year, 2 in his 2nd and now up to his 3rd this year. Weitering is a bit of an exception because like Fogarty, he was fairly well developed physically as an 18 year old.

In for 2 weeks out for 1, in for 1, out for 2, in for 1-2? The club has already shown they wouldn't pick him over others in rd 3 & 5

I love Fog I want him to play for the record. but a player like him needs a block of footy i feel and he isn't getting that in either grade currently

If there is one area you can back the club - its our development of KPP. The club will bring FOG along nicely.

Think I'd be happy either way. If Dmac is injured then Hampton will likely get a crack in an outside role. If Poholke gets a 3rd against Carlton, then that's ok too.
