OUT:
  • unnecessarily long handball chains that invariably often go pear shaped near their goals or in the corridor,
  • eyes always first to locate the closest player in my vicinity to handpass to, regardless of whether they are under pressure or if it's the best option
  • zone defence in the back line on the kick out. It still doesn't work. We proved that when we went man to man once last night and it resulted in a turnover and a goal
  • backmen kicking back across goals from the pocket when JT and LJ were ready on the wing, only to go back to the pocket and kick to a 2 on one (Worner) anyway for a poorer result
  • playing Murphy too deep where he has shown to be one of our best at delivering into the 50 to leads.
  • poor delivery into the 50 ignoring leads and dropping it on packs where we are outnumbered for easy opp marks
  • picking a player like Banfield who adds so little when the Wombat is in the wings ready to cause chaos and goals/assists.
  • playing a depleted average bottom 4 team, getting ahead on the scoreboard, and still showing so little confidence in our suspect strategies that you feel like we are actually losing
  • umpires that are looking for every opportunity to call a highly technical, and rarely used free when the supporters just want to watch a free flowing game of football

IN:
  • playing fast, forward, and long like we did against GWS, Port, and Suns, and playing smart like we did against Adelaide locking the ball in our front half for most of the game.
  • Ras' pre-bye confidence
  • Wombat
  • Fyfe back to sub

I think we have been missing Wombat.
His dash & flair. And really lovely goal sense.
Don't want Walters back in if it means holding the young man back.
And Banners is our super sub.
If Banners is in, Fyfe should be out.

There is not a chance in hell that Fyfe will get anywhere near his golden days.
Fyfe & Walters are just very good backup.
Father time has worked his wicked ways..😭

Erasmus is just ordinary, could still be useful at this level but average is his ceiling.

Wouldn't get talked about half as much if he was drafted in the 50s.
You mean like Viv Michie? Drafted at 44 and was one of the most obsessed over players on the list.

The thing with Raz is, despite being a pick 10, he hasn't gotten nearly the same amount of opportunity that someone at that pick would typically get. Raz gets talked about because he is young and fills a need and the perception is that he hasn't been given a fair go.

I'm more worried about the fact we couldn't take marks inside 50 against Essendon. Putrid. Something is not right with our forward 50 in that we are not freeing up one of our keys to have a clean run at the ball.

Really thought we'd be done with this talk once Ryan Daniels said 3 different big Vic clubs in the finals race are looking at him.
I don't see anything there. Do you? If so what? Can't kick, not fast, tackles average, decision making is slow, awareness is minimal..

I'm not a recruiter, and I assume neither are you. If they're seeing something, I assume there's something to be seen.

My general answer is they see talent + hardworking character.

More like you refuse to see anything there.

He provides size, grunt work and youth. The latter means there is upside, maybe not that much, but he can still improve.

I watched him closely yesterday live and he does a lot of good body work at stoppages. Deft knocks and hand balls. A lot of this might go unnoticed. He had 7 clearances on the stats sheet and helped us win others. He is better around the ground in congestion than the more open centre bounces where his speed can be exposed.

His short kicking is decent. His long kicking is poor and his speed is poor. You could say the same about Dunkley.

His tackling is actually good when he can lay one, but he doesn't get in position to tackle enough and certainly needs to improve this if he wants to be a B grade Dunkley.

Also needs to move the ball quicker if he gets it in open play, but he is still young and adjusting to the tempo of the game. Jury is out on this aspect.

It’s not potting for the sake of it though. I just don’t think he’s been great this year, especially the last few weeks. And would hugely benefit from a sustained run at Peel - something he’s never done yet.

Meanwhile we have a guy like Davies who’s played almost 50 games for Peel. Or even a ready made veteran in McDonald.

When there’s other options available, I don’t think you need to be gifting games to anyone just because they’re young and promising.
Oh I'd love to see Davies get some more games. but Draper still looks ahead for mine. Can't wait to see Draper at 100 games. I think he could be genuinely good. KPDs take a long time to hit their peak generally. It this point of hos career I'm generally pleased with how he's being developed.

Last game I watched Peel McDonald was a forward. It was a while ago though. Has he gone back to defender again?

Darcy surely comes in if fit.
Walker too, but not sure he will be.
Pearce if he’s ready, but not sure he will be.
(I’m assuming switta not yet ready)

Not sure who goes out for Darcy? Maybe Fyfe or Ras?
Banfield out for Walker (to sub and Aish out fully)
Draper out for Pearce.

We’ll know more after the peel game.

Outs: Aish, Draper.
Ins: Darcy, Pearce (if fit)

Sub: Fyfe or Ras

I think Fyfe might get a full game in the midfield though - he was playing at half forward for most of the time against Essendon.

only other possible in is Dudley, not sure for who.

Probably most others need a couple of weeks of football at Peel first or more rest. Will be interesting when Walker, Walters, Switta and JOM are fit to so see what happens.

Might be someone defensive play on Wanganeen-Milera - perhaps Wagner or Banfield.

Draper did a pretty good job on Caddy. Large majority of Caddy’s possessions were gained on the wing. Only 4 inside fifty with one shot on goal.
You must be joking, Draper was beaten every time in the contest and the only he got a spoil was against his teamate in the third quarter Davies is a better competitor and has improved heaps over the past 12 mths, just needs a chance to prove it

I watched Draper as close as you can on tv last night and he was often either trailing caddy or not quite in the contest.
he may end up a player, but he’s not there yet.
It’s bad business having a guy like Davies on our list and not giving him a run of games to see if he has what it takes.
Not saying he’s this quality but there are shades of Sam Collins here

Banners was awful, he’s a defensive liability. 2 Essendon goals were directly from his turnovers… I cannot believe the purple tinted glasses some people have re Banners, he’s the worst player on our list not called Liam Reidy.
I obviously wear the same tinted glasses as the selection panel. I’m happy with that. If all of us here knew better we’d be in clubland and not keyboard jousting

Felt like Caddy was involved in a lot of Essendons scores even if he wasn’t kicking them himself.

Draper is frustrating because he’s a lot better than what he’s shown, and it’s not like he’s had any injury or anything to explain his regression. That Sydney game last year he was massive but he just looks like he’s lacking fitness and confidence atm. Even the first half of the Adelaide game I had him as one of our best on but it’s just been downhill since then.

Against Essendon, there were some patches, more so in the first half where we were sending balls in and they were whisking them away a bit too easily after the contests. The Bolton goal and Reid goals were quality small forward goals but I did feel like we should have done more with the loose ball, so I would hope Dudley gets a good game in against South Fremantle tomorrow. Maybe he was one of the few that went OK against St Kilda last time.

Draper has been poor but I'd give him a pass on Thursday's game, Caddy would be a nightmare to play on.

Caddy is younger and less experienced than Draper by a year. He’s exactly the sort of guy that Draper should be beating if he played to his potential he showed last year.

I’ve seen enough from Drapes to know that there will be a player there but he needs to go back and find form atm and we need to trial one of the other 2-3 young KPDs who have been stuck there for ages.

Draper is still not all that experienced. He's played 30 odd games. He's played worse games.

I'm going to kill Caddy's career right here.

I reckon he'll be a top 20 player by the time he's played 100 games.

I'm just hoping it's second year blues and not reversion to the mean.
