Brayshaw Darcy Serong

NOD Wagner Dudley

Sub : Erasmus

Out Draper Banfield

Why?

Ok, so our superstars remain - brayshaw, serong, bolton, jackson, treacy, cox, ryan, AP and clarke. (To be joined by young soon. 10!!! Have we ever had it this good?!)

Then there is Voss, Chapman, Amiss, Frederick, Switta, Reid that are locks.

Reality is that Sharp appears to be a lock too - plays an important role that noone else can play re big distances at speed with repeated sprints. He’s not going anywhere, gnash your teeth, spit your dummy all you want but longmuir et al have been unwavering in their support. (Wish he’d kicked that goal but!)

So time to drench a few posters with a dose to decrease urgency and stimulate planning for the finals!😁

In terms of the rest of the preferred B22 - which heavily influences the team for next week:

- Fyfe needs game time to be fit for finals. Simple. Far from bad thursday’s game. Way too early to say he’s past it which is what many of the same posters calling for JL’s immediate execution earlier this season are saying. Believe the selection committee will play him into form from here unless tired or injured.

- do you honestly think Darcy is not going to play whenever available? He’ll be back for every single game this season - except the ones where oppo ruck is either average or not a man mountain like Xerri etc. only way he will get match fit is playing games. we haven’t even vaguely seen whats possible when he gets back to his best and jackson thru the midfield. Giving him games critical to our final hopes. Jackson going down and him being unfit too disastrous to contemplate!

- driz to gamefit is critical for the team too - real point of difference thru midfield and wing. He’ll be played into fitness too every game possible.

- Worner is playing v well - few mistakes. no idea how they rate him vs walker? Guessing may be horses for courses re truly speedy forward gets walker else worner as the default.

- johnson and erasmus are the interesting ones for me - need games into both but think this is a secondary consideration to fyfe played into match fitness and young coming back in.

- banners and aish our “break in case of emergency” fillins - and both a-grade depth in this role.

- simpson straight into halfback … somehow… on his return. Guessing will take aish’s spot next season as small utility?

- can’t see walters getting anything other than a retirement game unless he proves me wrong in the wafl.

- can’t see a place for jom unless he is a smaller fyfe replacement when needed. Damn fine depth but.

- i would LOVe to know the real take on why Brodie doesnt get a game - hes the ultimate quality depth in his one role that never gets a game!

- i can’t see how sturt is going to force himself into the team with voss now well entrenched as one of the three talls? Shai, reid are locks for smalls, dudley and narkle both ready to go here and guessing in front of sturt. Only poss for a sturt comeback is if the selection committee drop frederick for lack of defence / involvement. But gees we would be going in tall then!

- OMac hard done by tbh. Played well enough to be on the fringes of selection but doesnt appear the openings? Davies still building. And time to let Draper have another pre-season - hes not fit enough, strong enough or seeing the game well enough to persevere with him this season. He is young, in a position that needs a bigger body - classic case of give him time.

- Narkle offers awesome depth - though it appears either him or dudley not both? Any chance of him going onto the wing?

- Nicholl, Riddle,Murphy, Delean, Jones etc depth and developing.

Best list we have ever had by a country mile - Mr Walls take a bos👏👏👏🔥
Johnson spends most of his time on the wing, he's not vying with Fyfe or Young for a spot.

Just feel like Fyfe has lost the last of his weapons; one touch ball handling. The amount of times he fumbled on Thursday was horrendous. Could be rust but even when his marking & contested work fell away you could always rely on his touch & vision and decision making all of which were sadly lacking.
I felt sorry for him which is a very sad thing to write.

Pav sounded somewhat shocked at the state of him. Not willing to kick the ball

The Fyfe scenario seems fairly simple to me - just play him as sub.

This may be a minor thing, but after watching roaming BT on Thursday night and hearing most of the players speak, it was plain to see that our team is mostly made up of kids who are nowhere near peak maturity yet. It's easy to forget given that they look and play like much older Men, but mentally and emotionally they're very much kids. Makes sense given most of them are in their early-20s - an age I was still dodging booze buses and creating a general nuisance of myself in society.

Fyfe really represents one of the few integrated minds at the club - given his age, achievements and experience. It makes so much sense now why our midfield fell off a cliff in 2023 after Mindy retired.

Keeping Fyfe in some form of an on-field role, as long as he can contribute, should pay dividends.
He provides a lot of input and feedback on the bench as well.

I’m willing to give him another game in starting 22 to see if he improves his game touch and awareness. If not back to sub and can play out the season as our sub. I really liked how he spoke and engaged with players as they came off for a breather.

I'm more worried about the fact we couldn't take marks inside 50 against Essendon. Putrid. Something is not right with our forward 50 in that we are not freeing up one of our keys to have a clean run at the ball.
Looking for the long kicks rather than the 100 bloody runs Amiss makes every freaking week.
Never rewarded

I’m pretty sure we’re the worst team in the league at 1v1 contests statistically. 27% is actually very high compared to other KPDs (for reference Taylor, Moore, Weitering, Wilkie are all between 9%-15%). Also for reference, Cox last year was going at 20% as our best 1v1 apparently.
Moore is horrific one on one. He relies so much on structure to support him.
Wilkie the same.
Weitering is the only one that is a rock

Worner shouldn’t be compared to Walker. Different roles. Walker will come in for Banfield and the team has better balance.

Draper is just very lucky he’s young because he’s getting the development get-out-of-jail card to get selected ahead of McDonald. He wasn’t really inspiring for Peel but clearly he’s first selected of any of the fringe defenders.

Sturt probably won’t even play this year.

I get hammered with dislikes every time I say to not play Fyfe or Erasmus.

Both of them are in a situation where the fan base needs to see them fail over and over before they are willing to let it go, I understand Fyfe copping this treatment but the special treatment fans give Erasmus just because he was an early pick is wild to me lol

Unfortunately the reality is they just aren't good enough right now.

Not quite sure why Banfield is the continued whipping boy of fans.

I’m not even a JL fan, but I support his selection of Banfield - he offers flexibility, commitment and consistency.

The other thing is team consistency is very important. Banners was not our worst tonight but keeping a group together is very important when you can

Johnson: love the kid, important we keep giving him games, but he got caught a lot tonight. Still need to keep getting games into him

Erasmus: same as Johnno.

Fyfe: important but just looked clumsy and slow. Didn’t really want to kick it and we didn’t exploit his marking prowess.

Aish: not much good putting him on after 3qtr time

Sharp: untidy tonight but his running ability is important and he offered a good outlet.

Dris: love the kid, untidy and fumbly tonight. Will be better for the run. Did some really good things but also just some poor skill errors ie missed set shot.

Draper: starting to look tired but loved his speed and Caddy is a serious talent

All the above I thought were below Banfield, but I don’t think they should be dropped as they still performed in patches.

Pearce needs to come in so Draper misses out

If swit comes in that’ll be for Aish

Darcy may get a look for Dris but that’s about it.

We now have some selection integrity. Basically you need to have good form.

I’d love duds in but I don’t know who for.

Fyfe back to sub next week.
Dris was so important in his first game back. Would be one of the last dropped in my view. I’m not sure how Fyfe even gets a look at the sub role. He was so far off the pace and even his handballs didn’t make it easy for his team mates. It could be just game time required but Dris showed how to come in and make an impact.

We have won 5 games in a row. I expect we’ll see:

Pearce (if fit) for Draper
Darcy for Aish
Fyfe back to sub.

Walker for Banfield I assume will have to wait another week or two. JOM started OK but did not run out the game well for Peel and needs more time. Walters ditto.

After having watched the game last night, Saints came clearly to play against Collingwood.

I get the feeling that Ross is giving this group a real whipping until the end of the season.

I don't think we'll dish out the percentage boosting thrashing that is in order quite just yet. We need to be diligent with next weeks game and play all four quarters.

After watching the game last night, they have all their senior players back and look very very good. Top 8 quality team. They would beat GWS and Gold Coast in current form. They also run extremely hard end to end, though that might just be appearance based on Marvel Stadium.

How can you not have Voss? He’s ahead of Amiss at the moment.
No Reid either. It is actually astonishing that we have in form, dangerous forwards. Other than Amiss and Reid most of them have come from bits and pieces of drafting (and Reid wasn’t drafted as a forward, but he is just so clever). Treacy the rookie draft, Voss and Dudley train ons, Switta and Freddie low in the draft.

Reid is ahead of Dudley and Walters. Aside from scoring regularly his score involvements and creativity are massive.

Walters is a long way off at the moment. I liked his PS game against Melbourne but that was back in early March. Three possessions and limited mins for Walters yesterday for Peel.

Not sure if he can get back to that level.

Dudley needs a big pre-season. Loved what he has bought. Even at Peel he looks dangerous and brings other forwards into the game. It’s his fitness that needs to continue to build. Has come a long way reportedly over the past few years.

Just watched the highlights of Pies v Saints. They seemed to be in it for far longer than I would have thought. Midfield did some damage.

Marshall was very good. Won’t be a walk in the park. Need someone to run with NWM. I can see Windhager going to Serong so will need support from Fyfe/Ras to get separation. Saints small forwards a worry. Walker would be handy next week.

Current form of one game? They were belted for 3 weeks, then of course fired up to beat us. Then they lost to Carlton, WC, GC, beat Melbourne, smashed by Dogs by 12 goals.

They looked OK last night and I think they have a lot of solid B grade players, but they don't have the top end A graders and we can't be losing to them twice in one year.
