Don't get why they stressed Murphy was the travelling
emergency, surely you don't drop a player to be the
travelling emergency as being the travelling emergency
does suggest that he is fit and ready to play if he is
required. Anyone else find this odd ?

Note- Travelling emergency. ( Had to type it once more)
Yeah it's nothing. They're essentially resting Murphy but if someone pulls out he's ready to go if required. It means another guy pushing for selection doesn't have to travel and then miss a game altogether.

He's also the club captain and unofficial coach, it's good for the boys to have him there. He was there for all of the finals last year even though he didn't play.

If you're gonna rest Murph why not leave him in Melbourne?

It doesn't make much sense my gut says omitted. Which in itself is kind of weird because I thought he was better last week than he's been in a while.

Really don't like Cloke and Redpath in the same team but we'll see how it goes I guess.

Because then we'd need to take a different emergency to Queensland, which would stop them from playing vfl.

And it might have to have been Dec Hamilton... that would not be ideal in a must-win game if someone actually did pull out at the last minute.

If you're going to rest someone actually rest them. Especially if it's at the expense of not playing a full strength side when you're in the midst of a fight for finals.

It seems very counter intuitive.

There's two possible ways this pans out:
1. We go in as named. This is likely. Bob gets rested and Hamilton doesn't have to miss the vfl game. That's a better outcome for the club than Hamilton travelling and not playing, while Bob stays home and doesn't play.
2. We make a late change, and Bob plays. This is unlikely. That's still arguably a better outcome than Hamilton playing his first game in a crunch match, as Bob will provide the team with much more. Presumably, the club has decided that Bob will be somewhat better off with his workload managed at some point. It's not that he absolutely can't play this week if we need it.

Clearly, this decision is most likely to be better than just resting Bob, while there is a small chance that it is only arguably better.

I feel like a lot of people haven't thought this through before having a knee jerk reaction to the situation. I must admit that I thought it was strange initially before considering the possible outcomes of the decision. Kudos to the club for being able to think about the pros and cons, rather than jumping to a conclusion.

I've always loved the "rest from the flight" talk. Yeah I'm sure that 2 hour flight is going to ruin a professional athlete! Doubt it has anything to do with actually playing a game of footy, that flights a killer!

A two hour flight is not exactly all that goes into preparing a game at AFL level.

The mental and physical preparation it takes knowing that there's a possibility that if someone pings a hammy you're playing the fastest most physically demanding team sport in the world is kind of intensive so I understand.

Exactly. A two hour flight to sunny Queensland in the middle of a freezing Melbourne winter - the horror!

For those of you who haven't caught on already, I'm making a joke.

Also how's that draft - McLean, Webb, Dale, Daniel, Cordy all playing.

Dalrymple got RIPPED on here on draft nite. We need talls and he drafted short people.

Less than 24 months later and 3 of them were premiership players. Incredible.

Cordy, Daniel and Mclean are so damn good.

Cloke and a Redpath have a good opportunity against some inexperienced and inconsistent key defenders.

Clay isn't the player I would have brought in for Murphy, as the Lions mids are front runners and his lack of pace might hurt us a bit defensively.

Just because Clay is slow (and I'm the first to criticise him by pointing out how his lack of pace to burn defenders on the lead has hurt us this year) but that doesn't mean he's slow or a poor defensive player inside forward 50. In fact I would go as far to say he's a very good defensive forward, lays a lot of tackles and was actually brought into the team to help quell the attacking half-backs from Brisbane. He knows how to run and apply pressure even without heaps of pace.

I wouldn't mind seeing Clay try to shut down Zorko and the Bont up forward as part of a 3 pronged attack

Sorry cannot agree with this, last year he was a great pressure player inside 50 making contests and tackling.

This year due to his poor preseason and off season, he had been close to pathetic at senior level. He till tries to pressure and do the same role as last year but due to him being underdone and not having a good preseason he chases hard but he just can't get to the players he's trying to chase down and he is like having another red or Cloke in the team but he doesn't have any of their marking attributes. He is like an undersized kpp with no speed who can't mark this year.
