I agree that it might send the wrong message, but this game really is a must win and Karpany isn't exactly a tackling beast.
Good point, but it's about closing down space/options when we turnover/lose a contest in the f50. It's about making it to contests on the wing and forming possession chains to escape with possession and field position. It's about supporting teammates. It's about not just physical pressure but perceived pressure. And Karpany would definitely provide more of these elements atm.

I guess my point is this could be a change that actually benefits our team and gameplan to the detriment of skill level, albeit skill from a senior player whose output is dropping more and more as the season progresses.

We don't want 10 changes. We want 4/5 tactical changes on all 3 lines to bring some younger, hungrier bodies in. It was Gaff, Darling and Shuey's blooding in 2011 that helped inspire us and our older senior core. Our reserves may not be as talented, but we need the energy.

Yeah I thought EMac had a decent game. Made a bit of a blue with that deliberate OOB but didn't lose too many one on ones vs Lynch and his disposal was reasonable

Was far from our worst today
I agree, Emac wasn't the worst, better than the latest effort or two from Barrass. Perhaps can stay in until Barrass returns to form/ until a game where there is no suitable match up.

No argument here, did some good things today, deliberate call excluded.

Good for Barrass to get a fire up him and reclaim his #1 spot.

O tackles LeCras, 0 tackles. When WCE needed the senior forward to stand up with Kennedy out it is not the goals or disposals it's the lack of work rate and effort to get himself out of the slump. 0 tackles.

Can't carry him anymore.

So what of the golden curly haired deity in the middle? Can we continue to carry him too?

I like your positive attitude.

Our squad doesn't have what it takes now, to get to top 4.

And before you throw at me last year that run to the finals or 2015 or whatever, face the hard facts of how the team is performing right now.

We're cooked.

If we make top 4 from here, I'll be shocked. And I'll remember this convo and apologise. :)
Yep like Simmo said we are a average side fighting for a top 8 finish.

As much as some on here want us to tank, we should still be reaching for the Top 4 and a win against Geelong is a must.

Karpany hasn't exactly showed an aptitude for the big stage, and Lamb is such an unknown quantity the risk would probably be too great.
Ummm karpany hasnt had a chance. give him games ffs. Same goes for a lot of the kids.

Drop butler, LeCras, Cripps and most importantly Priddis...

Bring in Mutimer, Lamb, Karps, Parto.

Rotate Nelson, Mitch, Yeo through half back and the middle, but most importantly play the youth through the guts as much as possible (where they are used to playing). Make sure there's one or two senior players in the middle with them when they're in there. We will not win a flag with this current list of mids unless the kids show us something, so it's time to find out.

Plenty of discussion about no plan B

Generally out game is based on:
  • good ball movement through the midfield
  • mid field pressure forcing look kicks into our defence to make best use of our marking etc
  • get the ball in quickly to dangerous forwards who seperate to split the opposition
When the first one fails the other two are in trouble.

Cats - what to expect. Quality strong inside mids clearing to powerful runners like Motlop kicking into an open forward line with no time offered to the defence.
We don't have the dangerfields inside or the run to keep up with the Motlops. This spells trouble.

What did the cats do to cut off the crows run and fast moment into an open forward line. they went man on man. could we? The are strong faster and more skilful (and competitive in contests) we will get cut up.

Who can offer Simpson a plan B that would work with our C grad midfield? Sad news Shuey is B grade or B+ over the journey - and he is our best.

Bit late to sack Woodhouse we just need to clean out his legacy.

West Coast, you finally broke me. Couldn't watch the last quarter knowing we would lose. First time I haven't watched any part of a game in over a decade.

WTF is wrong with this side? Should be contending but look like they really couldn't GAF.

I've posted about a lack of work rate shown by a player not trying to work himself into the game through hard work and tackling. You come back with a player that has had the most tackles in AFL history and another 5 today (behind only two team mates)... Interesting.

Well, right now, we have a 2 week break and the potential of a Lycett - Mitchell - Shuey - Sheed midfield, along with a number of changes and massive internal pressure from the coaching staff, which should produce something different.

We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Great post Jiggyman, Karpany may be that spark along with a couple youngsters, but in general, we play 100x better at home then anywhere else. Our skill level against a high pressure team like Geelong needs to be at its absolute best, and while the benefits of Karpany might outweigh LeCras inclusion, the fact remains his form lifts immensely on our home deck.

But I guess Karpany could make someone like Touhy more accountable, and could curb his influence.

It really is a more goals vs more pressure decision, just depends on what the MC thinks is more important.

Round one: North had it in their forward half for 80 percent of the first quarter. We were frankly smashed apart from on the scoreboard. They kicked 4.6 to 3.3 but at least 4 of those behinds were bad misses. If North kicked straight we could have found ourselves in real trouble.

Round two: Against St Kilda at home without Roo we only get over the Saints in the last quarter, another game where we were lucky as St Kilda kicked 19 behinds. If St Kilda had kicked straight then would we have won?

Round four: We play Sydney at home who were in the contest for a decent portion of the night, considering from that game they had no McVeigh, Rampe, Heeney, Tippett, Rohan, Jack.. Buddy on one foot...etc they gave us a very good contest. We were hardly convincing.

Round six. We defeat Freo. Probably our best win of the season based upon performance. Were up and going early in the first quarter but backed off for the last half. Didn't concede ground though.

Round seven: Good win against Port in terms of effort and intent however Port were pretty abysmal kicking for goal and had they kicked straighter or the game went for another 10 minutes we probably would have lost. They won all the key demographics that usually indicate a win except goal kicking. If it wasn't for us kicking away at the start of the third would we have won?

Round eight: Win against the Dogs with no Crameri, Cloke, Stringer, Murphy, Roughead, Wallis...etc only just got over the top of them.

My point being our wins have hardly been convincing and frankly we're lucky to have six of them on the board. Mitigating circumstances and all that.

Feel free to disagree with me but we have been dead set average for the whole year to and going on the season to date i would prefer we look to the future. To think we are still a top 4 side or a premiership contender is folly and i welcome anyone who wishes to argue the above with me.

Do you think i am being too harsh?

Out: LeCras, Priddis, Hutchings
MacKenzie
In: Karpany, Partington, Lycett (assuming he gets through, otherwise Lamb), Wellingham

B: Wellingham Schofield Nelson
HB: Hurn McGovern Sheppard
C: Gaff Mitchell Jetta
HF: Hill Darling Sheed
F: Cripps Petrie Lycett
R: Vardy Shuey Yeo
I: Butler Karpany Partington Duggan
E: Barrass Masten Mutimer

Don't see the point of bringing in MacKenzie just to make our backline taller and slower. He's out for Wellingham.

LeCras needs a spell, was invisible for the third week in a row. Karpany gets a recall.

Priddis has been a great servant, but his position in the team is based on the fact that his amazing ability to get us first use of the ball outweighs his lack of speed and dodgy disposal. That amazing ability has completely disappeared this year and doesn't look like coming back, so it's time to give some young blood a chance, either Partington or Mutimer.

Hutchings out for team balance as we missed having a strong marking target up forward. If we don't want Yeo in the backline then play him more in the midfield and bring in Lycett to back up Vardy with Petrie playing out of the square. Hutch played almost exclusively in a run-with role on Ablett, but since he was BOG I think he's expendable.

We need more players that can corrall. **** this tackling shit, wave your arms in the air and let the opposition take their time to choose a target.

This

It's a harsh accusation but there really does appear to be a lack of genuine fight from the club. No passion

Wtf happened to the "Time to Hunt" attitude that helped drive us to a GF in 2015

Today's game was an opportunity to make a real statement and they barely gave a whimper

Also two of our best today were 34 yr old imports who both showed a lot of heart for the contest .

You are correct mate. I've been saying the same thing all year. We have been very lucky other teams didn't kick straight or we'd be 2-7 or something like that. The coaching staff however live in la law land and think we are a chance fir a flag.

Trade darling to the Tiges for Dustin Martin. That's the change we need to make asap.
I'd spontaneously combust with excitement

Love watching Dusty

Perhaps Simmo has lost the playing group?

What I'd like to see:

Outs;
Priddis - Time to go, just taking up space, those kicks are bad. Leave Hutch in (try him as a non tagger), leave Sheed in there getting more minutes which is always good and maybe try Mutimer or Partington.
Duggan - Want him to do well, really want him to do well but either change his role or get rid of him, Masten would offer more run, would **** up those handballs just as well, and at this stage is a better kick. Karpany 13-15 touches is more damaging. Seriously what's his ****ing role? He's just floating around doing nothing and has no direction
Emac - Just think Barrass is the way forward and is a better kick, Emac burnt a few good leads today because he can't hit someone even with 5m separation.
Lecras - People love to bag him for no reason but today it was fully deserved, fumbled every single ball that came his way and didn't have anything to back up his goalless effort

Ins;
Karpany - I know he's not a forward but Lecras was shit today
Barrass - Straight swap for Emac, just a brighter future
Mutimer - Didn't disappoint played out of position, wh not try him in position (Priddis' place)
Masto - yeah, no improvement left in him but he gives more than Duggan at this stage
