Watching Bruce a fair bit live in the last few weeks, he is definitely competing. He’s just not clunking them, nor getting much help from the other forwards.
In saying that - he is fat. But so am I, so good luck to him.
I find it odd people are saying he isn’t trying hard. To me it seems like he is competing really well and flying at contests. He seems to be getting his hands to the ball but they are just not sticking. Every game he could easily have 3-4 contested marks but for whatever reason he isn’t coming down with them.

He’s definitely a number 2 forward so hopefully with Naughton back he can play more of a natural game rather than simply creating a contest for our midget forward line.

The delivery from our mids has been atrocious. Josh Kennedy wouldn’t be able to kick a goal at full forward in our team. All we do is bomb high and long. It could be a game plan issue, or is could be a personnel issue.

agreed. He is trying his guts out but just not in the best shape. Getting double teamed the last few weeks didn't help, looked a bit more likely this week with Naughton back. (even though he spudded his first contest)

Needs to work hard in the off season.

I have to be honest, I'm a little bit surprised at how furious people are after that loss. There were some really yuck moments, sure, but I thought it was overall a step forward. We were beaten by a better team. The momentum ebbed and flowed, and the defining factor was that they were more fluid than us when they had the momentum. Too many times we gave the ball back and a number of times they created opportunities through sensational play that was difficult to defend. The lapses around the contest are frustrating but more indicative of how exhausted English is and how overworked our on-ballers are. I don't understand why we refuse to address this.

I would like to see Cav and/or Greene in but to be honest I feel that the team we put out on the park against Brisbane is sadly close to our best side. For that reason I would keep it simple.
Out: English (managed), Gardner (omitted)
In: Trengove, West/Cavarra

FB: Williams - Keath - Wood
HB: Daniel - Cordy - Johannisen
C: Lipinski - Bontempelli - Macrae
HF: Lloyd - Naughton - Vandermeer
FF: Wallis - Bruce - Dale
R: Trengove - Dunkley - Liberatore
I: West/Cavarra - McLean - Richards - Smith

I would drop Gardner and go smaller down back this week, but expect Bev to keep the faith with him given his presser. Smith and English should have been rested last week, they are both completely cooked. I would still rest English despite the eight-day break, but think Smith should be ok. McLean played an awful game and I wouldn't be surprised to see him out again, but I'd like to give him the opportunity to play through a game like that as he is rarely afforded that chance. Trengove is the logical replacement for English, while West/Cav will hopefully bring some pressure and pinch hit on-ball (though that's unlikely given we're allergic to playing anyone outside of our best four mids in this position).

As an aside, I have all but given up on Ed Richards. His game is developing in many ways and he has some clear strengths, but you simply cannot be a low-production, small outside mid that cannot hit a target in a paddock. He has given the ball straight back to the opposition on easy drives at least five times in the past two weeks and that's indefensible. Unfortunately, I'm not convinced we have a better option right now, but I'm certainly low on confidence that he ever becomes the player we need him to. My hope is that he's just exhausted.

Pretty hard to argue against any of this. That lapse in the 2nd quarter was horrific but we were solid for most of the game. Brisbane are a good side and it was on their home deck, they are very difficult to beat at the GABBA.

Hope Cavarra gets an opportunity. Also I have no faith in Richards also. He's nowhere near my best 22.

If Gardner plays this week and tex kicks a bag in his current form that'll just about to it for me.
Unfortunately I see it as a huge possibility. In a year where football is all I have to look forward to it sucks that it adds more of anxiety rather then a distraction.

Maybe we should just change the name of this thread to "changes for 2021". There's only 4 games left. We might win half, maybe all, but we know we're only a good middle of the road side who can't match the stand out teams. Even getting in the final 8 won't be anything to get too excited about. I think a big part of our problem is we make too many changes and haven't had a chance to let our best performing team consolidate. Not only Bevo's fault when there's been injury and Hunter's issues. We're constantly plugging holes and moving players out of their preferred position (e.g. Bont here there and everywhere). Players like McLean are in and out like a rotating door. I'd like to see the players play in their preferred for the rest of the season. Just leave them there regardless.
So for 2021, what do we need and where do we get them?

6 games left unfortunately

Changes I'd like this week not the changes I expect. Taking into account the wrap up from scratch matches that the MC loves so much
Out: wood Gardner richards lipinski Lloyd English
In: west khamis Dickson cavarra Greene sweet

Fb. Williams keath khamis
Hb. Daniel cordy McLean
C. Vdm macrea dale
Hf. West naughton Dickson
Ff. wallis Bruce cavarra
R. Sweet libba bont
Int dunkley Greene b.smith jj

I can't get on board with throwing the season while we still have a decent chance of making finals.

We just got through the toughest patch of our fixture for the year, lets see how we do against some other sides before throwing it in.

It back my team in to win against the one fielded last week. Khamis is equal to Gardner. Sweet is equal to the burnt out English and the rest are upgrades

Based on the scratch match report, I’d probably like to see these changes.

Out: Gardiner, Dale or Lloyd
In: West, Cavarra

Richards to move to play as the 7th defender.

I don’t think we can carry both Lloyd & Dale in the same team. Take your pick which one goes out. Lloyd is probably playing better but has less of a future.

Good to see Cavarra kick a few in the scratch match. I’d really like to see him get another crack given that Pies game was especially horrible for our forwards given our complete lack of inside 50s.

We really have no excuses here with Adelaide having three days shorter break then us. Talia will be rested against the pies so he is fit to fave us on sunday

Is that confirmed? I gave the Crows a sniff tbh. If Talia ain't playing, that swings it back well into Magpies' favouritism.

Lachie Hunter needs to stand for something and help his team mates out.
If he decides to opt out of this game he can move club for all I care.
This bloke has copped nowhere near enough heat that he deserves.

Lachie can’t play

At 5 and 6 Bevo would not being giving up on the season. However with a poor percentage we would need 10 wins to make the finals. Highly unlikely on current form but we could beat
Crows
Dees
Hawks
Freo

We would need to beat the cats and cannot see us beating the eagles

So this week Gardner is a must out. I would also drop Lipinski, Lloyd, Richards In Sweet, Dickson, West, Hunter

Without knowing the full story, Has he opted out due to personal issues?

Or is the club banning him from playing?

Not allowed to play even if the club or he wants. AFL ruling is what I’ve been told.

I have not been told the reason but I have an assumption I will not say on here because obviously it’s only a guess and it won’t be popular

I've almost given up on seeing Hunter this year

Very troubling I hope for hunters sake and to a much less extent our sake that you're wrong and he has got him self right both mentally and physically and is ready to go

Something does seem off about the whole situation. Particularly concerning considering other players who have had indiscretions have been able to return and play.

He should be fine but I’d doubt we see him this year. I’m one that doesn’t think he makes us that much better so on a footy View I’m not that bothered he isn’t playing

Fergus Greene (hand) – test
Josh Schache (groin) – test
Hayden Crozier (toe) – 1-2 weeks
Taylor Duryea (quad) – 1-3 weeks
Lin Jong (ankle) – 2-4 weeks
Matt Suckling (ankle) – 2-4 weeks

My theory on English;
Training restrictions mean he cant learn what he needs to learn by not playing senior footy, even still is rucking against Sweet or Trengove at training really going to prepare him for Gawn and Grundy? Playing a quarter in scratch match for a run wont either. He has a tank, he has the hands, he has the ground ball skills...He needs as many centre ruck contests against AFL ruckman as he can.

Yeah, he wont be as effective and yeah it might cost us right now, but I'd say they see it as short term loss for long term gain.
