Really no idea who should come in and out. But I would like one more tall back and one less forward. Our success against the Pies has come from frenetic forward pressure, so one tall forward, Stringer & Crameri, then three high pressure forwards.

I reckon Daniel will be out for sure. Shirked a contest, it looked terrible and there is no way Beveridge will stand for that regardless of how old you are.
what contest was this?

Tell me ....... was Campbell more influential as a ruckman yesterday than Ayce Cordy was during his experiment as the ruckman?
Much, much, much better in the ruck contests (but admittedly that isn't difficult). Had less of a defensive impact on his man, didn't get to as many contests and didn't contribute to the zone as well as Ayce did, however. Overall I believe he was significantly better but their respective impact comes in different areas of the game.

Do we have a ruck coach? I'm staggered at the idea a professional ruck man would not know where his mids were or would not have communicated what he was going to do. And if it happened several times that the tap went straight to the opposition, why would you keep doing it? And if our players are setting up but not receiving the ball, are they communicating what the problem is to the ruck man? Are our mids not good enough? There seems to be a lack of on field leadership here. The hall mark of the Hawks is that they coach themselves in so far as they can see a problem and have the leaders to try to rectify it on field.

I was surprised when Campbell was subbed off because at that stage I thought he had been doing a reasonable job both in the ruck and around the ground. There were others who were having less of an impact than him. For example, my future star Bailey Dale had hardly had a touch and didn't look like getting any better either.
I agree that Campbell must direct his hitouts much better because they are easily sharked by opposition players. To me, most of his hitouts are too shallow, directed almost down near his feet which makes the contest a 50/50 rather than an advantage to us. Hopefully, he is still learning the art and will improve. Unless Minson is fit, I would give him another game at least,

In fairness, it was his first game for the year. I have no doubt he would improve if he got an extended run, and would be much better at getting the ball to his VFL mids.

I'm flying over for another game fellas, picked an absolute ripper too potentially! Pies have some big outs which will help us especially without Koby, Sid and potentially Mitch. Can anyone tell me what Bev's exact comments were regarding Wallis? Hopefully if just a sore back, an 8 day break and light training load can help him recover in time...

Beveridge's comments about our midfield lead me to believe he will look to bring Jong back, after 2 full VFL games he should be ready and raring to go again, NEED early season Jong badly.

In:

Jong, Hamling, Talia

Out:

Campbell, Prudden, Moyd (rest)

Moyd a rest only as Bev rested him twice early in the year with general soreness and he's played a few games in a row now, so can rest him and keep him fresh for the end of year slog / potential finals games. Don't want him getting any calf issues again. We get a more traditional defensive setup with Hamling and Talia as key backs, Morris 3rd tall and Wood being able to drift across freely. Roughy no.1 ruck on Grundy which is a good matchup for him athletically and Toyd provides the chop out. Jong potential X factor and needs to give us grunt in the middle.

Edit: Hunter gets a full game also and Dale starts as sub.

On a warning or potentially in the gun for next week : Crameri, Grant (a little harsh but has to keep playing well), Toyd, Hunter and Dale (both need to have an impact)

Yeah could be that he hasn't had the chance to get in tune with the mids yet and vice-versa. A lot of the taps appeared almost thoughtless on Saturday.

The elephant in the room is the forward line simply hasn't worked with Redpath and Boyd together. IMO it is one or the other not both.

I personally would prefer we played Boyd. He looks to have more up side and the club has committed to him enormously in contract terms. Redpath should be played only if Boyd is injured or has been dropped back to the VFL to regain form.

Playing them together as we have done not only hurts the team short term in terms of poor forward output, it potentially causes long term problems because Redpath is actually displacing Boyd from his natural position and contributing to his drop in form.

Whilst Redpath is playing ok, I don't think he is playing well enough that his personal output compensates for the overall drop in how the forward line has functioned following his inclusion.

If we were to rest Boyd I wouldn't be doing it this week - in terms of making finals this is our biggest game of the year. If we win this game we are in the box seat

I think we can play the current forward line if we only play one ruck. That is we play only one of Roughie, Minson, or campbell in the team. That way we still have structure with redpath when Toyd goes into the ruck. However this plan involves having tall defenders in the team like talia, hamling and roberts, so Roughie can play ruck-fwd, not defense.

The other thing that is hurting us is that Dahl is our best crumber and has been forced into full time mid.

IN: Hamling, Roberts (If Fit), Webb and Hrovat

B Morris Roberts Wood
HB Murphy Hamling Johannisen
C Dickson Bontempelli M.Boyd
HF Dahlhaus Redpath Grant

Then we compromise our ruck situation, and Boyd, to accommodate Redpath.
Unfortunately, his output to date simply doesn't warrant such accommodations.

People talking about Campbell's game are conveniently forgetting he's notorious for not having the fitness base to run out AFL games. Some of his past last quarters in the games he's played he's been terrible.

It's a good thing he was subbed out, his lack of mobility being further exasperated in the last quarter by his lack of fitness should he have played out the match. It would have been ugly.

Roughy now clearly doesn't work in defence, and he's a better ruck than Campbell. Minson comes in if fit, if not, Roughy and Boyd to ruck in tandem.

This is a fair point - I'm not a Redpath hater and I want him to do well and rate him, but Prof is right - that means our balance of forward line/big man structure is based around Redpath being our full time number 1 key forward. He's done nothing in his games at AFL level to warrant that.

Maybe I've been watching another game but on form I would put Redpath ahead of both Boyd and Stringer on form (excluding Stringer's last qtr v GC).
Agree 100% big red has offered more than Boyd over the last two weeks and for me Boyd isn't creating the contests he was early in the year whether he's sore or ou of puff he isn't bringing the ball to ground is more often getting out marked these last few weeks

Structurally I'd like to see:

Out - campbell
In - Minson

Out - redpath
In - hamling

Hamling goes to white. Morris takes Moore.

Roughead plays forward/ruck and can go back if Grundy or witts start marking the ball.

Not sure about the runners/mids, but I'd like to see Webb in for prudden as a minimum.

On the wing, in front of the away team coaches box right in front of where I was sitting. All the Bulldogs supporters around me groaned and a even a few Cats supporters too. Possibly in the last quarter?
It was the 3rd quarter and the blame should be put squarely on Jake Stringer. The overlap was on and he did a casual left foot kick which did not hit Daniel on the chest, wasn't even close, forced Daniel to run onto a ball with tall player bounding down at him. Not the best effort but an all too casual pass from Stringer as well.

Updated changes - Didn't realise White pointer was out for a significant time

Ins
Jong
Talia
Webb
Hamling
Hrovat? If Wallis is out

Outs
Prudden
Campbell - stiff but want roughy back into main ruck
Dale
Hunter
Wallis?

Actually early in the last.
