So what are predictions for the game? A lot of people think it will be a cakewalk. But I think it's a danger game.

Giants are missing a few players. Mumford being the biggest loss. But they still have a lot of dangerous players. Especially that forward line!

Petrenko must be in the bottom 5 players getting a game this weekend. Nationwide.

No Grigg is ridiculous but depressingly unsurprising.

They will tire and we will shit it in and all will appear swell until we play a top 8 worthy team again

B&F standings alone mean little, it's all about votes per game (given an adequate sample size).

Structure my arse, there should be no way Grigg is missing this week, or last for that matter, given he was supposedly fit to play.

Brodie Smith please. Can clear the danger zone in one swell kick!

MJ as a back up option if Brodie is resting

Unless I'm mistaken, they seem to be operating the kick ins like a game of Volleyball - man number one takes the kick ins, and keeps them until he makes a mistake. Then man number two takes over repeats the process - with Jaensch, Smith and Reilly the 3 men in the group, all of them with a kick long enough to clear the 50 arc if the long bomb is necessary.

I notice Mackay is named on a Half forward flank. It is a hard position to play, but I like Mackay there. I think he could be quite the opportunist. He can make the most of a tight situation, dispose of quickly under pressure, find or create space, and can give of an effective short pass. He can also work up the ground where needed and bring the ball forward with some run and carry. I personally believe that this is probably his best position and a good one for team balance and structure because we have had too much of just bombing it long into the forward lines or kicks to one on ones without putting it to advantage in the past. I will be watching him closely to see how he goes there and if he can back up last weeks form. Its not just about goals, but also goal assists.

GWS have shown they are competitive this year, even when they have had injuries. They will have some pretty awesome talent on the ground, although not all of it yet fully mature. If we win comfortably, I believe it shows we are genuinely starting to build. If we have a close win, the jury is still out. If GWS wins, Bigfooty.com goes into meltdown and along with it a lot of our footy hopes for the year. My tip, Crows by around 30; but tipping, like our great game, is so unpredictable.

Grigg has never been particularly quick. That was one of the main reasons why he slid in the draft, allowing us to draft him in the first place. Dominating the SANFL isn't necessarily a sign of anything - Lyons is too slow for AFL and he has 8 clearances and 30-odd disposals every week in the SANFL. Similarly, LJ will probably win the Ken Farmer medal this year, despite having a work ethic well below that expected of an AFL player.

You might have noted that I put a question mark after my proposition that he was too slow or lacking endurance. I'm definitely not saying that this is the case, I'm postulating that it may be the case, looking for an explanation why a promising kid is clearly on the outer at present. He was dropped last week and wasn't selected again this week (granted he didn't play a game last week to make a case for reinstatement). There has to be a reason why he was dropped - and it's not injury, according to Harper/Noble. If it's not pace/endurance, then what is it? That's not intended to be a rhetorical question, I'm open to alternative suggestions.

You stated that he "doesn't have the same zip this year". I agree - hence why I suggested that he may have been lacking pace.

My theory...

He's always been very slow. He has said before he is in the slowest 5 goals at the club. I think last year he played more across the wings.

In the current structures, the whole middle of the ground is congested. This disguised his lack of speed as he was in congestion but has a very good side step so we didn't really see his lack of straight line pace (because there was no space for it). Now with him predominantly playing as a high half forward this year, there is often more space and times where he is chasing his opponent out of our forward line and we can see his lack of pace on show.

I think he can play either role well, but there just needs to be some other quick guys around him ie if in forward line Betts & eventually Cameron. If in midfield, Danger & Smith are the players around him with speed.

we should win and win well

we are getting players back and GWS are missing key midfield and defensive players

most teams would struggle to cover the loss of Mumford, Shaw, Shiel, Palmer, Whitfield, Mohr and Davis let alone a young list

Matt Crouch is the last name on the bench, ergo Matt Crouch is the sub. That's the way our team sheets work.

Our team sheets aren't always showing the sub as the last man listed on the interchange, not sure where you came up with that myth.

Going to be very interesting when they are both ready. Who gets dropped?
I reckon Otten will get 2 weeks in the SANFL and come back for the Melbourne game... maybe Reilly drops out for him? But then I would like Grigg in that spot off HB to use his elite leg...

Have no idea who will go out for Tex.

Noble explained that he was dropped. Could have played last week but they opted for extra leg speed...
He was still quite clearly injured with a bad corkie the week before as well, no need to risk him regardless. The fact he didn't play SANFL either says he was definitely carrying some sort of niggle.

That's because we played Sunday and he became the travelling emergency

That's because they were hoping he would still get up on the Sunday, so of course he traveled to Melbourne. As someone mentioned earlier, I think with Jaensch playing so well he's taking that spot on the HBF we had lined up for him. As much as I want Reilly out of the side, I would prefer to replace him with a more like for like in Otten.

I think he's just been squeezed out because some of the fringe players like Mackay and Jaensch that play in a similar role have had good seasons so far. He'll inevitably play more games with us this season, but just not right now.

Yep.. he moved him forward, then to the interchange bench. Sando loves him. You keep telling yourself that.

Um, Vader don't let the facts get in the way. Laird started on the bench last week and then came on in an early rotation into the forward line. This week, oh look, he's been training with the forward group and is starting on the bench again.

I don't think he will play any more games unless our love affair with Petrenko and Reilly ends. Or we jettison Matt Crouch.
