We need to draft a kpp/ruckman type but unlikely they will be ready to play many games next year.

I'd strongly suggest the better option for us will be to trade for one. Lycett the first priority. Gorringe 2nd. Giles 3rd.

With our first couple of selections in the draft we need to focus on the best available, with a slight bias towards outside speedy types and key defenders over inside midfielders and forwards.

Laird's first game back. Doubt we will be dropping him - let alone for Reilly.

Except that Reilly wasn't Omitted, he was dropped for "general soreness". I'd expect him to come straight back in. I don't necessarily think he should be, but that's what I see them doing based 1) on who we're playing and 2) who the coaches currently seem to think is best 22.

Reilly only returned to the side because of injury. The selectors no longer consider him in the best 22.

Lynch is a third tall. The coaches have essentially gotten rid of a mid for another key forward/swingman in pods. We are playing three BIG forwards

There are no stay at home types anymore, this isn't 1980. All the forwards rotate positions and swap opponents. Walker will be deep at times, jenkins will be in the ruck, lynch will be deep at times, its how the game is played.

Lynch is the definition of a third tall to compliment two KEY forwards. Gunston, winderlich and goodes the only ones better at this stage.

My two biggest concerns are this;

1. Tex is getting most of his touches/shots on goal from 40m+ out and not spending enough time out of the square. So many times you expect tex to be there when its kicked in, but its usually pods or betts
2. Our future forward line of walker, jenkins, lynch and betts aren't getting the chance to gel with each other

1. Tex was playing down the ground in 2013. Well further out than 40m.

2. The forwards are geling just fine. Jenkins to Betts deft tap.

3. Pods isn't stealing Tex's ball.

4. You wide of the mark.

Fair to say that we would be lower than 9th without Pods

Being facetious?

Sorry, then read the rest of the thread.

Another mid would provide more benefit than Pods.

I also don't understand why Pods is the FACE of the AFC website during the games, on the big screen? We've got kids like Talia, Smith, Walker, Danger, Sloane, Jacobs, Crouch etc - WHY IS AN OLD MAN WHO HAS BEEN AT OUR CLUB FOR FIVE MINUTES BEING USED IN A KEY MARKETING AD CAMPAIGN?

Reid at Sydney.

Reid is really a key position player, a good second key forward. Sydney would be a better team if they had Buddy, tippett, goods, mcglynn and jetta as the forward line, without reid. The only reason they are playing him is because they don't want him to leave.

He has kicked 9 goals this year, and hardly hasn't got more than 15 touches once.

Works fine for Sydney. It works as long as your big guys can fill other roles. Pods stays until the coaches are confident that Tex can hold his own, which he cant currently, and also until Charlie is fit to resume.

At this stage neither looks likely until next year. At that point I would imagine Pods will start his coaching and playing in the SANFL. If we are having this discussion at round 3-4 next year then we have a problem.

Did you even read what you typed out loud?

If have a better fwd line without him, they wouldn't be playing just as a disincentive to leave.

It must be school holidays or something. ......

Spot on. It really shouldn't be that hard to understand.

I never said anything about pack marks

the reason why We get away with playing tex, JPod, JJ and Lynch in the same forward line is because Lynch does not play as a third tall no matter how you dress it up he plays more like an extra midfielder

Most 3rd talls in the league can either take a contested mark or are very good on the lead from deep within the forward 50m however neither of these attributes are Tommy's main strength

As I said earlier Lynch's weapon is his work rate and gut running and this is why many of his goals look soft because he just out works his opponent both ways. This role in the modern day is called a high half forward however is not always played by a player of Lynch's height

I think you will find that the coaches are keen for Lynch to do most of his work outside of the forward 50 and play like an extra midfielder however not like any midfielder but one of those rare breeds like a Fyfe, Goddard or Embly who have some height to go with their tank and this combination makes it so difficult to match up on and they have the ability to impact all over the ground

Lynch is not a 3rd tall, he is an extra midfielder

You have absolutely no idea

Do you even understand how forward lines work these days, players rotate constantly. Lynch is a perfect third tall in todays modern game

Pods is being played for two reasoned; to supposedly provide cover for tex during the time it takes to return to form, and because he is sandos best mate. In any other team, they would go with walker and jenkins, and lynch as the third tall

Most 3rd talls in the league take a contested mark? Lynch was in the top 5 players in the league for one on ones last year. He is also averaging 1.3 contested marks per game this year. Which is a higher average than sam reid, lachie henderson, david hale, jamie elliot, jeremy cameron, spud viceroy, liam jones, gunston, jenkins, dawes, darling.

A lot of those guys are KEY forwards, not third talls. Yet lynch isn't a third tall because he doesn't take contested marks....good stuff:thumbsu:

Nobody takes marks on the lead out of the square these days besides key forwards or freakish players, there isn't enough space. Most goals are scored on the burst, and getting your opponent on the way back to goals, the game has changed.

Lynch is a perfect third tall for us, Gunston and Goodes are the only other two i would take over him

The high half forward is played by gunston, goodes, lynch, reid, winderlich, menzel, monfries etc.

The only time it isn't a third tall playing that role is when the team only plays 2 tallish forwards, or don't have the cattle to play a third tall in the position. St.kilda, collingwood, Freo, melbourne, richmond don't have that luxury

Goddard, fyfe and embley did not play high half forward/third tall. They are midfielders

Out: laird/martin
In: Reilly

Thompson probably the most likely to miss out of the injured players, going by the fact he didn't finish the game. So lyons would come in for him

Hawks won last year's flag with buddy, roughy, hale & gunston as forwards.

Sydney are this year's flag favourites & play buddy, Reid, tippett & goodes.

Crows' forward structure of tex, pods, jj & lynch similar.

Would there be all this noise if tex was in his best form?

Different players, we are much less mobile

Buddy, roughy and gunston can really move well and are mobile

and for sydney, buddy, goodes and reid can move well and are mobile

For us, Lynch and Jenkins can move really well and are mobile, but walker and pods rarely get on the move like the rest of them. Both of them need to stay inside 50 to do damage

In what position exactly? Because Henderson and Jaensch have the rebounding half bank flanks covered. Brown the lock down back pocket.

Sando creates positions for his old golden passes.

Laird/martin will drop out for reilly
Martin will probably be dropped, laird to move into his position, or the sub again

I don't want it to happen, but it probably will

I quite like the structure we are going with now. Jenkins/Pods/Tex/Lynch/Sauce all play different roles and the sum of all parts is working. IMO Lynch is not a key forward, but basically a tall forward flanker. Bit like Porps circa 2009.

Pods is definetley still in the side to cover/assist Tex in his come back from his knee injury. I said a while ago anything we get from Tex this year is a bonus and the grind of weekly footy is starting to have a toll on him in his comeback. Taking Pods away would expose Tex even more. Look to Robbie Gray from Port to see how a player comes back from such an injury. Last year he was good enough to be in the best 22 without starring, but this year is probably their best player, or at least the one who plays at his best most weeks. I am looking forward to Tex version 2015 and beyond. Dropping Pods now would be madness.

Whilst watching the WCE game today I was thinking it would be a good get to have a guy like Lycett in the side. I would basically replace Pods with this player for next year. Have Sauce play up forward more and the other Ruckman be the more traditional Ruckman. Sauce, like Pods, can play up forward and is more than handy at plugging holes in the backline and is a good link up man in the middle. He can then also Ruck to relieve the other Ruckman. The knock on here is that Jenkins is then a sole forward, as Pods does not Ruck now. This Ruck player would be my number one candidate to recruit this year. However I highly doubt it would be Lycett as he would most likely end up at Port with strong ties to the club, he did have his 21st birthday at The Port Club.
