Take the best two mids out if any team (other than, maybe, the Bulldogs), and the depth that comes in is going to look shakey. It's not really a fair comparison.

I agree with your overall assertion that a dedicated defensive mid will be beneficial in the absence of Shuey and Yeo.

As a corollary to this, while getting Kelly looks like a masterstroke now, the intention of the trade was for him to play alongside the other two, not instead of them. If we can have all three fit and firing at the pointy end of the season, we will be hard to beat.

If every team had their best 22 on the field then it would be a tipping nightmare. Those with depth and better development, planning, and recruiting win in the long run. I think we are hands down A+ when it comes down to backline and forward in terms of talent, depth and development. We have massively underperformed in middle since the golden era of Kerr, Judd, Cousins, Fletcher, Stenglein, Priddis, and co. using your rationale, let's look at some top teams/contenders without their best two mids,

Richmond Dusty, Bolton, Edwards, and Prestia. They have enough to cover if they lose two of them.
Ignore Dogs and Demons as they are stacked with mids.
Geelong- winning at the moment without Danger and Duncan.
Lions- Neale, Lyons, Barry, Raynor.
Port- Boak, wines- they have enough talent to cover them.

The point I am making is we are extremely thin in this department and basically last year's missing out on top 4 came down to having almost no first-choice midfielders to compete. The difference between our starting mid to our second tier is far greater than other contenders. that is the problem. I guess both Rioli and Venables were part of the plan to spend more time in the middle as well as Duggo. Suspension and long-term injury are hard to plan against which makes sense why we are thin in the middle.

Sheed is a pretty decent 4th mid.

It's easy to plan against sheed as an opposition coach, take away time from him and jump on him, if you don't and give sheed time he will punish you with his kick but if you are on him his kicking under perceived pressure is shakey and at times he gets caught in two minds and gets done for holding the ball. If sheed improves this part of his game, he would be almost impossible to manage. He gets lots of footy and kicks goals already, get this part done and he is every team's nightmare.

I think the reason we were happy to pay so much for Kelly is because he improved us for the now, but also saves us in the future. He and Yeo can lead our midfield for many years after Shuey retires (with Redden also due to go sooner rather than later, as they were both 2008 draft). If we didn't draft Kelly we would have a gaping hole in our midfield in about 1 to 2 years time.

That's if Yeo's injury doesn't come back again. Could be a career killer. Fingers crossed.

Been a long work week, so just catching up. Waterman in for Shuey (essientally) seems like we’d be a bit tall overall. Is there talk of Allen missing or are people just making assumptions?

Strange call to bring Waterman in for Shuey but I'll back in the MC to know what they're doing.

Brander moves from high HF to replace Shuey in the midfield rotation and Waterman takes the HHF role

The back line looks pretty settled.
The midfield and forward lines look unbalanced.
If Waterman comes in (as the 6th tall forward) we could end up with the tallest team ever put out.
Let's stack with
Kennedy, Darling, Allen, Vardy, Waterman and Brander up forward.

Can't see Vardy being the medical sub as he'll offer no versatility, I reckon it'll be O'Neill. Maybe save Winder and Witherdon for a proper debut in the blue & gold.

It’ll have to be a quick plane to get O’Neill or Witherden over since they’re still in Perth

Brander to the inside and Waterman to the wing does sound likely based on the changes. Surprised Petch held his spot given he was fairly quiet on the weekend, but it’s obvious he’s doing a role we value internally so I’m not upset by that.

The saints don’t necessarily have the fastest midfield in the world and will try and play a contested game- so probably not the worst game to see how Brander goes.

Im not surprised Petch is still in. We are getting slower every week with our team selections. I wouldnt be shocked to see Bailey Williams in for a small forward or mid when he is ready.

Can't believe Simmo would backtrack on not debuting a player as a medical sub (if he really did say that).
Can't see what value there would be if Vardy was the medical sub. Although it would relieve Allen of the ruck duties if there's an early-ish injury.
In some ways Vardy would be a perfect medical sub in Simpson's eyes. 3/4 of the team are talls after all.
