FIRST-year Melbourne-listed midfielder James Strauss will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.

Strauss did not play for the Casey Scorpions last weekend and has since undergone reconstruction surgery on his left shoulder.

He will now undergo a three-month rehabilitation program and is expected to be available when Melbourne resumes its pre-season training in October.

It has continued a frustrating season for Struass, who played two matches for the Casey Scorpions reserves in the opening seven rounds, due to ankle and leg injuries.

He has since played two more in the reserves and three senior matches for the Scorpions, impressing in some matches, despite his interrupted start.

Strauss, who was Melbourne's third selection (No.19 overall) in last year's NAB AFL Draft, also represented Vic Metro in the 2008 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships

He was ranked equal-fourth with Nic Naitanui in the 30m-metre repeat sprints and ran 2.98 seconds in the 20-metre test at last year's NAB AFL Draft Camp.

Strauss, along with Rohan Bail, Sam Blease and Tom McNamara, is one of four senior-listed Melbourne players yet to play an AFL match.

Damn, he was really a vital cog getting to September!!

I think it's good to get the lad fixed up so he can be raring to go come Pre-Season.

I think it would've been nice to give him a game or 2, ala Grimes, so he understands the pace of senior level and can adjust his preparation accordingly.

Agree. But maybe this explains why he wasn't able to play well enough for Casey to demand selection. In fact, he's had trouble holding onto a spot in Casey firsts, despite flashes of the sort of brilliance that we know he's going to be turning on regularly in the not-too-distant future.

And well done to the club for getting this fixed in time for preseason and not letting it drag on., as ETDM said.

Im disapointed that i wont get to see him run around in the red and blue this season but if this surgery means he'll get a good pre-season in im happy enough!

we will have a super young and exciting team come the 1st nab cup game next year with all our injured youngsters ready 2 go and new recruits coming in cant wait

Disappointing to hear, was going be good to see him after being a top 20 pick last year was and is an exciting prospect, next year

With the one-touch ball sense and outstanding disposal skills that he demonstrated in the U18 carnival 2008, I thought he would turn out to be one of the very best of our youngsters. So was a bit surprised that he struggled to even hold down a place in Casey firsts. Maybe this explains it. Nothing like a couple of shoulder dislocations to make you tentative.

Though I recall one brilliant run on a TV game for Casey (can't remember which) where he gave it off and got it back a couple of times that stands as a taste of things to come.

Hope everything goes well with the surgery & rehab.; has the potential to be Gilbee or better IMO.

Yeah I agree, it also IMO gives a young player more of a feeling of being part of the team when they go into the pre-season training with at least a game or two under the belt but at least he'll be right in time for it I guess.

More bad news.

Well, I suppose it's better to get these injured players off to surgery in preparation for next season, as there is nothing left to gain this year, other than picks 1 and 2 of course.
