You’re giving examples of a club that had their off-field house in disarray though. Once they got the other stuff in order, replenishing the playing list only took 2-3 drafts to really see meaningful improvements.
Maybe so.....

But as it stands.... My team freo has spent 5 years of not making finals...

Some neutrals say freo are building a young but promising list.

But it wont mean anything if half of the best 22 is out injured.

Freo has been smashed by injuries and key trades (e.g. Hogan) not working out.

I think the list itself is solid, and Longmuir seems a pretty good coach so far.

Successfully rebuilding the list won't always mean making finals again in 2-3 years, as there's other factors at play (fixturing, injuries, luck in close games) but when I look at the Fremantle list I don't see a list that's inherently bad. Just one that has been smashed by injury to key players and with a better run should be well and truly capable of a 6 - 10 finish this season.

The backline looks good with some solid KPD depth, and good players off the HBF. The young midfield group all look like they'll be quality (I'm a big fan of Cerra & Brayshaw) and the forward-line has talent albeit a bit thin on KPF's still (though what team isn't). If Walters, Fyfe & Darcy can stay fit for the entire season that will go a long way to seeing them return to finals.

Injuries are a combination of good fitness staff and luck. Brisbane probably have some of the best strength & conditioning staff in the league right now, thus their blessed injury run, but that won't stop a Rayner ACL. There's also usually a regression to the mean, a few years of good injury runs will likely end, just as a few years of bad ones will end. Assuming the conditioning staff themselves aren't the one causing the injuries (usually a run of soft tissue injuries can be attributed to this).

I bump this thread with North Melbourne in mind. It's going to take at least 4-5 years. Is that too long?

it will be longer. 4-5 for finals, 7-11 for serious flag chance. If you aren’t ailing to be a genuine flag chance, why are you doing it.

but 7-11 years is a long time with coterie infighting

they've actively chosen to be bad, could've kept brown and higgins and kept going after FAs but chose another path. doubt it works but this isn't a system failure
I agree on Brown but surely letting Higgins go at 32-33 is neither here nor there. If anything, they should have let him go earlier for a better return.

‘so you don’t need a hard rebuild

look at port in this link. 9 years since the rebuild in 11-12. Finished higher than 5th for the first time 8 yrs later in 2020. Played finals in that time but were they really serious?
Only 3 points away from a grand final in ‘14. Guess they weren’t that serious.

Might take a bit longer to blood kids with rotations down. Seeing clubs gassed in the fourth quarters would make me want to err on the side senior players. We played Oliver Henry round one and he was cooked and it was a mistake to play him when otherwise it might have been just good experience.

All interstate clubs are in better shape normally. They are usually guaranteed 7 or so wins a season due to their home ground advantage. So to make finals is just those few extra wins
Depends who you are. If you are like Freo for most of is 25 or so year existence and gold coast suns, home ground advantage won't mean anything if you are poorly run.

Well if Freo don't make finals this season, this will be 6 years in a row of no finals.

6 years is a long time out of finals. I feel like most well-run clubs do it within 5. The other 6+ out of finals clubs being Melbourne, Saint Kilda and Carlton off the top of my head.
