What do we need from this years draft? (National Draft).

I would say that we'd be after a tough midfielder, and a strong key defender.

I think we are well covered down forward, and what we need most is a strong defender (or two).

We may have our strongish midfielders in Thewlis, Schneider, O'Keefe, Bolton (J)

Outside midfielders we have plenty in Fosdike, Davis, Kennelly, Fixter (possibly strongish), McVeigh, Malceski, Sunny

But we have no one in the strong defender role.

Thoughts?

I'd go after a ruckman. Ball won't be around for much longer, Goodes can't do it on his own, Doyle seems too injury prone, Meiklejohn probably doesn't look like cutting it (prove me wrong MJ), and LRT I believe is being groomed for a KP.

Second would be a CHB, allowing Saddington to move to a HBF, and push Kennelly into the midfield, where I believe he would be devastating.

I think we'd be better served picking up an experienced ruckman with a couple of years left in him while the younger brigade develop. Matty Allan if fit type as there wont be too many available.

Apart from that I'd prefer to trade with one of the "ruckmen rich" clubs to address this area.

Apart from that a strong KPP takes time to develop, so aain, I'd prefer looking at the best available option (Hawks talls thanks to cap constraints?).

Obviously that means either the trading of draft picks (not first round) and perhaps a youngster or two on our fringe but with potential (like say Stevens, Ablett, etc.) and quite possibly Saddo for the KPP if the right deal came along.

From what everyone's saying this years draft looks thin so trading may be the better option??

Well that depends on whether we are continuing with the rebuilding plan or are we going to start plugging the gaps again. Considering that most teams lack key defenders, I find it hard to believe we could pull some trade off in this regard. Its better to pick the best available young talent, and in 4-5 years time reap the benefits.

Initially I didn't think much of the Jade Rawlings idea but He's tall he can play in defence & alongside O'loughlin on the foward line remember we do have Schauble as a key defender and C.bolton is coming along so Jade might be agood idea and he's still got a few years left in him.

Nick Walsh

I know the swans are going to get a young irishmen [Nick Walsh]from Melbourne,i think he will start on rookie list.Nick is best mates with Tadgh.

Went back to Ireland for this year, wasn't ready to move to the other side of the world. Was contemplating his future and whether he really wanted to play AFL. No idea whether he's intending to come next year.

Ray Hall would fit perfectly into the swans side for next year. A former nsw boy, could easily be our 2nd choice ruckman or a key defender.

I've been wondering about Hall as well. Saw him play a few times last year and he looked promising. But seems to have fallen out of form (or out of grace) this year. If we could pick him up relatively cheaply he might be a good solution to our relative lack of depth in talls.

I agree bigtime. Another key defender. Saddo will never be a longterm CHB. More like wing or HBF. Also agree we we need a another ruckman to allow Goodes to play a running role.

Ray Hall would be a great target if he was homesick, and the tigers have a clean out.

I doubt we'd trade on even terms with them, but if we had the upper hand, we would take him.

Bring back Stafford.

He is a top ruckman and a dangerous forward when he is resting.

After playing at Richmond he will realise how lucky he was playing at the Swans.Although it might take a while for him to forget the Sydney "supporters" who bagged him mercilessly for whole games.

I know he looks a bit casual and looks like he isn't trying but that is his natural demeanor.

Stafford should stay

Leave him at Richmond with all the other heartless players. All Richmond players seem to have Stafford's demeanor, so best leave them there.

FWIW............

Ray Hall is not out of favour at Richmond. He has played very little footy this year (9 games) due osteitis pubis. Also had a limited preseason due to an injured quadricep. He has just successfully undergone post-season groin surgery. Having said that I believe he is being shopped around - with about 30 other Richmond players so he's not Robinson Crusoe there.

With regards to Stafford. When at Sydney he was playing under considerable duress carrying various hip and groin injuries. 6 months after arriving at Richmond and experiencing similar trouble it was discovered that he had been diagnosed wrongly and given some pretty bad advice whilst in Sydney. Since had an op and no loger troubled. This may explain his lethargic attitude towards the end of his stint with the Swans. Anyway I'm happy with him although word is Saints have made enquiries. Stafford however doesn't have to go anywhere if he doesn't want to as he signed a two year contract at end of 2002.

Out of interest who at the Swans is out of contract? Personally I'm pretty impressed with Ryan O'Keefe - love his hardness.

Can't let that slide thru to the keeper when an ex Tiger is presently your captain..........................go Stewie! Hope he has a firm grip on some silverware in a couple of weeks.

Good luck!

my bro reckons that sydney will trade saddington for a key position backmen..

he reckons saddo to doggs and nbrown to syd..

if this goes down for sure davis would take up a back position.. or even on the ball.. that was what roos said when davis first started playing for the swans..

i truely honestly hope they get rid of
ben mathews...
TOTAL SHI*HOUSE

cant kick and has no ballz ... stuey is gettin old we should get a hard in and under player to help out jude and kirky...

Personally I would like Ryan to stay a swan for years to come I don't want Stafford although I didn't think it was a great idea to trade him in the first place. But we do need a young established ruckman to help out Goodsey. I reckon trade MeikleJohn and maybe Buchanen to get a Matthew Allen type player not him personally he's to old now at 28.How about Dean Brogan from Port Power. Speaking of Port it would be great to get Nick Stevens but he wants to return to Melbourne though we could try. Essendon are going to be trying hard for ruckmen though.
I reckon as soon as LRT moves in at CHB we can play Saddo on a flank pushing Tadgh to the centre which would help replace Cressa though I think it will be a while before the hiphen moves in ant CHB, but we do have Rowan Warfe and Brad Seymour who can play up back and Seymour in the forward line alongside Micky and Barry which would allow Nick Davis to push into the centre as well or possibly have Ryan O'Keefe or even The Pocket Rocket onball.

Brown isnt a KPP, and I would think the Dogs would want more than Saddo for him.

I too have heard this, as he is likely to be delisted by Melbourne. Has OP and never showed that much at any level higher than school footy (which he played for his entire first year on our rookie list). He has been on the rookie list 2 or 3 years now and was never going to get an upgrade to our senior list.
