Interesting the conversation on local players being overpaid. Here's another issue with local football and it's cost.
It cost a junior player approximately $28 each week to take the field, this does not include kit, boots or mouth guard.
Now $6-$7 goes to umpires (fair enough) then another percentage to insurance and then league administration.
It works out to roughly $600 a game perside, $1200 if you add both teams fees together for a 48 minute game of football.
Insurance is not that much per game, it's not that hard to administer, the teams are coached for free by volunteers, so the league and clubs must be making something there.
Yes there is club expenses for juniors, but it's certainly not in the vicinity of $100 a week.
No wonder families walk away from the game and the lesser divisions suffer by never having access those players that weren't guns down the track.
The league and clubs are more focused on the money rather than player retention due to how things have evolved over time.
Hopefully some of this is undone.

Interesting to get a better understanding of the numbers you have used.
It costs a club approx 600 to field a side for the year in juniors and double that for senior sides. In all about 12-15k before a ball is bounced if a club has 14-15 jnr teams and a full complement of seniors.
Some good clubs invest money backinto the club.

But what about the money it cost clubs.
Eg council rates, water, electricity. Not to mention footballs, and training equipment. Those things aren’t free and add up.
electricity would Be a massive cost when you think about having ground lights on 3 hrs a night 5 days a week.

Lights are LED and don't cost anywhere near what they used to (2hours x 3-4 nights), juniors don't use hardly any water as they don't shower, pretty sure clubs don't pay council rates as they own it.
Sporting clubs are looked after by the councils as it's community based sport (not for profit) to a point where I don't think they pay for lights either.

Clubs in certain councils have to pay for ground and club rooms. Plus they have to pay for utilities. i can can say it’s more than 2 hours a night.
most clubs it’s 5pm - 9pm most nights. regardless of if they are LED or not they still cost a lot of money. 20 hrs a week for 4-5 months. It adds up.

You have no idea

And what exactly do I have no idea about?
He's pointing out that clubs do not own the grounds or buildings and so do pay rent to the Council. Clubs also pay all utility bills and not all clubs have new LED lighting. Lights are on for at least 20hrs per week. I did a rough estimate of costs for a normal year on the EDFL Premier Division 2020 forum. This will not apply to all clubs or season 2020.

Of that 20 hours how much is attributable to junior football when junior sessions are completed by 6:00 PM with the exception of the occasional u18's team.
As for the lights, maybe clubs need to upgrade to reduce costs.
How much exactly do clubs pay? Could it be nothing more than a token gesture, or clubŕoom rates.
Utilities, there's not much as far as cost goes there.
Face the facts, bigger clubs use juniors to pay Bill's and players when the overheads of juniors is minimal.

I have no idea what it costs football clubs for grounds from the council but local cricket clubs with a few teams in Moreland council aren't getting much if any change out of 10k. The council are not giving mates rates on grounds I can tell you that.

Juniors train three nights per week from 5 to 8:30 (and for bigger clubs this is on multiple grounds), so at least 50% of the lighting time. The Clubs do not own the lights, these are owned by the council and any upgrades are within council funding. Council rates are around $5,000 pa. I understand all EDFL councils have told footy clubs there would be no charge this year. Certainly, footy clubs might not even get access to the rooms at all in 2020.

Marby fined by the EDFL after the council called the league to say they were breaking council rules. They were found to be using another ground to host a training session. Against councils policies.

Good - Stupid by the coach to think he could get away with using another ground to have a training run... Again another example of a Junior coach over stepping the mark...

Juniors should have been 9 Rounds with 2 weeks of finals, 1 v 4 and 2 v 3 with both winners in to the GF. 10 team grades, play everyone once.

And no need to play and extra game for those that don't make finals.

Pretty poor the league can cancel all senior to thirds and womens footy yet juniors can continue in a region that is hot with Covid-19?
Surely it's about income and not community safety when this goes on.

I am over the indecisive decisions by the edfl. How can they think it’s ok to can seniors for health yet say it’s ok for juniors to go ahead? Surely the figures since schools have gone back would show kids are just as much carriers and transferees as adults?

Having 5 junior teams this year - not including u18:5, edfl costs would be $8,500. We also have to pay for our water, gas, electricity and internet. That doesn’t include anything paid to council, equipment, drink bottles, etc

Ok, even with the cost outlined the total fees of one (and a bit) teams for the season covers that. Is it fair that so much is taken in these fees that goes towards paying senior players?
Clubs should not use junior football budgets to pay players, cover costs absolutely, but not more. That's why there should be a cap on junior fees so clubs can't profit from juniors and the league genuinely evens out.
Clubs like Keilor also make it compulsory for volunteer parents perform voluntary duties like canteen or little Johnny can't play. This creates more revenue for the club but you never see a senior player in the canteen performing shifts!

The Andrews Government has announced that Metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shore is to enter ‘stage 3’ lockdown from 11:59pm tomorrow night until Wednesday, 19th August 2020.
