A better effort than I expected four days after the slog. Our first half was very promising but the loss had a certain air of inevitability about it. Esava was shocking in the second half but his first half was good and patience is required with the big blokes. Are we in a position to punt him at this stage? He's a player with enormous upside even though his second half was very costly for us. We couldn't seem to string two possessions together in that second half. Even when we won a clearance it was blasted out and turned over. The patience we had in the first half evaporated and as a result so did the goals.

For everything that went wrong in the second half we only needed Rohan or Esava to clunk those shots or for us to get that free kick when Constable got cleaned up. I believe the Eagle got reported? How do you not get a free for that? Plenty of positives and lets get the job done against the Roos next week.

Just thought I'd get this out there as it's been bugging me a while:

We can all agree that we don't rate Parfitt, yes?

And even those of you who do, acknowledge that he won't ever be the player to carry a midfield yes?

He's a good third string midfielder in a midfield rotation.

So why are so many of you ripping into him? He's performing exactly how he should. If he's only ever going to be a 3rd or even 4th string midfielder, why are so many of you surprised that (Only in his 4th season mind you) he's an inconsistent, often ineffective player.

He's exactly what we expected him to be!!!!

If we thought he could be the midfield leader we need in the coming years we wouldn't still be chasing a Danger/Selwood replacement. You know why we are chasing that replacement? Because there isn't one currently in an ideal age bracket on our list.

Just my 2 cents

Cheers

I agree that that's exactly what I expected him to be. Yet the way this board has talked about him sometimes you'd think he has potential to waltz into our 2007 side. He's just another waste of a reasonably high pick if you ask me though. I look forward to his breakout game in 2028 though.

The issue came up again. The pressure goes up we crumble. Finals like intensity and the usual suspects can't handle it. Henry, parfitt, Ratagolea, Miers don't like the heat and it shows.

Duncan, Taylor, Henderson, menengola all brave and committed.

Absolutely right.

Esava really needs to lift his disposals. He's not undroppable, but for some reason he's treated as such.

Jenkins has been injured and we need esava to 2nd ruck that's why. When Jenkins or one of the rucks is fit he might get a spell.

You forgot Blicavs and Rohan.

I think most of us would've been expecting a fairly bad loss, so we did extremely well for a fair part of this game.

But we are not a composed team when it gets tight. The end of the Carlton game showed that. As did this game. So many stupid mistakes.

Kolo is an ongoing liability. We need to find another option. He provides no run out of defence. Shits himself still under pressure.

Yeh' I had hopes of seeing Kolo make it but he's such a woeful user of the footy. Is not a solid mark either.

By comparison, Stewart is brilliant. Is as good as it gets in every aspect of his game.
Wins the footy like Scarlett did in his heyday and is as assured defensively as any of the best defenders in the competition right now. You always feel comfortable when he gets the ball.

Who says Parfitt is carrying the midfield? There are some other blokes named Dangerfield, Duncan, Menegola, Selwood and Guthrie who are all above him in the pecking order.

Because what you expect from 3rd string midfielders is stuff like say Constable.
Someone who doesn't get huge minutes, doesn't get huge possessions but impacts games when given the chance.
Parfiit GETS minutes, doesn't get possessions and seems to think every time he gets the ball he has 30 minutes to think about it and use it, he gets caught far too often and constantly goes the wrong decision, or no decision.
It's like a bench player in the NBA, if ur 6/7/8th player is a net negative to the team when they are on the court, you don't play them anymore.
Parfitt as a 3rd string midfielder is a net negative to us, except his tackling. Ball in hand he's absolutely bottom 4 on the ground consistently.

Spot on mate. Had we played like we did tonight against any other team, or even against West Coast without the crowd, we'd win.

Positive night tonight.

Agreed. My only gripe is ladder wise we needed that win and we were so close but play that way and we will win our next 3 and be right in the hunt. We still have some structural issues (e.g. ruck) but in a year like this we are capable of winning it.

Didn’t expect to win so not too disappointed overall.

I like Close. He can stay.

Sav is not a no.1 ruck and played like it. Still a future as a forward and 2nd ruck.

Fog and Rohan needed to do more

The only way this team gets to a grand final and wins is if we learn to handle pressure. It has been our problem for way way too long. The issue I have is if its a personal problem the only way to fix it is to roll over the team and move players on who can't handle it. The other solution is a psychologist that somehow gets rid of all the demons in the players heads that causes them to crumble when things get tough. It was clear as day that when the pressure turned up West Coast rose and made good decisions - we were the opposite. It's annoying because we have the ability to compete with every team but fall short in the thing that matters most when things gets tough.

No we didn’t. We had Blicavs and Ratagolea. When it suits people Blicavs is absolutely called a ruckman on here. Problem was Natanui slaughtered both of them in the second half.
Come on mate. You've been around long enough.
Surely you giggled at some of stuff Nic Nat did.

I looked a replays trying to fault a cat player. Nup, not there. He's just too good.

He's the Jordan of footy. Just doesn't play enough due to injury.

Does anybody seriously consider Blicavs a ruckman?

I doubt anyone has considered Blicavs a ruck since the third man up rule. He is a utility who can play ruck if in dire need. And we were in dire need, so he and Ratagolea pinch hit. They did better than expected in that role given their opponent.
