So he is not really a "Ballarat Boy"
No my mistake. He's a country kid from Leeton. Went to school in Ballarat for two years and played football for the rebels as a result.

It's not to say we still aren't interested in Smith or him in us.

Hopper is a Ballarat boy so it makes a little sense.
Makes so much sense that he was an academy prospect, Ballarat is a rugby heartland.

Yes. There were some murmurs that the school was giving scholarships to identified interstate talent to boost its football stocks which seems the way they are prepared to go. Whatever, hope finds his way to Geelong
I made the trip to St Pats Ballarat a couple of times to play when I was at Joe's Geelong in the 60s they gave us a flogging both times,I never saw so many 6ft 70kg kids in my life there must have been something in the milk up there.

Pretty much. Hooper would be considered a great get and GWS would want a lot..more than we will have. At least Smith might be a FA if they changed the rules..but Hooper , he will cost a R1 and probably an early one.
He'd cost more than a first rounder. I dint think they'd let him go. They'd more likely to let one of the older mids go and bank the cash and picks. Someone is bound to attract a Treloar level offer and it can't hurt to smooth out that age profile.

It all balances out with opportunity. No matter there pedigree or potential , players want to play and a Hooper would be a must pick in most sides so .... as far as letting him go... its all starts with him ..if he wants out , and is uncontracted then they will deal. They have shown a willingness to be pragmatic with a view to the long term. If however he gets a solid bank of games this year , someone else will have to miss out ... perhaps they will be the trade you are theorising .
As far as him being worth more than a R1... again.. Id say thats dependant on what his 2017 season presents. Originally a P7 , at the end of a second year he would seem to line up with what Caddy cost.

At his age , it would not just be about cuurent needs. I agree we have greater needs than trading in a mid.
I know it's not just about current needs. We'll see how he goes this year but so far it looks as we'd be every chance to get a mid as good with a pick in the late teens/early 20's.

Baring injury he'll probably play 18+ games next year. If it wasn't for a back injury which cost him a month of football after he debuted he would have probably played more then the 10 he did. I don't think the comparison with Caddy is apt, Caddy wanted out the year before we even got him to the club and had already lost a year of football due to a broken leg.

One can pick what one wants to use for comparative data Caddy P7 and moved after 2 years and playing 22 games in year2

As far as I can tell (I will have missed some names) these are the key forwards out of contract in 2017 at each club (bolded are free agents italics denotes rookie listed player)

Levi Casboult
Liam Jones
Harry McKay

Collingwood
Jesse White
Mitch McCarthy

Essendon
Mitch Brown
Joe Daniher

St Kilda

Nick Riewoldt (won't leave)

Sydney

Stewart Crameri

West Coast Eagles
Jack Darling
Tom Lamb
Fraser McInness
Drew Petrie

When you filter out guys like Riewoldt and Daniher who won't leave there is not heaps there. The McKay twins are both good players if you want a 'young kid with lots of potential but isn't certain to make it' although in our situation a more mature KPF would be better. Reid is a good player but made of tissue paper, he is also just ending a huge $ 5 year deal at Sydney so he would want to be expecting a lot less $ from a new club to be considered. Darling is a good player if you can iron out some kinks and he is at least durable, not that I expect he would leave Perth anyway. Crameri is a decent player but not really the CHF type we are after and Redpath is an honest battler. Weideman or Schache would be the best 2 of that list but both would cost more in $ and picks than I think we can manage and I doubt they leave their clubs anyway. Our best chance of trading in a top end KPF went when 2MP re-signed a few weeks ago. For now we probably have to go with what we have and try and make it work.

Three of the guys you mention are rated here - http://www.footyprophet.com/the-top-ten-afl-clubs-by-prospects-and-potential/

Seventh ranked prospect (Josh Schache)
Harry McKay (Depth)
22nd prospect (Sam Weideman)

Edit - Just seen Harrison Himmelberg comes out of contract next season (2017), Giants have been playing him in defence but he caught my eye in the fwd line against his own age (u18's).

School really rated him not just as a skilled player but also as a genuine leader

Mackie and Lonergan retiring gives us some much needed cap space, but trade currency limited.

On top of the two retirements, imagine they'll look to offload a couple of the late pick long shots such as Buzza and Hayball, and this year is prob last chance saloon for Cowan and/or Cunico - assume one of these will go. As such, only 5 or so departures at the end of this year, compared to about 10 or so in the past couple of years. Thinking that if Motlop walks as a FA, then the offer should justify a 1st round pick back to us (which we should actually use), otherwise he stays and takes a pay cut.

To fill those spots, we have capacity/currency for one quality trade, and the rest picked up through the draft. For argument's sake, assume Devon Smith as the trade, as there is nothing really gettable as a true CHF that we could afford, which would have otherwise been the highest structural priority. Club shouldn't be keen to trade few future picks as the father-son names start coming through next year, eg. Brownless, Hocking and co.

That would move our best 22 going into 2018 as:

B: Bews Kolodjashnij Taylor
HB: Thurlow Henderson Tuohy
C: Duncan SSelwood Guthrie
HF: Cockatoo Stanley DSmith
F: Motlop Hawkins Menzel
Foll: ZSmith Dangerfield JSelwood
Int: Blicavs Lang Menegola McCarthy
Depth: Gregson Stewart Black Ruggles Murdoch Horlin-Smith

That list can then play together for some time given the age profile, but the challenge will then come to find our next JSelwood, Taylor and Hawkins.....

St Pats has long given scholarships to gun junior footballers from no where near Ballarat :D

Jake Kolo to the G.C Suns. I'd bet money on it.
Bloody scares me...

and I hope the hell not..... Hell no...

But there would be our Rd1 back to us if it went down that way...

Go Catters

I doubt we would get a Pick. To trade him , it would have to be someone like Wright.. A rare commodity that gain would impose pain. Otherwize why would we do it.

I think we would need to include our first rounder with that to get it done (maybe get some steak knives in return). And we're not allowed to do that, right?

Not right now, but wait 5 minutes and the AFL will probably change their mind on it. I'm expecting the next trade period to feature a minimum of one rules backflip, why not that one?

A lot of promising talent leaving this club in recent times.
I would bet my money on Motlop leaving at seasons end too.

Wouldn't surprise me if Kolodjashnij left. He's now an established starter so you would hope we would get compensated accordingly.
