Do you think Gibbs will be an Adelaide player by the end of this trade period?

Yep, just Vader rewriting history to suit his agenda.....nothing new there.
Not really!. Adelaide could have offered more than GC if they wanted. It may be because the club didn't think he was worth that much. So they refused to pay his price. So, who rejected who?

Disagree, it should always be a balancing act between loading up now and ensuring our future is also bright. For instance, a 1st + 2nd for Gibbs would've been a good compromise between the two - it would've strengthened us this year whilst also allowing us to continue building our list. Two first rounders for Gibbs would've swung the pendulum too far to one side, meaning our future would be dented.

That balancing act is what has ensured we never actually win anything

There are also other alternatives... such as Adelaide balking at his contractual demands, or expectations of how/where he wanted to be used on the field.

His final decision was Gold Coast.. but who rejected who is anybody's guess. All reports I remember reading at the time had Adelaide cooling on him immediately after his interview & physical. Whether that was because he was more interested in GC, or Adelaide didn't like what they saw, is entirely unknown.

Other alternatives?

You claimed it was a fact yesterday you clown

Problem is/was Jacobs and Gibbs cost a salary and nothing more. If you pay 2 first rounders we as supporters would rightly demand instant success. Gibbs would make us a better team, there shouldn't be any doubting that but IMO he wouldn't win us a flag.

So bearing that in mind, giving away 2 1sts for a guy who wouldn't push us above the 2 Sydney teams, the Dogs and possibly even Geelong..... not worth it.
So what's the alternative? Please don't say Fyffe or Martin. They are as realistic as SOS giving us Gibbs for nothing.

The alternative is with one more year's football under the bridge Bryce is still not worth 2 1sts at the stage of his career he will be in 2018. A 1st with the possibility of a later pick maybe, maybe not.

It's a good question, but realistically Gibbs isn't going to get us a flag so do you want to spend up to move a bit further up the ladder or keep what we have and either stay put or fall back ??

"first" is meaningless

He was absolutely worth 2 shitty "firsts"

2016 first and 2017 first would have been pick 15 last year, and on making the grand final, we're talking something like pick 20-22 in 2017. He was worth that no question.

How can you prejudge how effective a player will become?
No one knows what might happen. We can all speculate and say he will or he wont but this is just conjecture. What I do know is if we do nothing.... nothing will happen!

There is no such thing as shitty 1st rounder, particularly how we use them.

Gibbs isn't worth both picks #17 & #18, unless you are clueless about a players trade worth.

If picks 16-17 are not worth much, think on how much picks 38-39 would be. Because that would have been what we would have been left with. Would that have been enough to get Edwards with? And, if that is what it would have taken, what picks would our next 2 picks be at? But, I guess we could promote 2 rookies instead.

After losing 2 firsts and 2 seconds and seeing out list filled with honest toilers rather than stars I'd be extremely reluctant to then give up another 2 firsts for another honest toiler.

Feels like we only try to be better off than port.

2014 was awful with the port fap fest in full swing. First year at AO, and a resurgent port. A good portion of the state (and media) went full Janus.

No doubt the admin felt it too.

We had all this change at years end. Roo comes in, sack the coach, new CEO. Change was coming.

Then the port revival died, while we did ok. Now there's a feeling of same old same old.

What do you mean you can't judge ?? You can judge Bryce on what his career has been so far, and that is nowhere near enough to demand 2 first rounders nor is it enough to play in a GF.

Players don't become magically better after 10 years in the system, they just don't.

I'm pretty happy with the talent weve brought in over the past 18 months:

Weitering
McKay
C Curnow
Cuningham
Silvagni
Plowman
Marchbank
Pickett
Petrovski Seaton
Fisher
Polson
Macreadie
Kerr

Alongside Cripps and Docherty thats the nucleus for a pretty good side when he are back competing for finals again in 3-4 years.

We still have a long way to go of course.

No they didnt, should we just not do any deals and remain competitive for another 19 years, gee that will be fun

How many quality players have we actually attracted, Gibbs at his rating was far greater rated than Betts,Jacobs, JJ, Thommo, Menzel, Hampton when we got them, in fact any player that we have attracted in the last 20 years

The biggest name we have been able to attract in 20 years and whilst we are in a premiership opportunity but may just miss out because our midfiled isnt up to standard, and we find a midfield player who is quality wants to come here. Am I the only one that thinks we had been kissed on the D. If we pay overs it may or may not have got us a premiership, but playing it conservative definetly want get a flag. take the punt, roll the dice

Hate being just competitive but a lot on here love it

The New England Patriots are the most successful NFL team of the last 15 years and perhaps of all time. They cherry pick players from other teams who fit their system and get them on the cheap. At no time have they ever paid a kings ransom for any players and have always picked at the end of the round of the draft due to their constant success. This model of doing things has seen them win 5 Superbowls in recent times. They never sell the future for one player. Never. Buy low, sell high. They always win at trading because they stick to this principle. The Baltimore Ravens, another perennially successful franchise follow this same model. It's success has been well proven.

So it can be done but we're not good to do it?

Mind you the patriots might not look so clever if they hadn't lucked onto Brady ;)

Then maybe AFL is such a unique game that it works different as it does in soccer also, looking at teams like Man U , Real Madrid and the like they just buy the best players or the NBA where the best teams have the best players

Or maybe NFL is the odd one out

Remember how many years we have gone without a flag for so whatever system we are working on it's not working
