I think thre problem with this deal was that (and someone correct me on the actual numbers here) Bowes still had two-years to run on his contract that was backloaded, the total salary amount was really high.
After acquiring Bowes, the Cats were then able to restructure the deal and pay him the same money but over four-years, not two so they did not have to suffer any pain or inconvenience.
Do you really think Jack Bowes would agree to play for free for 2 years? There were plenty of clubs willing to pay out his contract to get the draft pick.
Geelong were the only one running to add 2 years on solid money. He was owed something like $1.8m over 2 and Geelong's paying him $2.6m over 4.
