Is Todd Marshall a once in a generation key forward?

Has an amazing kick.

Unfortunately is incredibly mentally weak. Had an amazing stint of goal kicking last year where it looked like it had clicked. By the end of that year he started declining in his set shots and this year his kicking has continued its decline.

It's not technical, it's not skill, it's mental.

Good coaches build their players up. Hinkley brings them down.

Tonight he kicks the boundary line wrong foot snap where there is no pressure, but misses several other easily kickable goals.

Maybe his role is a third forward - just hasn't got the build and mental approach to be key position. Plus his head knocks havent helped.

Should have had 5 goals to his name and we'd be talking about how he played a solid game.

"Should have" means zero.
He failed when we needed some leadership from someone who should be in his absolute prime, reality his he has always been soft and has hit his peak as a footballer. He will never be the player many hoped he would have been.

The 2016 draft was widely considered a good draft but very weak for key forwards, with only three worth dick... Todd Marshall, Josh Battle and Pat Kerr.

Josh Battle is now a defender and Pat Kerr is long gone from the AFL. Todd seems to be tracking alright from that perspective as a key forward.

Except Nick Larkey was drafted after those three at pick 73 and is a genuine star.

Ken. Cannot. Develop. Key. Forwards.

It has to be the gameplan. I can't think of any other reason that our key forwards are so inconsistent and never seem to absolutely dominate. Our best key forwards since Ken has been here have been traded in. So at least they had a taste of somewhere else.

I hope Todd fixes the mental side, but I can't see him being more than a handy second forward, when he was the highest rated key forward of his draft.

And we picked him ahead of diehard Port fan Tim English. Not that we need a ruck or anything.

Tim English? As in WA born, South Fremantle product Tim English?

I understand Todd is carrying a hip injury but the only two ways to explain some of those misses tonight are if his right leg/hip is in excruciating pain, or he couldn't feel it at all due to the painkiller he was injected with. They were shocking. I don't know how much of it was mental and how much was physical but it was deflating to watch.

Yep, grew up supporting Port.

I am hoping that Mitch Georgiades can overcome his kicking yips and take some heat off Todd up forward. I agree that Todd is not really built as a KPF but at 198cm he does have height on his side. It is a pity Todd can put on 10kg of muscle because at 198cm and 102 kg he might be a completely different player.

Todd Marshall is a confidence player. He would be a star under Jack Cahill. Not so much under Ken 'aw gee finals are a bit scary I'm really nervous' Hinkley.

That scary comment - was he trying to be all genuine or something? Or does he just spread the fear… doesn’t seem like an appropriate thing to say does it, not in a competitive sport.

Ken doesn't put in forethought for this kind of stuff.

No. The second coming of John Butcher...maybe:think:

Put him on the trade table
I wanted him traded a couple of years ago and especially after that West Coast final when McGovern ran off him all day and was best on ground.
He did improve last year and his kicking was pretty good, as it was at the beginning of this year.
I believe he’s injured right now and is playing as there isn’t any other options with our lack of tall forwards.
Problem with Todd he’s just not hard enough at it and that’s a worry long term.

He's clearly carrying something, those misses were almost complete missed kicks of the boot. If he was just missing then I would say its mental but it looks structural ie hip / groin. Is a generational key forward no, but the premise was always silly, however in a structured forward line of Lord, Georgiardis and Finalyson hes a pretty handy cog.

Likely a combination of physical/injury and mental. You don't lose your action overnight. Our coaching panel has never been able to address kicking problems, time for them to suck it up and get a specialist in for our forwards. I'm sure Daddy will know better though.
